Shotguns are scary Id much rather be shot 2-3 times with a rifle than with a shotgun... When hit with a shotgun best case scenario for you you will still lose a limb or a massive chunk of yourself. Worst case scenario you get cut in half...

Getting hit by a rifle is 100% guaranteed to fuck up one of your organs and you best hope to fuck it's not vital, a shotgun was just undecided so it just chose to fuck up every single one of them at the same time.

Fun fact: the Winchester lever action most used in WW1 and 2 was the Model 1895. At the time is had calibers in a wide range from .30-40 Krag to .405 Win. It was most commonly chambered in .30-06 and .30-40 Krag (the "replacement" for .45-70). The .30-40 delivered about 3000J of force compared to the 500J from 9x19 Parabellum (from the MP 40). While yes, obviously one shot from an MP 40 can easily kill you in real life, this explains why most video games buff the damage of semiautomatic rifles (mostly sniper "long gun" types). It also helps to balance the gameplay out so people aren't forced to use automatic weapons if they don't want to and the players with then aren't completely overpowered

Edit: Regarding M1 Garand recoil: if you fire it enough times in one session, it can make your shoulder sore. Back then, especially in the army, doubly especially if you were in a firefight, you just sucked it up.
