Mike Brewer saluting the Capri was brilliant. My best friend does it when he sees one pass as it was his first car. Not many about now. Especially not ones painted white with a paint brush and house paint. The boot had 2 large wooden speaker cabinets from his house in it. The laughs we had in that are now utterly priceless memories.

I had a 73 2.6 Capri in Canada. Each head had only 2 exhaust ports. The 2.8 heads had 3, but had other problems. So being naïve put a junk yard head on a milling machine and milled out until the ports were separate. Then mounted aluminum blocks ala 351 Ford V8 motors for 3 ports. I used 2.8 headers. The heads were ported and I used a Offenhauser 4 barrel manifold with a 390 cfm Holley. With a cam change only that motor really perked up. It would pull to 8500 rpm and mid range torque was amazing. Beat my fair share of V8's. Oh those were fun days inventing stuff and experimenting. Now my 434 Chev. small block has CNC ported everything. Runs very good but.........well it not the same when you just order it!

Oh & the siamese port comment is the wrong way around, US spec Cologne V6 had individual ports per cylinder (which are clearly visible on the engine you are working on) & the euro ones had siamese ports on two cylinders per bank for engines of the same era. The later euro cologne was a different engine again though without the siamese exhaust ports but with a chain driven cam...... The uk Essex V6 always had an exhaust port per cylinder. The Essex V6 also used a gear driven cam but that & the angle of the V is about where the similarity ends.

That's got to a European V6 cologne engine, surely??
@SB-vb8ch
@SB-vb8ch 2 жыл бұрын
Nope, look around 3:13 & you'll see the single front port & the double sized ovoid port for the middle & rear cylinder. Euro engines had the same sized ports for the single cylinder & the siamesed cylinders - in fact they use two identical gaskets on each head. There are another couple of versions, the US spec 3 port heads as used on Mustangs & no doubt other US market Ford cars of the era & the later Euro 2.4/2.9 engines which had individual exhaust ports per cylinder but are actually very different (chain driven cam etc).
@cologne2792
@cologne2792 5 жыл бұрын
The Siamesed exhaust ports were also a design on the UK Cologne engine. The Essex 3.0 had separate exhaust ports as did the later 2.9 Cologne. Nice engines though.
@05gtdriver
@05gtdriver 5 жыл бұрын
Actually the North American 2.8L Cologne V-6 was a "6 port" head, individual intake & exhaust ports. Ant is full of it, and so is Mike when he refers to changing the "bonnet" on his Capris when he was younger to get the "bonnet bulge hood", stating how this Mark 2 has the "bonnet bulge" hood. The Mark 1 Capris had the flat or bulge hood(depending on year and/or engine size), all Mark 2s as well as Mark 3s all have the raised bulge on the hood(bonnet), so Mike is being redundant. Also, at the end of this episode, Mike states how this is the 1st Capri done on WDs, which is BS because in season one, Edd tackles a Mark 3 1.6 Laser...... Goes to show, these TV shows and production companies really don't cater to the knowledgeable enthusiast, just the average viewer.

Colognes of the same era in euro were siamese & the USA ones were port per cylinder. The 2.4/2.9 obviously is still a cologne but very different in detail to the older style of engines (chain driven cam being the obvious difference). There are quite a few flavours of colognes, the very early german motors were quite different (v4 & v6), the ones we had in the uk & then the early & later types which existed in thd USA. The final incarnation was OHC as used in the explorers & 3rd gen Disco. The whole WD thing is quite poor from a research perspective, lots of errors etc. Not as bad as anything with Jimmy 'I have no clue' Deville in tho.....
@wyrazowfkp
@wyrazowfkp 5 жыл бұрын
@Rick Hough Yes. All the old european cologne V6 - with carb or with mechanical injection had siamese ports (only 2 per head) -- 1.8 V6 2.0 V6 2.3 V6 2.6V6 and the 2.8 V6 (* only one did not : the Granada MK1 2.8i on some early k-jet different than in Capri from 81 which had different heads - more like US style). The 2.9 EFi was never used in the Capri from factory. The essex 3.0 had normal 3 port heads.

Could spot straight away that the engine had been worked on. Loads of orange sealant sticking out from the sump and rocker cover joints. With the sump off, I would have taken the oil pickup pipe off and cleaned the strainer and made sure that no old bits of gasket sealant there blocking it or the pump. Additionally, I would have run a wire twist brush down all of the head to sump oil ways. If they are blocked, the sump can end up dry and the oil all stays in the rocker covers, causing the engine to overheat or seize.

Those old nylon teeth timing gears would strip on Ford V6 engines, which has exactly the same effect as a timing belt breaking. However, it was no big deal as they weren't interference engines, like a lot of others of that period. That 2.8 was the Cologne V6, but there was also the Ford Essex 3L V6, which was a different engine and that also used the same fibre gear wheel system. Originally UK Capris were fitted with the Essex 3L V6, but that was later supplanted by the Cologne V6 2.8L with fuel injection. Only the Cologne unit had siamesed ports. Reputedly the Essex unit was good for 180 bhp with EFI which was apparently tried in South Africa.

I always think this cologne engine was originally used on the Ford Mustang I really don't think is a germany design. Or maybe I'm wrong and there's no 2.8 cologne just 3.0

Ant is excellent in his own right. Unfair to compare him with Edd. They overdo the silly acting sketches though. Be nice to see Edd and Ant in a show without Mike.

What people forget is that there are a bunch of advisers who instruct these so called mechanics how to do the job. No one mechanic has that much know how about so many different cars. Certainly not at that age and especially if you haven’t been in the trade all your life

Watched the full version and either Mike has an awful memory or is so used to lying he does without thinking. At the end he says this is the first Capri on Wheeler Dealers. They did one in the first series or has he disowned the Edd years?

3:46 he says catastrophic damage but I’m 99% sure this engine is not interference? So all that would happen is it would stop running
@TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. If the nylon wheel stripped it didn't do any damage. My stepfather had a Ford Granada with a V6 and it did no damage when the teeth stripped and it was a reasonably easy fix. It was quite common in engines of that era to have non-interference engines.

Oldskool mechanics don’t wear gloves, I think Ant is a lot better, I found with Edds new show with the mk1 golf. He disappears when the jobs to tough! And leave the guy he’s supposed to be helping, fix the car with his friends. Then comes back with wheels powered coated. I rate Ant 100% and Edd 50%

Looks like he has perfectly shaved hands that don't belong to a mechanic let alone a bare hands mechanic. All that used oil, parts washer and sealants have made his hands bald or he purposely go's to a salon and gets a hand wax. Either way I would not recommend it.
