"The Last Car" is based on John B. Rosenman's short story but is different in many ways. In the original story, Stacey's internal monologue reveals her feelings of isolation and fear as she grapples with the idea of death, providing a richer emotional context. The story also includes detailed descriptions of the train's eerie atmosphere and the peculiar behavior of its passengers, such as a man who seems to know too much about Stacey's life. These elements build tension and suspense throughout her journey. In contrast, the episode condenses these aspects for pacing, focusing more on her interactions with other characters rather than her inner thoughts. While the short story concludes with Stacey coming to terms with her impending death and accepting her fate, the episode ends ambiguously, leaving viewers uncertain about whether she has truly died or is trapped in a limbo. Overall, both versions explore themes of mortality and the unknown, but the adaptation offers a more streamlined and visually driven experience that sacrifices some depth for suspense.

you should check out the Christmas episode, Seasons of Belief, from Tales from the Darkside. That episode lives rent free in my head every Christmas since I saw it as a kid.

Tales from the Darkside was a cool little show that was able to do a lot with a very limited budget. It was more horror oriented than the Twilight Zone but had its own memorable episodes including this one.

If you want a show that was taken off the air because an episode was so scary, it's Fear Itself "Skin and Bones". I've literally watched about every horror movie ever made and this is it. It's hands down the performance of Doug Jones that brings it to that level. If u watch it, remember this was on network TV. lol

Michael McDowell is best known for writing Beetlejuice, and his novels and short stories are well-respected, but yeah, I think the low budget for the episodes limited their options for what they can and can't adapt and probably reads better in a few pages than stretched out with actors over 20 minutes. I do recommend the horror movie Cold Moon, based on McDowell's novel Cold Moon Over Babylon, it's a better testament to what McDowell is at straight horror.

Just a suggestion for another Tales From the Darkside. Season 3 episode 13 "The Milkman Cometh" don't look up the tv preview of the episode cause it completely spoiled the ending. Also, I just wanted to say Happy Thanksgiving, guys.

This show always seemed very weak back when it was airing. There were a handful of shows airing in First Run Syndication before TNG blew the doors open. Most of these shows had extremely limited budgets and looked like it. They almost always had tiny electronic scores and sounded like they came out of Casio keyboard. There was a fear from the Star Trek fans that this would be the kind of thing that would hamper TNG when they learned it was going to premiere on syndication.

What aggravated me about this is obviously weird shit is going on but the woman doesn't comment on it. I'd be freaking out. What's the woman's like oh tunnel okay. Kid magically changes clothes okay. I can't get out of the train car okay ECT ECT Come on woman have some reaction
