Taking your own body measurements at home can be challenging, and I show how to go about doing so in this video.

A couple of other points to measure. Your under cup, from your nipple to where your bra band sits. Since breast are different in shapes and size, you might not sit comfortably in the cup for say a halter top style. Commercial patterns use a 3.5 inch measurement in their patterns. Also take a sit down measurement of your hips. To be blunt (and personal experience) fat spreads. Your sit down measurement might be more than the 1 inch ease that a pattern calls for. Another place to measure so that the back will fit more comfortably is across the back, right under the arm pit. Think of where your side seam would be and measure from side to side. These are some of my adjustments that I have to make as being a plus size person,

I've always had trouble with what people took as the hipline because and I didn't know if (you create an imagined curve between the two widest points and take that- I have that dip at the hip joint ) OR it'd be your upper hips and belly/abdomen OR lower hips including butt. Thank you!

Good tip with the mirror! I've had to do without a full length mirror for several years, so that's a habit I never picked up... I should remember to do that next time. :-) As a longer-torsoed larger-busted woman, I frequently use my back length and / or side seam length in addition to these - it's a usual alteration I have to make for patterns, and measuring just over the bust would not be enough to ensure a good fit. I usually have to do a full bust adjustment. Oh, and bicep and wrist/hand circumference, for sleeves!

when taking our measurements for our blocks, should we still add in the ease you were talking about (ie make sure a finger can fit between tape and body/do the sit test) or should we measure it exactly?

Hello Kim, I'm from Australia, I love your work and aspire to be as good as you. I've been sewing for almost 2 years now and still have difficulties in transferring measurements onto fabric. I've tried to follow on specific patterns with a few of your tutorials however I am still quite confused. Is there a particular method in this process and if so are you able to give me some insight please. It would help me so much, Thank you :)
@KimDave
@KimDave 4 жыл бұрын
Do you work straight onto fabric? Do you make patterns? Or drape on the mannequin? Whichever method you use, you can always double check the measurements you're working with as you plan, cut and sew.

Where would you buy sewing machine oil? Also do they have for a certain type of machine. Like if u have a brother sewing machine would you have to buy a certain one for it. Or can you just buy any. Do you have to buy a spacific one. Plz could you reply back
@KimDave
@KimDave 4 жыл бұрын
I’ve never had to buy sewing machine oil. I served my sewing machine last in 2017 and I’ve not had to oil my machine since then. So I don’t have an answer for your question unfortunately

I think you just have to stick to sewing machine oil and not other kinds of oils, but machine make should not make a difference.

I have an unusual question, I hope you are comfortable and able to answer. I don't have nipples. I'm not sure where nipples would have naturally sat on my chest. For measurements that require a "nipple point" what would be the best way for me to take those measurements? (Also if it matters I am male and don't have breasts either.)
