For the last episode of Talakayan, Gary C. Devilles, PhD, Jethro P. Tenorio, and Andrea I. Anne Trinidad explore the complex challenges faced by educators of the Filipino language amidst pressing issues of historical revisionism and denialism, including the surge of misinformation. They discuss how language is affected by prevailing ideologies and how it can be utilized to unite or divide a nation.
About the Panelists
Gary C. Devilles, PhD is an associate professor of the Filipino Department of Ateneo de Manila University. He is the author of Sensing Manila, published by Ateneo University Press, which won the Best Book in Literary Criticism in the 39th National Book Awards. He is also the author of Pasakalye: Isang Paglalayag sa Kasaysayang ng Panitikang Filipino and co-editor of Roland Tolentino in Kritikal na Espasyo ng Kulturang Popular, both published by Ateneo University Press.
He took up AB Philosophy and MA in Filipino Literature in Ateneo de Manila University and his PhD in Media Studies in La Trobe University, Australia. Gary is the chair of Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, a 45 year-old film critics group that gives the annual Gawad Urian.
Assistant Professor si Jethro P. Tenorio sa Kagawaran ng Filipino ng Mga Paaralang Loyola ng Pamantasang Ateneo de Manila. Nagtapos siya ng kursong AB Communication at MA Literature (Filipino) mula sa Ateneo. Nagtuturo siya ng panitikan, retorika, at kulturang popular. Naging visiting faculty rin siya sa Peking University, Beijing noong 2019 at 2022, at nagturo ng Wika at Kulturang Filipino sa mga estudyanteng Tsino. Tuon ng kanyang mga pag-aaral ang Dulang Filipino at Mga Araling Pagtatanghal. Aktor at direktor din siya para sa mga grupong Ateneo-ENTABLADO at ADHD Productions. Tuwing Miyerkules nang alas onse ng umaga ay mapapanood at mapapakinggan siya bilang host sa programang "Sari-Sari" ng Radyo Katipunan at Kagawaran ng Filipino, na tumatalakay sa anumang paksang may kinalaman sa pagtuturo at pagbabasa ng panitikan at kulturang popular ng Pilipinas.
Andrea Anne I. Trinidad currently teaches courses in Literature and Popular Culture as an Instructor in the Department of Filipino, School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University where she also obtained her AB-MA Filipino Literature degree. She researches Filipino Fan Studies and Popular Romance. Her work has been published in Katipunan: Journal ng mga Wika, Panitikan, Sining at Kulturang Filipino, Participations:Journal of Audience and Reception Studies, and Plaridel Journal of Communication, Media, and Society. She has also contributed to The Routledge Companion to Romantic Love (Routledge, 2022). In June 2023, her collaborative publication entitled Publishing Romance Fiction in the Philippines is expected to be released under the Elements in Publishing and Book Culture of Cambridge University Press.
