This is one of my favorite scenes, second only to the part near the end of the film when Christine and Erik sing together. When Erik sings Christine to sleep, it's just so sweet and touching. And a scene straight out of the original novel, as well. I don't think I can say this enough: I LOVE THIS PHANTOM.

I absolutely adore this version of Phantom of the Opera. It is my all time favorite musical and even though this adaptation isn't formatted as a musical, I still love it. Perhaps even more so because we are moved by these characters without constant emotional music. And Charles Dance is a brilliant Erik. I love the humor and warmth he brought to the role. He is more understanding and so tender with Christine.

The song he sings at 8:10 has been stuck in my head since I first saw this made for tv movie. I was 9 when I saw it and have since hummed this tune, but now that I am 29 I could not remember where it came from. Then I started watching this movie and there it was the tune that has been in my head for 20 years. Charles dance is a fabulous phantom with wonderful eyes and voice.

In this version, Carriere is kind of Eric's "attaché" - who knows who he is an knows what's going on. They're actually pretty chummy, like at the beginning Carriere chides Eric about Joseph Buquet's murder, at least compared Madame Giri in the 2004 version, who is usually the one who brings his notes to the others and was the one who brought him to the Opera House in the first place, and she appreciates who he is and why he is that way, but they don't really talk.

Sorry to disappoint you, PhantomInTraining. It is not Charles Dance who is singing in this movie (but maybe you have already discovered from other Comments that it is Gérard Garino). I have only heard Charles Dance sing once - in 'The Jewel in the Crown (1984)' and he has a different timbre. (Highly recommended series, btw.)

Hi! I think it is a French folk song called "Le Dix d"Avril." I am convinced that "My Star" from Final Fantasy 16 is also based on this anonymous song! They even have an English translation of the song on KZbin! Interestingly, the woman referenced in "Le dix d"avril" had blonde hair, and as far as I know, this is the only movie version of Phantom of the Opera where Christine had blonde hair, like in the original novel! This version of Phantom of the Opera will always be my favorite, because Charles Dance Erik was such a good person! Take care. I think this is the first version where Christine would be justified in choosing the Phantom over Raoul/Phillipe. Phillipe is nothing like the way Raoul is in the other version (except for being a prissy boy, sorry Raoul lovers ) and is a player. This is also the first version where I actually want to physically murder Carlotta, usually I can stomach her.
