@@ashash1338you shift up to go faster, after you've shifted up you would shift back down to slow down. Same concept as a car. Although I'm very new to motorcycles, from the videos I've seen, N (or neutral) is between 1st and 2nd. The gear shifter, which would be near your left foot, instead of shifting completely up to 2nd, you would go a half click up to put it into neutral. Pro tips for those who are about to take the course. First of all: congratulations! You're now one of us, always broke because you'll spend way too much time and money on biking. "Oh, I will not", you say? Yeah, right... So, here's a couple of tips: - Don't be nervous. You will look like an idiot a couple of times, either by dumping the clutch, braking too hard or wondering why the bike won't start while your killswitch will be activated. Don't worry, this course is specifically designed to learn about these things. - Listen to your coach and your coach only. You'll probably be mixed with some dude who's riding for years illegally and now wants to be properly insured. This dude will probably have a thousand of bad habits and will try to teach you how to do things. Don't listen to him, listen to your coach. "Know it alls" are the worst. - Heads up. Always. The bike will go naturally where you look. If you look down, you're going down. Look where you want to go while making sure your surroundings are safe. - Don't skip steps. Chances are you'll master some things faster than others. Take this moment to be a perfectionnist and make that things you master a thing you could do with your eyes closed. Why? Because there's nothing worst to your coach than you skipping steps. If you have trouble with some aspect, it'll be much easier for him to find the problem if you don't hurdle over exercices. Yes, you WILL do some things wrong. Don't sweat it and don't take it personnally: you're there to become better. - It might be a rental bike, granted, but act as if it was yours and as if you'd still have 6 years of payments on the rig. Your MSF school do miracles every day trying to keep these bikes fonctionning properly, please respect the bike and the time they put on it. - Don't EVER hesitate to ask questions to your coach, even if you feel it'll sound stupid. Chances are: your mates will have the same question. Plus, if you don't feel safe about an aspect of the bike, the worst thing is to go on the road without knowing how to deal with it. ASK. QUESTIONS. Your coach rolls his eyes hearing your question? Big deal, don't worry about it: he probably had a rough day, just like you, hearing stupid shits over and over again. Don't take it personally. - You're probably watching way too many videos about how you ride a bike, at the moment. You might be overwhelmed by the amount of steps to drive the bike. Don't worry: about 85 to 90 % of it will come naturally and instinctively as soon as you'll sit on the rig. - The clutch if your friend. Don't be afraid of it because you never drove a stick. I can safely say a 100% of my students got it in a course, two courses tops. Even the more...how to say...mentally challenged get it. So you're not stupid, right? There you go, you'll get it. First thing you'll know, you'll be in third gear and you'll ask your coach when it'll be time to go on the road. - If possible and if your MSF course has different bikes, try them all. Perfect moment to find out what's your riding style. I can safely say about half of students think they want to ride a type of bike and end up being much more comfortable riding another. I thought I was an adventure bike guy: oh hell no. I ended up being the biggest cruisers savant. - Buy PROPER safety equipments. That cheap DOT helmet you find on eBay AIN'T SAFE. Put money on the side to buy good, bullet proof, proper gloves, boots and pants. A waterproof jacket is a must, while it goes without saying a high rated helmet is essential. There's never been so many options to look good with bike gears: don't go cheap on it. You'll be more comfortable, more relaxed, you won't be cold on the bike and you'll enjoy it much more than with a cheap Temu jacket that won't make a difference if you slide. There you have it. Now, enjoy the ride. It's a beautiful thing to do, you won't regret it :) Oh, and if you're afraid to fail. I only failed two students in 5 years of coaching. Two know-it-alls who were riding (baddly) since years. It's not rocket science, you'll get it. And if your coach knows a thing or two, he will spend more time with you if you struggle with something.

@@johnhill2927 Great stuff! You’ll love it. Normal thing to be nervous about it if it’s a total unknown to you. If you think about it, not being nervous to ride a motorized powerful two-wheel vehicle for the first time wouldn’t be very sane. 😉 Now, my very best advice: don’t be hard on yourself. It’s not an exam, it’s a playful challenge. Eyes up, look at where you’re going and everything will be just fine. Don’t hesitate to take breaks if you feel like it. Again, not an exam. Your coach will respect your time and space if it makes sure you don’t drop the rig. 😂 Oh! And that little slow speed cones challenge that looks stupid? Take it seriously. This is the most crucial exercise to learn how to master balance on the bike instead of the bike mastering you.

I’ll be honest… the MSF course was my first time ever on a bike. I feel like if you have zero expectations, and want a decent baseline of info plus the use of a bike and a much easier version of a road test… it’s perfect for you. Like yammie says, def pack an extra Ritalin in your lunch… it’s highly repetitive and slow paced, so just chill out and know that it will be two days of your life you’ll never get back, swallow it…. And just know that after it’s over you’ll easily convert your permit to a license. My biggest big of advice is to not stress, and don’t strive to be perfect… the final test is literally easier than the skill drills… so just breathe and stay in the moment. You’ll be fine.

I made my only 2 errors during the final testing on Day 2. The first was a simple clutch stall after completing a stop, an error I'd never committed before. The second was on the final test. A sharp, low speed turn followed immediately by a "high speed" run designed to test hard braking prior to a long sweeping turn. Approaching the hard brake zone, my hand did not let go of the throttle. I was sure I'd rolled off the gas but my lizard brain had other ideas. With the bike revving hard into the corner I yanked on the clutch and on the rear brake. I went all the way around the long sweeper --- staying in my lane --- scraping the exhaust the entire way with the engine screaming. Exiting the turn, and with the throttle thankfully relaxed I calmly came to a stop at the designated spot. I looked over at the rider coach, who was still waving his arms in the air. Moments earlier I could hear his screams over the engine's. As I got back into line, my classmates all cheered me and said it was the wildest thing they'd ever seen. So ... if I can pass, you can too.

Did this in summer of 2021, was the easiest thing ever. There were people that were very, very bad and still passed... so I'm sure anyone can do it, just give it a shot. On our final testing day it was raining and the instructors allowed us to attempt the test which was not very easy given the bike wheels were very bad but everyone still passed without dropping. Mostly because we all just decided to purposefully fail the swerving part of the test by riding really slowly because if we rode the speed required we would've most definitely slipped and dropped the bike.

During the entire day this guy is just the most obnoxious know it all, can't tell him anything, ass for the entire program. Well, last exercise of the day is the panic stop in 2nd gear. He is last to perform it and proceeds to come in too hot, lock the front brake and well you can see where this is going. While he is still retrieving bits of his fairing and mirror from the parking lot the instructor is doing the final day assessment portion. When asking the group what if anything they learned new, relearned or just found they got better at, he firmly stated he didn't learn anything and this was a total waste of time because as he stated earlier, he fell off the turnip truck and onto a motorcycle and you ain't gonna show him anything new.

If you're in a hot area, don't take one in the summer. That's when I did mine and I was fine, but I've known several people who got dehydrated and tired by the end of the day and failed the final test despite riding flawlessly the rest of the day.

I finished day one of the MSF course today 🤦🏽♀️ I made a lot of mistakes and even dropped the bike braking on a tight turn but got back on and started to become more confident the instructors said I have to pick up my speed.. so I’m praying to God I do better tomorrow and pass the skills test 🙏🏽

My DMV test consisted of the tester telling me to ride down the road opposite their front door, turn around at the second side street and come back and park the bike. Off I went. As I turned around at the second side street I saw him turn his back and walk back into the building. By the time I got back, parked the bike and got my helmet off he was coming back out with my full license. Yup 1974 New Zealand was a whole lot more casual than now. Been riding ever since. Haven't stopped learning and still able to scare the crap out of myself. Best life hobby ever.

I kinda resonate with the story you said about the female taking the msf course just to get it out of the way when she gets her real license. As a fellow female im kinda like her but i dont plan on getting a real license cars give me anxiety but weirdly enough motorcycles dont so i cant wait to get my motorcycle license and ofc my first motorcycle! I already picked out all the gear i want but for my msf course im just gonna get the helmet and gloves

I took my riding class yesterday. Had to leave early because I had dropped the bike so many times and hurt myself so bad I couldn't get it upright from lock. I kept trying everytime. I was so hurt the instructor made me stop. Got pinned under the bike 3 times and kept getting too much in my own head. Right now I feel like a failure but when I heal I will try again.

Funny watching this . Been riding almost 50 years . Bought a ultra classic big heavy bike last year . I own many others . However I'm going to sign up for a class as I need to learn even more riding this one . I love my old 60-70s bike . Just bought a 2022 RE intercepter 650 . Like it better than my Norton commando . Old is cool but looking old with more refinement is much better . Never to old to learn new skills .

Just completed my A license in Sweden, they test very similar things but you have a course you need to complete at max 4mph to prove that you have good control and understanding of balance and the clutch, a high speed course with emergency swerve and slalom, then there's a road test to prove your understanding of road laws and that you ride defensively. Before your test there is a mandatory 4 hour classroom session telling you not to drink and ride and what to look out for on your bike, also a mandatory classroom/on bike portion about riding safety. All in all a $2000 experience which gives you the confidence to jump on any bike. My first real big bike being an m1800r.

I took the MSF course back in June of 2022… it was everything I expected after watching a ton of videos and practicing on my son’s bicycle… me and another guy were already pretty skilled riders and we led the majority of the practices.. when we took the test we actually didn’t know we where taking it… that part was well enjoyable bcs nobody tensed up trying to be perfect on the bikes… the word test we literally went they it together bcs the Msf instructor was more on the riding then the testing part and even the least experienced young lady passed… great experience and I actually rode my bike to class the last day…it was awesome…

Took the MSF in June of this year. Well worth the time and money. The instructors I had were genuinely interested in our success. Be patient and open minded and you will have a good time. I learned quite a bit even though I had previous dirt bike experience in my teens. Road riding is a very different animal especially when you start factoring in traffic laws and other vehicles on the road with you. Really helps if you know how to ride a bicycle so you understand the balance better. Also really helps if you know how to operate a manual transmission.

Remember, mistakes happen too, when I took the msf course almost 10 years ago, I accidentally did a front end wheelie during the quick stop portion of training. I weighed almost as much as the buel blast we trained on, so when I applied more front break pressure in attempt to correct my heavy rear break use, I shifted forward which caused this. The instructor faced with now a 370 lbs motorcycle and almost 340 lb man doing a front end wheelie approaching him, was fairly mid bowel release watch as I did manage to come back down the way I came, but immediately dumped the bike for a hard landing and never before doing such a maneuver. Now I’ll be taking the course again, (funnily enough failed the first time bc I was going fast enough for the curve test to be passing) this time to get the endorsement and ride my 2008 softail deluxe around. Finally my own vehicle as a semi truck driver.

Obligatory UK chime-in: Just to explain for those in the US who don't know; in the UK we have a 1 day course called a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). From what I've heard, the MSF is essentially a two-day version of that. On the CBT you get a classroom portion, practical skills such as figure-of-8, slow ride, U-Turn etc and then a road-riding segment at the end of the day. The CBT is similarly almost impossible to fail outside of crashing or being utterly terrible at bike control. At the end you are indeed allowed to ride a motorcycle. But with a few restrictions. It cannot be more than 125cc with max 14.6bhp, you must display a 'L' Plate on the bike at all times, you cannot carry a passenger and you are not permitted to use highways. It is also valid for only two years at which point you must either stop riding or renew it. It is a criminal offence to ride without a valid CBT or to violate the terms of the CBT and can result in a two year ban from motorcycles, and a lot of police officers do ride so they know the rules. On a side note; a helmet is always mandatory for any motorcycle; we are not allowed to ever ride on public roads without a helmet. So for what looks like little more than a two-day version of the CBT to be allowed any bike you like sounds kind of insane to us here in the UK because it is considered that level of training is no where near enough to be safe on anything bigger than a 125cc bike. Honestly, I'd love to do an actual MSF just to be able to compare it to a CBT to see if it is anything more. I have no doubt with two days instead of the one the MSF can hone skills and help riders learn much more but the program sounds like the same as a CBT. To compare: for a full unrestricted license in the UK you must be over 24 years old and already hold a valid CBT and it must be on a 600/650cc class bike. I had about 4 1/2 years of 125cc riding and I did 6 days of training (4 days, an unlucky fail, followed by 2 more than a pass). Our test, by independent examiners, includes a manoeuvres segment (Including an emergency swerve and emergency brake) which you can fail surprisingly easily, followed by a 40min road segment where you are assessed. One 'Major' mark is a fail, which can include things like speeding repeatedly, not stopping and putting your foot down at a 'Stop' sign or causing another vehicle to have to brake sharply (Ie you cut them up). Again, it's very easy to fail and very few (around 20%) pass first time. So when Pappa Yam says us in Europe and UK are always aghast at the MSF, you can see why; our testing is REALLY demanding on even experienced riders.

The motorcycle skills test for getting your endorsement is so easy. Do not be intimidated. Weaving, U-turn, brake hard. Congratulations you passed. It's that simple. Go get yours. In my state you can use a 125 scooter that takes a cycle plate. The cheapest places are BYOB which is an advantage to you. The more expensive places are going to give you a TW200 to sit on. (Edit) I had my permit for one day. I took the test at a DMV on a Monday. It's 20 questions you must get 16. Went to century driving School for an appointment Tuesday morning to take my skills test. Wednesday is the late night at my Secretary of State and I had my license. $6 DMV test. $40 century driving school. $9 new license with endorsement. Amen

1. Scan your license. 2. Breathalyzer interlock. 3. Biometric ignition lock. 4. Lanyard that kills the bike if you fall or fly off. 5. 1 ticket, no bike. Permanantly. 6. Use this for other types vehicles, adjusting for vehicle operating system.

Just got mine before summer, as someone who grew up racing motocross it was stupid easy. If you have bike knowledge already you got nothing to worry about you will pass. If you never rode a bike before you might need practice cause they do watch to see if your squirrelly or shaky. My instructors actually sent a couple people home cause they weren't ready & I think they made the right call those people would die on the streets. But they did offer 1 on 1 coaching with them for free which is pretty cool just wouldn't be with the rest of the class .

2 months ago, I failed my test but they allowed me a retest and I passed. In the swerve, the throttle ripped on its own because the bike was a piece of shit (or I'm an idiot and pulled on the throttle when I pressed right). I also missed on the box. Retest went perfectly fine with no issues. The only iffy part of that test is the box. Don't sweat falling over. That was my issue. You're not going to fall over. The bike wants to stay upright. Look through where you're going.

I just did mine, all I can say is: -Look through the corner; that was my only critique given -use the clutch to help around slow obstacles since the throttle is on off-ey at low rpm Also don't flip your bike. I went to the AM session and saw some dude lock up the bike front brakes and sent himself and the bike forward in a flip. Granted he did manage to stop in 5 feet

You system is so funny. Just a few weeks ago i finally after about 6 months of work got my A licens at the very old age of 39. I tried to get a spot at a drivingschool but weren't so lucky so i did what i could privately but failed first drivingtest. Feeling beet down i got an email about two weeks after that a school hade gotten a few places freed up after some students hade dropped out saying biking isn't for them after all. after that it took me about three weeks and i got my license :) i have now been driving to and from work for the past three ish weeks and loving every minut of it. Also i have to say the system you guys i have, if we hade that here i would just start taking the bus, the roads here and unsafe as they are we don't need people in traffic that literally got their licens in a box of cereals.

It surprises me how lenient the American msf course if compared to the European CBT, Mod 1 and Mod 2 courses. Go outside the box in a u turn? Fail. Put a foot down to guide yourself? Fail. Drop the bike? Fail. Stall too often? Fail. Become a hazard on the road even if the incident that caused it wasn't your fault? Fail. Don't do enough life saver checks? Fail. Don't indicate to go straight over an an island? Fail. I've done both the bike courses and driving test and there's genuinely conflicting things in some areas about correct procedures. I managed to pass both car and bike first time but I know people who've not been so lucky and 95% of the time it really is over something silly.

When it comes to the gear for your course there's a few things to keep in mind. First of all, helmet rentals are available most if not all of the time but most other gear (except for maybe gloves) will be up to you to bring. Usually you don't need full on riding gear but you will NEED thick textile clothing that covers ALL exposed skin. I recommend you just go ahead and buy all the gear you plan to ride in ahead of time and wear that, especially gloves. If you can't afford to buy all your gear beforehand then a hoodie/thick long sleeve shirt, jeans, leather or thick textile (FULL FINGER) gloves, and shoes/boots that cover your ankle are the best route to go. When you sign up for the course you should receive the rules on what gear you need to be wearing so make sure to read through everything they give you before taking the course (something you should be doing anyway).

The one person that blew my mind in the class I was in was a lady (late 30s early 40s) showed up in full gear, talking about how she already bought her bike and couldn't wait to get her endorsement. 2 hours later she dropped out and decided motorcycling wasn't for her. We were all dumbfounded that she went and dropped at least a grand on gear (jacket, pants, boots, helmet, gloves, etc), spend who knows how much on a motorcycle, plus the MSF itself only to throw in the towel.

Indian Scout Bobber rider from France here, and I fully understand why we have A1/A2 system. The Scout Bobber for instance is already a very torquey motorcycle and can accelerate ridiculously fast even when A2 capped at 47,5HP (the torque is not capped so it's still 97Nm even when A2 capped). It's way more than enough to gather riding experience safely over 2 years, before unlocking the full power of your motorcycle.

I worked for one. I HIGHLY recommend using the school's bikes, instead of your own. Feel free to ride your bike up there, but unless you feel extremely confident in your low speed/tight turn radius ( like the dreaded "box") use the school's bikes. cause you wont be charged, if you drop it. And your bike stays intact. ( plus, if your bike is mechanically a mess, you can't use it for class anyways.)

I… dropped the bike in my MSF. I almost hurt my wrist (two months of pain I felt). There are things that newer riders will have to overcome, leaning is probably the most common. To this day I still have to tell myself to commit and lean but surprisingly I rarely have to. Also bring water, while my MSF instructor had a case during my second course I’ve taken you had to bring your own. We did a group ride to Applebee’s after and our table had piles of drinks because of how thirsty we were. Hydrate.

I had a really hard time with the figure 8 and the cone weaving. Ironically I had the most confident and extreme lean in the class. Came naturally to me. The rest didn’t, at all. I have extreme nerve damage in my hands so I couldn’t tell how hard I was grabbing the clutch. No lie, I stalled thirteen times during the test, all during takeoffs to start the sections because I couldn’t feel my grip. Knowing I’d fail I just chugged through and waited for the verdict, knowing I’d be the only one to fail. Don’t know if the dude took pity on me or something, but they passed me despite stalling an insane number of times. Bought my 2022 KLR650 within the same week and I now have 6300 miles on my bike. I took the course in February this year. My clutch pull is muscle memory now.
