I didn't expect this.
The Mazda CX-60 really, really surprised me. And not in a good way.
I've just spent days driving the new-generation 2024 Mazda CX-60 plug-in hybrid model, and it's not great.
My detailed review shows there are some concerning elements to the drive experience that aren't as refined or luxurious as they should be, for the money that's being asked.
And remember, this is an expensive midsize SUV from a mainstream brand. In my experience and my opinion, it doesn't feel like good value
It also has a hard ride, lots of road noise, and it's not that much fun to drive in PHEV spec. The back seat is tight, and the boot is smaller than it should be, too.
Watch to see if you agree. And let me know in the comments if you don't!

Thanks for the upload. For what its worth, I have both the Outlander PHEV and cx60 PHEV. Outlander feels like you are driving a boat, and cx60 is really fun to drive with excellent handling and acceleration. Yes the Outlander can feel smoother on some roads, however the cx60 feels sporty and handles more like a smaller cx5. The interior of the cx60 is very nice and I really appreciate the tech (note the screen is touch for Android Auto/Apple play if you set it even in motion although I personally like the tactile dial). As such before this review I didnt even compare my Outlander to my cx60.. Just thought I would share my experience as to be honest, im a little confused by this review.... shows how opinions can differ I guess!

That's okay -- I'm a motoring journalist so I'm supposed to pick up on all the differences, of which there are many and the most notable being the Mazda's unsettled ride compared with the Mitsubishi's squishier, more enjoyable setup.

I bought the CX60 GT PHEV and I added a vision pack. It has been a week so far. The smart lease option made the price very attractive as it is all from my pre tax. The Apple car play is a touch screen but the option needs to be activated through my Mazda. I had 60 km range from EV mood. The sport mood is fun though and makes the car very responsive. I agree that the driving wheel feels heavy. The advantage of this PHEV is the toying capacity (2.5 tons) which beats other brands. There is option to charge the battery while driving using the petrol engine. So even on a long drive it can be charged. As I mentioned if it is a smart lease, the fuel price comes as pre tax. I think it is a good option if people wants to get benefit from the government incentive. I had Cx5 GT diesel and this CX60 is a big upgrade on every way. The infotainment system is really impressive. I did not like lack of mobile application to control the car like USA. Thanks for your comments. No one gave the average fuel after the battery is empty except you. Even Mazda did not mention it 😂

Somone who is comparing Genesis to this Mazda is not serious. Genesis is a moneypitt and far from the reliability of what Mazda vehicles offer. Bumpyness means that tha car is set for more sportier and agil driving and Mazda is aming as usual at their zoom zoom mentality. It is not a boring brand when it comes to SUVs or any other vehicles but it is far from uncomfortable.

Hi Matt, I have been loving your reviews since your previous channel. So firstly congrats on your new channel and all the best. A very detailed review with very honest points. I would love to see some of the gravel, soft roading and fire trail reviews on these AWD SUV's, in additionto your usual detailed reviews.. That's what separates them from sedans, so why not take that into the equation? There are not any channels that do it, so people never get to know the limits of these crossover SUVs. Congrats once again and may your channel grows far and beyond.
@therightcar
@therightcar 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for that mate. Honestly, I think your take on the gravel component is a bit mislead. SUVs aren’t for people who go on gravel. They’re for people who think there’s a level of additional practicality and status that comes with an SUV body. More than 2/3s of SUVs (by my rough maths) are 2WD. So that’s redundant. But AWD? Maybe. CarExpert has done some off-road stuff in less off-roady SUVs. They have a big team and more time than I do! Haha.

Great honest review Matt, thank you. I've driven both petrol and diesel variants and whilst I liked the overall package I felt a little let down. Totally agree with the rear seat space comment. I did like the 6 cylinder drive but missed the nippyness of the smaller CX5. I was hoping this would convert me over, but I'm not convinced its worth another $20k. Good fuel efficiency with that diesel though! Love your reviews, always a thumbs up.

I feel like Mazda have great designers, good engineers and awful strategic management. They've wasted a bunch of time pursuing various SkyActiv variants and are now trying to get into the luxury market with the same badge and by the sounds of it cars that don't live up to the price tag. They should double down on what they are good at which is great handling, beautiful mainstream cars and continue building aspirational sports cars as their halos.

I’m able to go either direction; 1) Low cost value for money SUV or 2) Luxury SUV in the 70-80k region from a Japanese brand. I saw multiple reviews including yours on XuV 700 and saw it perfectly fit the value for money proposition, hence booked an Xuv700, expected delivery is in Sep. Then Mazda launched the cx60, I love Mazda and have been waiting for this to be launched, so took a test drive of the petrol version on Adelaide hills, just loved loved the vehicle, especially the tan leather one. I’m now contemplating if I should cancel the XuV order and book a CX 60. Unable to conclude that it’s luxury enough to command a 70-80k price. pretty sure that the gruffness at take off is due tot he torque converter, this is where CVT are so much smoother, that said the advantage of a torque converter auto is once you are up and moving you don't have that that "elastic band" effect where it feels like the CVT is spooling up and then lets go like a rubber band. would, I have noticed that with the Rav4 Hybrid I'm currently driving while my vehicle is getting a major service done to it. As for the rest of the package, meh, why bother just get the CX-5 in top grade, I'd rather the 2.5L turbo petrol with 6-speed torque converter and AWD since everything else appears to be near the same save for the fact this is RWD bias AWD versus FWD bias AWD, but is that even an issue since both are docent in terms of steering and ride balance? However f course I'm not factoring in the "hyrbid/PHEV" tech that this offers, that could be potentially be an advantage. Also 3.3L inline 6cyl? I'm old enough to remember the good ol Kingswood and commodore with an inline 6cyl 3.3, obviously the tech disparity is enormous just one example: 2 jet port carby pushrod non cross flow with (at last version VK spec) around 86kW but did have decent torque of 247Nm at 1,800rpm and of course the good ol 3-speed "trimatic" torque converter auto ... ok enough about that.

I think the problem here is that everyone who jumps into this car, expects it to feel like a BMW, Volvo or Lexus. This perhaps, is why it feels under-done. Mazda have always shied away from being too main-stream in their design philosophy for the past 2 decades, and that may be why they focused on just producing a car that is uniquely Mazda in the way it tackles things. The new 8-speed gearbox (no torque converter) is a completely fresh invention and will obviously have some teething issues, but that's not to say that Mazda won't do any software tweaks over the years to smooth things out in the service intervals. That said, I drove one the other day and absolutely loved it for what it is, not for what I want/expect it to be. The car felt really solid on the road and was really fun to drive despite the so called "lack of refinement". Also, all the interior plastics were of exceptionally high quality imo (I worked inside dashboards for a living as auto elec for 15 years, so, I know what crap plastic looks and feels like). However, I do agree that the price tag is a bit much, especially given that the customers are essentially lab rats in a design experiment. Which is why I'm opting for the PHEV and capitalising on the Australian government FBT exemption that saves you around 50k over a 5 year lease (all other tax benefits included). With this incentive, the salary sacrifice commitment for a PHEV CX60 is similar to a $40k internal combustion car. Thanks for the honest review mate.

Thanks Matt - putting over $60k into a depreciating liability is not good value for money so it’s no wonder that the second hand car market has got to the point where a 2002 Subaru Forester with nearly 400000 km is going for $4000 or more - if you keep your $60k plus vehicle for over 10 years then you’re OK like I did with my $10000 2004 Forester XT (kept for 12 years) - otherwise you’re better of putting it into an appreciating asset like property - I’ve never liked Mazdas because of their harsh and noisy ride and with fewer options left in the Japanese market I’d find something diesel without a CVT as I’m regional an electric is not an option - the cheaper Chinese brands will start to threaten these overpriced brands but I wouldn’t touch anything Chinese with a barge pole.

P50e is the most budget range available for CX-60 but if you jump into GT range or above the interior material is definitely competeive against its rivals. Agreed on PHEV's refinement. It is 'ok' for daily drive but the drivetrain can be done better. The real gem for CX-60 is the 6 cyclinder petrol which offer much nicer engine note and better ride due to lighter weight. Suspension is on the firmer side comaprd to other Mazda but honestly it's not as firm as model 3 which I recently sat on one. The best buy is petrol GT which is about 70k driveaway.

Thanks for the truth as you saw it in this car. Most reviewers don't want to be offside with the OEM's, but if like the Koreans, Mazda take it on board this an an improvement to continue on the next model, it re affirms the old adage, Don't Buy the First of Anything. What do you think of that new white paint ? I saw it on a CX-5 and it looked like undercoat that had been wind blasted in the Simpson Desert. I prefer the older white pearl with a clear coat primer. It does look bad on the 60, especially on that passenger door side with the light shining on it. The door skins and panels are too slab shaped. Hyundai may have been right with the folded crease lines on the Tucson to visually break up the image that the eye see's.

Thanks mate. To be fair to the other reviewers who went on the launch, they likely didn’t get a chance to live with the car in more realistic or challenging circumstances like I did. And nor would they have had the chance to do the testing and real life stuff I did. But that’s why I think this review is so valuable to actual buyers. Thanks!

This car is the result of Mazda wanting to be a segment first by offering a V6 with a Hybrid that saves fuel, concept doesnt seem to work. The pricing is Mazda pushing their premium label into the luxury market, this would indicate Mazda needs a luxury brand but I dont think their new owners would allow that. To be fair on the practicality, Mazda hasnt been known for that, their cars are typically cramped in the back and in the boot. This car appeals to that niche of people that want a V6 but want to have the illusion of massive fuel savings that will justify the asking price, it wont.

I have driven a Lexus nd and the elastic band gearbox is whiny and revs high but slow to react. Genesis in UK no infrastructure. BMW overpriced and everything is an extra. I have the plug in EV petrol hybrid and it drives great but suspension is more hard due to weight of car. The diesel is 150 kg lighter is ver smooth with better ride quality.

There are fringe benefit tax offsets and advantages whereby you can make it make a lot of sense. But the PHEV feels unfinished in this application. An Outlander (with the benefit of decades of PHEV finesse) is a far more compelling option for those in the market for this type of car.

@paulsciacca6126 10 ай бұрын
@@therightcar I see where you are coming from, but I don’t agree. Back years ago when EV’e were a ‘lesser’ choice? Sure. But they have caught up with range, power, and price parity where they are being cross shopped against ICE competitors now. So keeping them seperate in comparisons I don’t agree with when reviewing cars in 2023 and beyond because that’s not what your everyday consumer is doing anymore. With the CX-60 in particular. It’s almost the same size, and competing in that ‘sub luxury / premium’ space, with similar pricing to the Model Y. A side by side comparison could be good. Considering the popularity of the Model Y, and the Mazda brand in Australia with their latest offering. You could even do the same with the Corolla Cross Hybrid Atmos vs the BYD Atto 3 too. Very similar size, money, equipment levels and power. And when the Dolphin, MG4 and Ora are all available, I would expect/hope we see some comparisons that throw in the Mazda 3, Corolla, etc.
