The New Amsterdam was a bar in San Francisco. The singer had a pal named Marty Jones who was in a band with him called the Himalayas. Marty's dad was a flamenco guitarist who lived in Spain. When they went out to watch him they would see bigger musicians and imagine how different their lives would be if they were famous.
@jimholmes69221 күн бұрын
You beat me to it... They weren't performing that night. They were just hanging out at the bar. The line about how when everybody loves you, you'll never be lonely was in reference to the fact that Chris Isaak's drummer came in with 3 girls. Chris Isaak was big at the time and the Counting Crows had not had a hit yet. So they were envious of the drummer

This is also one of the most ironic songs ever, in that it was about wanting to be famous, and it actually DID propel them into a level of fame he couldn't foresee or understand, and he felt it necessary to take about a year off and go back to bartending to try to escape the sudden, terrifying fame! Their follow up album is powerful and unique.

"ROUND HERE" Official Video by The Counting Crows is a MUST to listen to. Also "A LONG DECEMBER", "ANNA BEGINS", "HANGINROUND", "BIG YELLOW TAXI", "COLORBLIND". Adam Duritz, the lead singer and writer, is such a Lyrical Poetic Genius!!! He writes all of their songs. The version of the songs will change too. Adam sings "Freestyle" when performing and he'll just sing what comes to him/what he feels, at any given time. He is a True Artist!! He has such an "Aura" about him. He is such a Vibe! Love these guys!! This song Never gets old. It's a Timeless Classic!!

"Its really a song about all the dreams and all the things that make you go into whatever it is that seizes your heart… whether its being a rock star, or being a doctor...Its also kina cautionary, cause its about how misguided you can be about some of those things and how hollow they can be too. DUDE! You as a lyricist will lose your mind if you really get into their music! I think Adam is the greatest writer of our time! It's the way he describes things instead of saying them out right... for instance he has a line that says " if dreams are like movies then films are like memories about ghost" or "I rode a ladder that climbed across the nation" instead of just saying I rode on a train. His imagery is unrivaled!!!

If I remember the story correctly, Adam Duritz (lead singer of Counting Crows) and his friend (who's father was a Flamenco guitar player) went to a bar and they saw the drummer for Chris Isaac come in and he had some women with him and clearly was benefitting from being a noted musician of his caliber. The fame, the money, the women, etc. And they sat there basically envisioning their lives and what it would be like to be in that same position. So the song is about wanting fame (for a number of reasons) and how when you get it, your going to be happy because, how could not be when everybody loves you and your getting all of that attention, women and money.

The album August and Everything After is an amazing atmospheric and mood altering listen. Well worth an hour of your time.
@allenelliott496421 күн бұрын
The song is basically the view of an artist trying to "make it". At that point, he thinks that if he's popular, then everyone will love him and things will be geat. Interestingly, about 5 years after Mr. Jones, Counting Crows did a live album called "Across A Wire". Now, a very popular band, Adam Duritz seemed to have also experienced the other side of fame as he changed the ending of Mr. Jones to : "When everyone loves you ,sometimes that's just about as f*cked up as you can be. Can't you hear me, cause I'm screaming, but I did not go outside yesterday. Oh, don't wake me, cause I was dreaming and I might stay inside again today. Cause Mr. Jones and me, we don't see each other much any more."

Sometimes you don't have to understand all the lyrics. Loving the music and knowing the lyrics is more important to me than knowing the meaning behind the song. You learn the meaning as you learn the song. You do a great job trying to understand the lyrics right away. Because you only have a limited amount of time to understand the song and the artist. 😊

Counting Crows as well as Hootie and the Blowfish were among my favorites on the radio during that time period also. There were a couple others. But music changed so much. Music was such an integral part of my life. I always said I was never gonna be one of "those" that stayed stuck in the past. Well I turned into one of "those" until recently. Access to all the new independent content brought me back to an appreciation for fresh music that can now bypass the gatekeepers in a cookie cutter industry that too often robs artists of their creativity.

Pausing at 8:53... I can remember in high school, thinking "some day I'm going to be a rockstar.. no one will know me, but they will love me".. that's what I craved at the time, because I felt so horrible about myself, but of course, everyone wants to be loved... I didn't want anyone to know me. So I get those words... "I want to be someone who believes"... I feel like in the nineties, there were a lot of songs with a spiritual yearning to them, which is why it hit me so hard back then and resonated with me so much..... Mr. Jones is such a great song. The lead singer for Counting Crows sings back up for the Wallflowers in "5th Avenue Heartache", takes a good song and pushes it over the top to make it really something special, imo.

Pretty sure he told the story one of those nights that the song is basically a fictional story based off the night hearing his buddy’s dad’s band play where Mr. Jones is the Bartender at a bar “The New Amsterdam” in this story and he’s singing about shooting the Bull and chatting with the Bartender about “Tall Tales” we all tell bellied up to the Bar (especially with the “Beautiful ladies” around) and being inspired to become a musician.

Flamenco is both a guitar/music genre and serious dance from Spain. I like the story provided below that his friend Jones’ dad was a flamenco guitarist and they’d go see him perform, so yeah: very straightforward - also very natural our young thoughts and hopes for our futures. An “Everyman” perspective of our early 20s. GREAT track. GREAT singer hella performance, a huge smash for obvious reasons. Not only a great song but he just seems like someone who’d be fun and cool and relaxed to hit bars with 😄 Doesn’t “I wish I was beautiful” just mean “I wish I was as attractive as this beautiful woman then I might have a chance”?😉 As with any smash success that virtually everyone loves, the singer apparently (and of course undeservedly) experienced some pretty vicious backlash - we all know there are forever bitter trolls who love nothing more than to try to take good people down. It hit hard, but he shook it off and still performs -toured just last year ✊🏽😎
