About the noise: Test drove EQC; E-tronic (SUV), XC-60 T6 and this Mazda. E-tron by far the most expensive/quiet with air suspensions might I add. EQC rubbish (plastic creeking, brakes are non-existent especially when applying hard), XC-60 very nice and spacious with good seats. But the Mazda's whine when you're flooring it was the decision maker to me. It's a superb sound and puts a smile on your face. In regular driving on a highway the noise isn't too much to irritate you, but when driving sporty in the sport-mode it makes you smile. That I didn't get in any of the others.

My last car was the CX5, and I loved it. Bought the CX60 Homura in red, 2 weeks ago, and I am very pleased with it. My first PHEV vehicle. These days my journeys are fairly local, running mainly on electric. In the 2 weeks of owning it I have used very little petrol. I have solar panels fitted on my house, so cheap charging as long as the sun is shining. I have watched a lot of CX60 reviews on YT, and unless I missed it, none of the reviews mention that when the electric power runs out, and the engine takes over, there is a button that can be pressed that charges the battery. In just a few miles running on petrol there is enough charge for around 10 miles of travel. Trouble with some reviews is that they must drive the very best of vehicles that are top of the range. I don't, so find the CX60 perfect for my needs. Saw one dealer selling the exact same car as mine for £7,000 more than I paid! My one gripe is the document holder in the sun visor, it is now a puny clip. On the CX5 it was a pocket. Ended up with paperwork in my lap after going over a speed bump.

Hello William, As someone that has actually bought a CX60, I was wondering if you could help with a question. If I undertake a long journey (i.e 200 miles) that involves a mix of normal roads and motorway, does the CX60 petrol engine work in harmony with the electric engine as a true hybrid? In hybrid mode with both the petrol engine and electric motor working in unison, how long is it before the battery runs out and the engine has to be used to charge the battery?
@101CBR600RR
@101CBR600RR Жыл бұрын
@@jonnymathews I don't own a CX60 but I think as long as you are not on EV mode it works just as a standard hybrid - regenerating energy with braking when required. There is an option to change the regeneration of energy as well. The car is always using the battery - and outside of EV mode it always has the combustion engine kick in when required (more often than not depending on the drive mode).

CX-60 comes in perfect for people that need to tow heavy, but still have a cheap commute. Other PHEVs that can tow the same amount are 40-60% more expensive (x5, xc90, GLE, Cayenne, Defender, Explorer 3.0, Q7 etc.) If you can get to and from work within the ~60km of electric range, and you need a large car to tow around your horses (for example) - I don't see any other car that is reasonably priced.

Wife and I have looked at the CX-5 for ages and tried it a couple of times a while back. Lately we have had the opportunity to buy one and we tried out the CX-60 before retrying the CX-5. I was sold on the CX-60 right away. I love the size, the sound of the engine, the power train in general and not least the build quality. It's a really nice big SUV and I just couldn't come to terms with the CX-5 after trying it.

I’m sorry to say that I feel that you are kinda unjust to the car. You are driving a PHEV, but you honestly don’t judge it as such. Instead you keep on talking about weight and 6 cylinder engines. It may not be a Beemer but here in Denmark you will be asked to pay at least €30.000 more for an X3 with the same equipment. That is also some kind of money.

So many reviewers are, for lack of a better term, "car people", and for that reason often focus on things that I honestly don't care about at all. Much time is spent, here and in many reviews, talking about how it feels to drive and connection to the road and the engine. I guess this is relevant for a lot of people, but I would love to see reviews from a more practical and comfort perspective. I can't be alone in thinking most cars are way overpowered for my needs? I've had a Mazda cx-5 for about 6 years that I bought for having the best safety features at its price point, and I have never even pressed that pedal all the way down out of curiosity. The whole car market, including reviews, is incredibly frustrating for someone like me, I feel like my options are flimsy plastic cars (with too much road noise and lack of safety features) or paying for features I don't need at all (like mahogany or horsepower).

I am picking up mine next week, I lost 900€ over 3 years on my mazda 3 2019 lease. I love mazda and I am coming from bmw 3 series 335d's and such. Absolutely love Mazda. Volvo Xc60 has 2 years delivery time wait in Sweden, you can get this in 3-6 months tops. And for 20-30k euros less than a XC60, it's an easy choice. Mazda will sell this by loads and they deserve it. The new 8 speed gear box is amazing and a lot of stuff is amazing. My only complaints are the cheap key still, the opening doors / closing doors feel especially in the back doors. I would also love to open the windows and closing them by the key like you can on BMW.

in UK Volvo XC90 T8 recharge took 1 month to deliver, but I'm also interested in CX80 when it's available. Would go for CX90 but that's not available in this market. Very understated cars, and a lot of bang for the buck, also quite stealth. I would go PHEV for the Volvo and Diesel inline 6 for the CX80.

What! Only 400 to 440 klm range! At nearly 10lt / 100 kl economy! Sticking to the road limit in Australia of 110 klm/, I consistently get 1,400 klm range in my 2200+ kg 2015 2.2 litre diesel Mercedes ML. That is just under 7lt/100kl. A modern car should do a lot better than that.

Owned my new PHEV CX60 Homura for a month. None of the glitches reported in early production. The EV range predicted on start is typically 29 miles, but actual is better (I have twice exceeded 41 in warmer weather). As most of my journeys are short, I have used negligible petrol and exceeded “88 MPG”. I realize now that could have improved that by NOT using the when in hybrid mode button that faster guzzles fuel. Frankly, you only need to use that feature when you want to preserve battery for an ZERO emissions zone later in a journey (er, …where?). Instead, using the plug-in charging is the more efficient route and I reckon next month I will exceed “100MPG”. However, we still need to factor in electricity cost. Unfortunately, I am stuck on a (capped) £0.34 p/kWh tariff, but am still considerably bettering the miles per £ of my previous 173 g/km CO2 emitting Mercedes E350D despite the current UK high cost of electricity. My CX60 tail pipe emissions will be below 50 g/km as my personal motoring is 70%+ EV, but inevitable that will worsen over longer distances and if more use of the ICE. I reckon the PHEV is right for you if you are willing to properly plug-in and you optimize EV driving time over regular distances of under 200 miles between plug-in charges. If a seriously (every day) longer distance motorway driver, then the class leading CX60 diesel could possibly be a good choice given that over extreme regular longer distances the much heavier PHEV will inevitably progressively lose fuel and CO2 efficiency. The diesel is an interesting bold move by Mazda, but might be less successful in the UK than elsewhere given the bias of BIK company car tax breaks that are harder to justify for daily longer distance motorists (or those that inconsiderately don’t bother to plug-in). But the CX60 PHEV will hits the mark for most short commuters with only occasional longer hauls. In summary, a fantastic car, fantastic value, incredible style and equipment. I love it!

Interesting perspective. We had the 2015 173bhp diesel, and just recently swapped out for a 2021 2l automatic petrol. I loved the diesel, absolutely loath the petrol. Around town, if be lucky to get 30mpg, usually closer to 27. If there is lots of motorway driving, maybe lucky to get mid 30's and just once when the stars aligned managed 40, heavy, consistently slow moving motorway traffic, terribly terribly boring. Anyway, back on topic, we drove the diesel to Croatia maybe 5 times, and had no complaints really, fully loaded, bike rack with 4 bikes and a roof box. We looked at about 5 and 1/4 tanks round trip, including a decent chunk on the autobahn. We recently took the petrol to Italy, similar distance, but probably 9 or 10 tanks to get there and back. I was simply shocked. This, when sticking largely to the speed limit. The biggest issue, I believe was the fact that it just didn't have the oomph to go up the hills and spent so much of its time in 5th. Well the PHEV deal with that better, or will it be just as awful? Did the efficiencies in town (our majority) offset the poor engine (compared to the 3l/3.3l 6 cylinder). Thankfully, I'm about 3 years out from replacing the current car, so have time for most engine options to bed in and get the reviews.

Thank you very much for this excellent review! I am in the market for the CX-60 and especially the PHEV version. The place I am living is not ready for BEVs, at least for long distance drives. But the CX-60’s EV range is enough for me for my daily drive and I can charge at home. The petrol engine will make the occasional longer journeys easy. We currently driving a CX-5 and a CX-8, both Diesel. I assume that the CX-60 drives more like the CX-8 and I meanwhile prefer the more comfortable way of the CX-8.

I test drove the Homura trim last day and it turned out to be a very likeable car. It is capable of doing many things, but probably not the best at all of those. It is a very sensible vehicle, which can be one of the best middle of the road cars for the family. Lack of space in the back (relative to its overall length) was a sore point and the switch for the sunroof is mounted on a panel made of candy floss. I might just wait for the CX 80.

And your suspicion on whether Mazda not ready to go more hybrid or electric models, well, they're building cars with Toyota in Alabama now. If the car is not charged over that distance then, mate you were reviewing a 2.5l petrol, loaded down with batteries; you were NOT giving the consumption of the PHEV.

I ordered and MX60 which should be delivered at the beginning of March. I need 4WD with “mild” off road given I live on a farm in a rural location. I do want a reasonable turn of speed, but do not need a supercar. As all your reviews point out the CX60 is beautifully built, has a better user experience (UI/UX) than the German competition, and is better value for money. I have chosen the Homura trim as being more practical than the gorgeous bright interior of the highest trim. I have picked most extras on top. I like Autogefuhl reviews because they are meticulous, never completely trash a supplier, always praise where it is due, but never dodge a drawback or fault. That said there can be a hint of group think about what feels good to drive. I like a much firmer suspension setup than is the Autogefuhl house view, possibly reflected by what I have driven so far - see below. I have driven quite a lot of German cars, again see below, but I really do not like the present choices any of the big three are making about interior design or software. In this respect the Mazda approach over its entire range is refreshing. I also think that Mazda may have it right that bigger batteries to cover range anxiety may not be the long term way to build an EV, but more likely reflects the present poor state of public charging in most countries. The Mazda MX30 R EV is especially interesting with a Wankel engine generator, small battery, and limited electric range. As a piece of speculation, a Wankel engine should work well burning green hydrogen if they can solve the NOx emission problems; then who needs a big battery? I am male and 67 years old. When I lived in New England in the late 1970s I had a VW Rabbit and then a VW Sirocco (spelling?). Thereafter back in the UK I drove two Alfa Romeo GTV6s, two Lancia Delta Integrales, a VW Corrado V6, an Audi TT (the only dud), an R32, and latterly two Audi RS3s. Somewhere in one of the reviews one reviewer asked for some background information about people commenting, so I hope this information is useful. If you ask which cars gave the most pleasure it was undoubtedly the GTV6s, but the reliability was appalling.

I do understand about your feelings. Mazdas were always known as nimble cars thanks to their lightweightness, phev brings a huge amount of weight with it and that's why the car itself behave different than a Mazda. In reality, the can still handle well enough but this contrast creates confusion. The other details you gave are quite helpful, thank you

What a great review. Love Thomas' but this is something else. I have the CX-5 Exclusive-Line with DAP 2.0 MHEV. Got it on the 2nd of October 2023. I love it but I am already sizing up the CX-60 in Takumi trim. I cannot have an EV because I have no off-road parking and I am a disabled driver, bad back also ha ha, C4-6 Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury(Syringomyelia) and Traumatic Head Injury, about another 100 ailments. There is just no places suitable to charge. My passenger can plug in at a supermarket. Not interested in the 'saving the planet' because any volcanic eruption undoes anything the population tries to reverse. It's a green tax drawn up to milk the motorist further. Driving should be safe, fun and sociable not trying to kill each other over your choice environmental impact. Pull the wool from your eyes and get on with your life. The planet's population isn't going to commit financial suicide over little emissions compared to natural magma production.

I think to Mazda and even Toyota, fully electric cars are not the real solution to global warming and emission control (lithium battery weight, pollution of mining the lithium from the ground and the range problem, and lack of fun/drivability), and hence they still insist of producing hybrid cars. I think they need a few years to get the right adjustment to make hybrid powerchains with the same fun-to-drive sensation as a gas-powered MX-5 or Mazda 3

Why get the four pot hybrid? The straight 6 is the way to go. Unless you're also talking about F1 engines, there is no replacement for displacement. Take advantage of the fact that Mazda are among the last bastion of automotive manufacturers to retain (and bring back) a 6 cylinder option.

@28:55 ... did you try to adjust the custom equalizer settings. LOL I was driving today and you couldn't while in motion. Stop, and it suddenly lets you ... but you can adjust 50 different other things. Why the 50 others but not that one ... that's dumb. With android auto, you can't enter in destination names in text mode unless it is in park. In drive, you can cycle through 10 menus and hit 3 buttons to get to speech mode and say your destination then correct it three times because it picked blvd instead of highway of a different city. I found this out when my passenger tried to do it. Like right!? shouldn't they be able to do it? And it was like, no you can't, he's driving. And also found via my passenger, that you can use the text feature on your phone then plug it back in and it's there LMAO. Dunno about Apple, don't have an iPhone.

A 1-month owner of the Mazda CX-9 here in the States. I agree that smaller Mazda vehicles handle better, and that since Mazda has not a long history of developing larger vehicles, that is not a surprise. However, I find CX-9 a very competent, utilitarian choice than I originally expected - this was not my first choice at all. Due to inventory problems, I was forced to choose this or a Subaru Ascent. I find my daily driving to be very satisfactory, and considering the size - 5+meters in length, the fuel economy is pretty decent. I do look forward to possibly replacing this with the CX90, but I do see some philosophical limitations self-imposed by Mazda in that they are not too into developing a vehicle that will give you many features (like the Koreans) but rather be conservative and stick to what they do best - give one of the most competent, well-built vehicles for the mass market. It will be very interesting to see how they developed the CX-90 for the US (and for markets with tastes for larger vehicles like such) when they go public in Jan 2023.

I see Mazda hasn't fixed its lane keep assist one bit since 2016 when I briefly owned a CX-5. None of Mazd's semi-autonomous systems can be dubbed working or safe. Atrocity is the the best word to describe them. Fraud is equally good.
