You could probably improve the torque characteristics by changing the synchronization of the two engines. Setting the cranks with both engines at top dead center (like an eight cylinder flat plane crank) would improve the torque at low revs. Setting them so the top dead centers are 90 degrees apart would make it better at high revs.

I had a Lada , three years the only thing broke was a stuck themostat , but got home , 200 milles , by going full blast on the heater . It was hard to get through air care because of the carb , the Lada service department would tune the engine to pass air care, then adjust to run better after it passed , they would even run it through for me , no charge . Best thing was being able to adjust the headlights while you were driving by a little knob on the dash .

A lot of the problem is that weld where the engines are connected together will never be perfectly straight/balanced. If the engines were not allowed some flex they would probably end up tearing eachother apart. need to get the engines fireing cylinder 1 engine 2 then 5 deg latter fire cylinder 1 engine 1 that will help with you touque problem I think give it a try or you could set the engines at a 180 deg off set so you would have a cylinder making power every 90 deg of crank rotation be good to try both ways

The inline 8 two block inline looks killer. I would try yo improve the coupling, probably using a flex joint of installing a clutch to both engine can equalice ?. Not a mechanic. I recall an old Amerinca bus that used twin engines but all the power transfer was hidrahulic, so no issues with the coupling.
Fabricating plastic pistons (will they work?)
