What ails social media these days? In this episode of Talakayan, Dennis Temporal, Dr. Remmon Barbaza, and Dr. Oscar Bulaong, Jr., exchange views on ethics and morality as it applies to social media interactions.

Dennis Temporal is a lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University with assignments from the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Communication, and the Graduate School of Business. His main research interests are in Modern Philosophy, Ethics, the Philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Bernard Lonergan.
He acquired a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a master’s degree in Philosophy from Ateneo, and holds a PhD Candidacy in Philosophy.
Dennis is also a management consultant who specializes in designing and conducting learning programs for corporate training.

Dr. Oscar Bulaong, Jr. is Executive Director of the Gov. Jose B. Fernandez Jr. Ethics Center at the Graduate School of Business of the Ateneo de Manila University, where he teaches leadership and business ethics. He is also a Lecturer at the Philosophy Department of the Ateneo de Manila Loyola Schools and the Ateneo School of Government, as well as at the Graduate School of Business of San Beda University. He received his bachelor’s (BS Management, 1997) and master’s (MA in Philosophy, 2001) degrees from the Ateneo de Manila. He earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy (2009) at the Institut für Philosophie of the Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Universität in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

He has lectured on the ethics of corporate culture to businessmen and business teachers for a variety of companies and universities in the major cities around the Philippines. Among his publications, he edited the anthology Business Ethics in Asia (2014), which was a Finalist in the Professions category of the 34th National Book Awards of the National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC). He is currently doing research on corporate governance reports of publicly listed companies in the Philippines as well as on an anthropological approach to understanding Filipino ethical decision-making.

Dr. Remmon E. Barbaza is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he served as chair of the Department of Philosophy and as the acting dean of the School of Humanities. He earned a BA in Linguistics from the University of the Philippines-Diliman in 1988, an MA in Philosophy from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1994, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Hochschule für Philosophie-München (Munich School of Philosophy) in 2002, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gerd Haeffner, S.J. His dissertation, Heidegger and a New Possibility of Dwelling, was published in 2003 (Frankfurt: Peter Lang). His research interests include Heidegger, technology, language, the city, environment, and translation. His essay, “There Where Nothing Happens: The Poetry of Space in Heidegger and Arellano,” appears as a chapter in the second edition of Heidegger and the Earth: Essays in Environmental Philosophy (University of Toronto Press, 2009). He edited the book, Making Sense of the City: Public Spaces in the Philippines (Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2019). His essay, "The Boat Will Rise, Too: On the Necessity, Allure, and Terror of Water." will appear in 2022 as a chapter in the anthology, Coastal Urbanities: Mobilities, Meanings, Manoeuvrings, to be published by Brill in Leiden. He likewise engages the wider public through commentaries in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. An avid cyclist, he also engages in photography, calligraphy, scuba diving, and aikido, all of which flow from and back into his intellectual life.

Talakayan is a series which presents how scholarship merges with practice by highlighting innovations, creative solutions, or responses to the complexities, ambiguities, and vulnerabilities we collectively face today.
