In this episode of Talakayan, Devi Benedicte I. Paez, Cecilia A. Suarez, PhD, and Marianne Rachel G. Perfecto, D.A. discuss purposeful ways of teaching the English language in order to enhance the knowledge, competency, and proficiency of Filipino students. As educators, they explore various approaches on how to raise the local schools’ literacy level given the context of our contemporary learning environment, so that students can participate globally in a more competitive, competent, confident, and beneficial manner.
Devi Benedicte I. Paez is a faculty of the English Department, Loyola Schools, Ateneo de Manila University. She is also a senior facilitator with the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT), having developed and conducted workshops on teaching literature and teaching English in multilingual settings. Devi has presented in local and international conferences and published studies on teaching and learning English in the Mother Tongues, literature and language teaching in multilingual settings, and teacher development.
Cecilia A. Suarez, PhD teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at the Department of English, Ateneo de Manila University. She is the Executive Director of the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT) where she is also a Senior Trainer. She is a National Trainer and a Training Consultant for the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and a Master Trainer and Training Consultant for the British Council. As a trainer, she has developed and conducted training programs and workshops for teachers, academic supervisors, and other professionals from national and international communities.
She earned her PhD in Education, Major in Language Education from the University of the Philippines Diliman and her MA in English Language and Literature Teaching from the Ateneo de Manila University. She has authored and co-authored a number of books for basic education and tertiary levels. Her research interests include multilingualism and multilingual education, translingual practices, teacher training, materials development, assessment and evaluation, among others.
Marianne Rachel G. Perfecto, D.A. is Associate Professor at the Ateneo de Manila University. As a teacher trainer and educator, she has worked with secondary and tertiary teachers in the country and the region in the areas of materials and curriculum development, and language and literature teaching. She served as Chair of the English Department of ADMU, and as Executive Director of the Ateneo Center for English Language Teaching (ACELT). She was also one of the Consultants of CHED for the GE course, Purposive Communication, and is one of the authors of the Ateneo published textbook on Purposive Communication. Her research and publication focus on teacher cognition, reading & writing, multilingual education, and translanguaging in English language teaching.
Talakayan is a series which presents how scholarship merges with practice by highlighting innovations, creative solutions, or responses to the complexities, ambiguities, and vulnerabilities we collectively face today. Really appreciate this 'Talakayan'. Shared this to my students (language teachers) who are so far until now, they have this monolithic perspective- EOP in teaching English. Am one of those teachers who is also an advocate of multilingualism.
