I feel like the 17 lvl monk feature is more oriented towards setting the creature up for a big hit from a teammate instead of increasing your personal damage.

Yeah, make it vulnerable to radiant damage is nasty for setting up your Paladin.
@jothrax4673
@jothrax4673 9 ай бұрын
Yeah that is clearly the design intent. I'm kinda surprised they viewed setting up your teammate as the secondary feature here. There are so few teamwork abilities in D&D and this is a really nice one at a level where your party members can absolutely capitalize on it.

I looked at it similarly to the Grave Cleric Channel divinity, to set it up for your big hitters next attack. Granted, it being 17th level is pretty high
@jothrax4673
@jothrax4673 9 ай бұрын
@@IMXLegedaryBard The tradeoff is it's 3 Ki (that's nothing to a lv 17 monk), you can just do it as part of an attack, and you can more reliability set up a specific move vs Path to the Grave which is an action, Channel Divinity, and could get wasted on a weak attack unless you try to release it as a reaction. I do agree 17th level is really high. Maybe it'd be better at level 11.
@IMXLegedaryBard
@IMXLegedaryBard 9 ай бұрын
@jothrax4673 yeah I'm not saying the cost of it is bad, I like this ability a lot. It's just, as you pointed out also, it's still 17th level. I (for once in my life!!!!) Just finished a campaign, and we hit 11th level. So it's a great ability, it's just a high one that the player playing may not see

A note regarding the Open Sea's Channel Divinity: "You and each creature within 5 feet of you instead treat the area as lightly obscured." It's not that the area around the paladin is lightly obscured, it's that anyone within 5 feet of them TREATS the whole fog as lightly obscured, allowing them to target through the fog, but not be targeted themselves. They would still have disadvantage on Perception checks, but a wizard, rogue, or ranger standing right next to the paladin would be able to target enemies without issue, even so far as having advantage since they can't be seen. Much more effective then what was described. EDIT: Monty later saying "The version of this that you want is 'You can see in the mist, but your enemies can't'" makes this even better!

I agree, I'm playing the subclass in a campaign at the moment and my DM rules it exactly this way. It is really powerful and fun. However, it does have an interesting quirk in that you can end up with the party all bunched together to get the benefit making them susceptible to some AOE affects. I like this though as it means you have to think a bit tactically about when you make use of it.
@nickschile4807
@nickschile4807 9 ай бұрын
@@mike27011 Very true. This would pair really well with someone with blindsight who could move around the fog, or if an enemy mage is within 60 feet, someone with Counterspell, since they could not be Countersplled back.

Aaand since the vision inside the fog appiles to all creatures and not friendlies only, it means this paladin kinda should try and keep enemies at a distance, synergising really well with PAM+Sentinel combo. There's enough cheese (Monthy's terms 😂) with this Oath.

Not to be a Golden Mean guy but I doubt it's broken or trash. Even if it is Trash, 5e is super easy and basically anything you build at least half-way competently will be at the very least fun. I've only ever had one character actually die, and that was when I was being *way* too cocky with a wild magic halfling sorcerer at more or less the *front line* in a 2 player 1 DM one shot. He did take out a few horrible nightmare monsters before being BRUTALLY pecked to death.

I wish the monk’s 17th level ability gave you the option to spend additional ki points on stunning strike to make it paralyze a creature instead of stunning it. You get automatic crits which basically double your damage anyway, but it also gives you the benefits of stunning strike.

Slight CR Spoiler: Interestingly, while you focused on the level 17 Cobalt Soul monk ability being used on your own bludgeoning damage, the times I've seen it used (in CR) was to set up the level 17+ wizard/casters for a big hit with different damage types.

Just a reminder about the Channel Divinity Ability of the Open Sea Paladin (17:40) that i felt the need for correction, the fog is not lightly obscured only in the paladin space and 5 ft space of them, but in reality, the paladin and every single creature within 5 feet count the entire fog area as lighty obscured instead of heavily obscured. So, in reality, thats a built in Darkness spell (more like a fog cloud) with Devil Sight kind of thing, that you can share with your allies! But if a enemy get to 5 feet of you, it also gets the benefits. If used correctly, you can have free advantage against your enemies with reach weapons like glaives or halberds, while not being able to be targered by a lot of spells. You could also use it and have a ranged character by your side having free advantage against enemies that can't see them. It's a really strong Channel Divinity ability, but it may be tricky to manage in the battlefield!
@TheHandgunhero
@TheHandgunhero 9 ай бұрын
Paladins are always going to get within 5 feet of their foes, they're a melee martial character. Your allies don't want to be that close however and thus can't see who you're fighting and you're just hindering them. It's not that good.
@natang.delyra9583
@natang.delyra9583 9 ай бұрын
@@TheHandgunhero Paladins could use reach weapons for the free advantage, but i do agree that is very difficult to manage the fog with spellcaster allies for example, as wizards and sorcerers probably dont want to be in the heat of the fight but instead far away from it. But again, is basically a pseudo devil sight darkness combo that do not use concentration. I just thought how that ability would work mounted on a steed from the Find Steed spell, and allies mounted with you on the steed, i guess i gotta see some other perspectives on that!
@TheHandgunhero
@TheHandgunhero 9 ай бұрын
@natang.delyra9583 The ability doesn't work with reach weapons because you have to be within 5 feet of the target to see them, unless you're taking the blind fighting fighting style in which case it's a decent option (but still very janky).
@natang.delyra9583
@natang.delyra9583 9 ай бұрын
@@TheHandgunhero Hmm, here's the ability: "As an action, you channel the sea to create a thick cloud of fog that surrounds you for 20 feet in all directions. The fog moves with you, remaining centered on you and making its area heavily obscured. You and each creature within 5 feet of you instead treat the area as lightly obscured.", for my reading the paladin and any creature within 5 feet of the paladin treat the fog as lightly obscured, wich means you (and any creature within 5 feet of you) can see in the area. But i and other folk that reads that way like Pack Tacticks and Treantmonk could be wrong, in that case, there's the need for the blinding fighting style, even though i'm confident about my reading. But it's ok, every table reads differently a lot of abilities, what makes dnd even more diverse and somewhat fun!
@TheHandgunhero
@TheHandgunhero 9 ай бұрын
@natang.delyra9583 You would need the Blind Fighting fighting style to take advantage of a reach weapon to get advantage as an unseen attacker was my point. Otherwise at 10 feet you can't see one another and thus nobody has advantage, and within 5 feet of each other you can see each other and thus nobody has advantage. All the channel divinity ends up doing is causing the rest of your party to not be able to see the threats to target them leaving you to duke it out alone. It's not a good ability.

I actually played a character named Mannas- a triton oath of the open sea paladin (hexblade paladin, but still) when the book first dropped and it was as flavorful as advertised. Marine layer is weirdly powerful, and fury of the tides works much better when your main stat is charisma thanks to the hexblade dip. Also the free push from fury of the tides naturally makes you want a blender ally of some kind, i.e someone who can cast spike growth or something like that and once they do, it's pretty easy to get some absurd damage levels going.

I know that you guys don't take flavor text/RP into consideration with the rankings, but I did enjoy you adding a generic class fantasy bit at the beginnings of the subclasses in your earlier videos. Just seems like you're jumping right into features on these. For instance without any context on the Cobalt Soul fantasy (not that players have to stick to what's written) Mystical Erudition seems extremely out of place and random. Generally speaking, those are the monks that find or guard knowledge vs a monk training in a dojo or living as a hermit. Just a bit of feedback from the last couple videos.

I have a buddy playing an Oath of an Open Sea Paladin in my current campaign. The Marine Layer channel ability won us a fight against a Sea Hag. The hag couldn't see anyone or any points on the battle field, so she couldn't cast spells at all. She still had a melee attack, but we could hit harder than she could. The Druid restrained here with Entangle (which doesn't require line of sight to cast), so she couldn't move to attack on her turn. As long as the Paladin backed away from her in between hits, she was totally blind. Fight lasted two and half rounds.

When they were talking about monks gaining new features that drain their limited ki points, I was thinking a way to achieve that would be to add features that trigger off spending ki points on existing features. Then when they got to the sorcerer, it was exactly what I was picturing. They fill runes by spending sorcery points, then they get to spend the runes. That type of design could help give monk subclasses more resources without ignoring the limited ki point pool.

Crazy thing about extort truth is that you can continue to spend ki points if a creature succeeds on saving throw until it fails (if you have enough ki points). So fun watching Marisha use that ability in the Mighty Nein... As a monk you can build it with high AC to tank, but you're better off using your multi attacks, and then disengage with step of the wind ability to use the monk's greater mobility to get away. again, you can use patient defence to to basicaly have dodge action, so gives disadvantage, so you can tank if AC is high, but Yeah. again, Ray's character had pretty high AC as far as I could tell in that campaign. I don't think the "line of sight" is an issue for paaladin, since, since you are a smasher/slasher/piercer, you want to be hiden from caster/ranged types that deal damage, and be able to hit (without disaadvantage) the ones you're about to use your divine smite on. So, I think its well thought out that sttorm thing. as for the new Paladin class, interesting for sea based campaign, but not sure. I gues you could have a back story of somebody who was a sailor (or even pirate) and then became a paladin. I tend to prefer either a vengeance or redemption paladin. NOt sure if this is a good idea, but one thing I would have done with this class is allow to add divine smite on spells that damage from the added spell list (like, call lightning + Smite! THa may make it a bit better. SO, in this case, Call lightning or the new spells could do damage and add the smite damage to it in that way, it could be something to add motivation to use the new spells over just hitting with a weapon and using spell slots for divine smite. In a pirate campaign, this could be a good pirate hunger for the DM to use. I LOVE RUNECHILD! With some classes, I tend to horde abilities and spells (Like if I'm ina dungeon where I know we won't have a long rest, I tend to end up with way too many unused spells and metamagic points, but this encourages me to use them. I loved using animate object for this class. Good list. and with the glyph of aegies v/ shield or siilvery barbs is that, if your AC with mage armor is 15, you use shield, and the hit is a 20 or higher, you wasted a spell slot and still took damage. Silvery barbs, well, you force to rerool, and they could still hit you with a new roll. WIth this, you take damage, and at least you reduce it. I like the ability to reveal the magic stuff in a room, so, yeah, its nice. The fact you get advantage in checks,a nd understand the language is also useful. Somebody who knows how to do this properly (like the dungeon dudes) needs to make a class like this: a Paladin with the blood domain features? I think that'd be a cooler pali class.

Definitely want to see Grim Hollows subclasses and the ones for Drakkenhiem. Dr Drholins guide to dinosaurs was a Kickstarter and they designed some sub classes. Deep Magic vol 1 and 2 I believe also had some sub classes from Kobold Press.

I'm playing a Runechild right now and it's really fun. The Glyph of Aegis is way better than the Clockwork Soul feature that does something similar. Instead of spending Sorcery Points to reduce damage, you spend them as usual and use the charged runes instead

The general concept of getting power by doing things you were doing anyway is currently one of the design mechanics of the MCDM game in development. I like things that discourage resting to keep the group pushing forward.

I feel like it would be a cool ability for a blood magic wizard to be able to use spells from other spell lists, maybe a limited number of times per day and you take damage that adjusts depending on the level of the spell.

Kobold Press does amazing stuff. Check out Tome of Heroes... it's basically PHB2. I've taken a lot of stuff from them, between races, backgrounds, and subclasses... as well as, in the new year, making clockwork kestrel familiars for my party to give them magic resistance... the only problem is that they don't have an Artificer or any Artificer related stuff... in ToH at least.

I think if the monk used the Sorcerer mechanic of having a power fueled by spending Ki that would be near perfect. And I'd love to see the Dudes look at Chamomile's classes (Chamomile's Guide to Everything, but that's a collection of a dozen smaller books).

one thing to point out is that the glyph of hemorrhaging can buff any other characters attacks! so if a monk or fighter attack the target afterwards that is a lot!

Idk if it is that popular but Crystalpunk is a book made a year or so ago that has at least 1 new subclass per class iirc. Could be an interesting review.

It would be thematic and cool to allow a blood magic wizard to spend hit points to cast a spell, maybe roll a d6 for every level of spell slot. So a wizard could roll 3d6 to cast a 3rd level spell without using a slot, high level spells at low levels are expensive but thematic.

Elven Rune Child Sorcerer. Rest 4 hours, expend most sorcery points to charge your runes. Short Rest to regain all sorcery points before the rest of your party wakes up, and still have time to take a watch.

25:00 okay I gotta assist Kelly on this one. Currently playing a harengon pirate paladin of the open sea with a multi to swords bard. As someone that lives battlefield control, fury of the waves is amazing plus the anti grapple aura has been more than useful. What am I going to do in a dungeon Monty? Ever fight a roper that can't grapple you or the barbarian/druid? And call lighting has been my go to for flying creatures and elevated combatants.

@@thornelson1411Ghostslayer is solid damage and increased utility and control. Lycan is very hard to build for and comes at significant costs regardless of what you do: full DEX can make medium armor feel like a waste, your advantage on Strength checks and saves isn't amazing since you suck at those anyway; while STR is heavy because you need 14 DEX for medium armor and multiclassing is iffy, having heavy armor wastes your +1 AC, and you'll struggle to get ASIs on anything that isn't a human due to the high costs for PAM/GWM. Lycan also tends to have problems with Bonus Action clog. The blood curses themselves need some love, but spreading out your INT feels bad since it touches on a lot of abilities, so it's very hard to accept being MAD at all.

@@AnaseSkyrider true we do see the bonus action clog often with Chet. Also I witnessed it myself with my player who did a Fighter/BH lycan multiclass.

@@thornelson1411 Going wolf in an encounter is highly cinematic but the 1 hour duration, short rest recovery, and needing a separate bonus action (and more self-damage) for activating Crimson Rite on your Predatory Strikes means it's something you should do before a combat you can see coming breaks out. And to expand on racial selections, I mentioned that variant human makes building (especially for STR Lycan) with feats and scores a lot easier. But by extension, it's also a tax on other interesting abilities. I love the idea of a Shifter Lycan Blood Hunter for a handful of reasons (and have played it straight-classed at mid levels for a few sessions), but the bonus action is a problem. Basically any race that has interesting abilities of this kind will not be nice to the Lycan.
