Recently started learning about and creating chiptune, and it's mind-blowing and such a credit to the composer that four channels with such a limited sound palette had and can have such an emotional impact on us even after all these years. The limitations of these systems just forced incredible writing.
@thatonehumanoid77562 жыл бұрын
Given channel 4 is just a noise channel, it’s more like three, I compose on this thing a lot and you can very rarely use the noise channel for anything useful aside from maracas SOMETIMES.
@LordIronfist Жыл бұрын
I was just about to look up how many channels they had access to on the original Gameboy (I didn't trust my hearing to be accurate though I was counting 4) it's just mind blowing what they were able to get out of that few. Though...I guess most bands are 4 channels at the base level, but still, there's a reason orchestral walls of sound usually outplay 3 instruments and a singer
@LordIronfist Жыл бұрын
@@thatonehumanoid7756 channel 4 is that triangle ding in the outro/restart setup part, I assume?
@thatonehumanoid7756 Жыл бұрын
@@LordIronfist No, it’s a little hard to explain but a noise channel basically can only make one sound at one pitch, and that sound is like the TV static sound. That like crunchy “schk” sound links sword makes when you swing it is the noise channel, but it’s basically useless for anything else. If you’re really really good with composing you could try to use it to make some kind of maracas sound or add a bit of emphasis to certain other notes but regardless it’s definitely not as useful as a full on wave channel.
@thatonehumanoid7756 Жыл бұрын
By modern, and when I say modern I mean 1995 or so, standards, the game boy only has one real channel. There is one wave channel that can play eight bit synth samples, Which is usually used for percussion but is also used for a few other things. You can’t put really fancy samples like violin or piano noises there because the quality of the sound you can store in that channel is ridiculously low. The two channels that are most used are both pulse channels. Pulse channels can play any note, however the only “instrument” they can use is the beeping sound the game boy you can make. So you have two channels that can only use one beeping sound, one channel they can use theoretically anything but at an extremely low quality, and one channel that literally only makes TV static. The upside is that on a budget it’s very easy to start composing on a game boy because the fact that you don’t need any samples or instrumentation for 90% of the noises it could make means that the only hardware you need to compose with it is the game by itself. The downside is everything else.

This was my first Zelda, and so it has a huge place in my heart. It's actually amazing how short the game is when you know what you're doing, but also incredible how much content Nintendo was able to stuff into an 512-kilobyte cartridge. Eight full dungeons (+1 color version) and an entire island to explore (even if many elements were directly reused from Link to the Past).

I've never been the biggest fan of top-down Zelda. I mildly enjoyed A Link to the Past, but despite everyone's overblown praise of it, my enjoyment never rose above a 7. Link's Awakening, on the other hand, clicked with me like no other top-down Zelda has so far. The unique arrangements of familiar tunes, the variety of enemies and bosses, the introduction of mid-bosses, the memorable cast, a setting that's not Hyrule for a change, the profound fable-like story, it has it all. Just enough returning elements to make it distinctly Zelda, and a whole lot of new, original, and never-again-seen elements to make it fresh for newcomers, die-hard fans, and even those with franchise fatigue. I look forward to the day we get a new Zelda game set outside of Hyrule again, with all new species, SOME returning ones, and some experimental mechanics and features. While some of my favourite games are set in Hyrule, part of what makes an adventure enjoyable is seeing NEW places,, NEW friendly and enemy species, a NEW villain, rather than the same ones rehashed with a different coat of paint. That's one of Link's Awakening's greatest strengths, and I think the next mainline Zelda after Echoes of Wisdom is in desperate need of a new setting. Look how it worked out for Mario Odyssey and Wonder.

Feels totally different IMO, the limited sounds of the Gameboy really made the composer get really creative, it this song has this totally awesome sound to it that the remake really completely lacks. Also the remake version kind of lacks any sort of drop whatsoever which is a damn shame(there is a drop of course, but it's just very weak IMO).
