tales from the DSM creator let me know SPD is supposed to be schizoid personality disorder, however that doesn't change the fact that it's offensive, and also technically SZPD is what the disorder's acronym is supposed to be.

Thank you for correcting yourself! I'm sure that the reason you couldn't find much information on schizoid pd is because of the lack of awareness of its existence and what it means. And many people use SPD as the acronym which is why things can get confusing sometimes :)

As a person with aspd I’m glad you actually talked about how everyone stereotypes us as villains or along the lines of that. When in fact not all of us will kill someone. Aspd (one of the most common symptoms) Is not feeling empathy/sympathy. Just because most of us don’t feel that doesn’t mean we’re going to kill someone. That can impact someone’s mental health even more even if you don’t realize it. It’s very harmful so I’m glad you talked about that fact.
@acreforrest

I also have aspd (as well as asd) and definitely would never hurt anyone!! in fact i barely talk other than to a few select people,, but when i do i try to be as nice as possible? I 100% struggle with empathy, but i'm not about to kill someone! ever! I'm more of the quiet anxiety-ridden friend of the protagonist than the villain. It's like what people say about spiders, i'm probably more scared of you than you are of me-

I would like to add on to the whole “it’s just art” segment and bring up the example of the 2016 movie “Split” and how badly it effected the people who suffer from DID (or Dissociative Identity Disorder) which hurt a lot of people with the disorder. Not just with how hurt they were from how poorly they represented but also with how badly a lot of people seen and treated the them after the movie.

I was going to comment about the same thing. I hate when mental illness is stereotyped as such a violent thing when it isn’t. Even a lot of people with anger issues aren’t violent. When I saw the movie ‘Joker’ I remember hearing people around me whispering “What’s wrong with him?” and “What a psycho” in such a negative tone. When the movie is legit about someone who isn’t psychologically stable. They even explain in the movie why he has his symptoms. Mental illnesses are just so misunderstood and sadly a lot of people don’t care enough to learn..

Reminder that Neurodivergency is not limited to ASD and the adhd scale. People with Dyslexia and it’s other forms are also neurodivergent. From personal experience with a neurodivergent disorder (Tourette’s syndrome) people seem to only care about the ADHD scale and ASD and disregard someone who does not have them as ‘not really neurodivergent’. Please keep this in mind when talking about Neurological disorders! Great Video btw!

this is a great video, but i'd like to gently point out that "neurodivergent" can be applied to anyone with any mental disorder, not just add/adhd/autism (this is according to the person who coined the term!! neurodiverse is the term for people specifically with those disorders). this doesn't mean that anyone with any mental disorder can reclaim the r slur though, and thank you for the friggen education on it!! EDIT TO CLARIFY: "NEURODIVERSE" is the term for people with adhd, add, autism, etc. these people CAN reclaim the r slur "NEURODIVERGENT" was coined as a term for ANY MENTAL DISORDER (including those that are considered neurodiverse) and most neurodivergent folks CANNOT reclaim or use the r slur

My experience with sensory processing disorder is like... you dont *grow out* of it as much as you kinda get better at handling it as you age and learn more methods of coping. It's easier if you have support (from friends, family, therapists) and resources (assistive devices like headphones)
@sleepy-emerald
@sleepy-emerald 3 жыл бұрын
Right. I personally am one of those people who would like wireless headphones just so I can listen to music while walking through my school hallways because music is how I cope with the over sensitivity to sound. I keep teaching myself more ways to cope with sensory processing disorder, so now it’s not really much of a hindrance in my day-to-day life. The only times I may have some issue is at birthday parties, in the hallways of school, at restaurants, etc because in places where people are being overly loud it’s hard to ignore the noise and there are a lot of things I can’t eat purely because of the disorder. Same with me, My dad often used it as another word for "dumb", he likely wasn't trying to be ablist, he just wasn't aware it was a slur. I learned from the internet it was a slur so I cut it out of my vocabulary.

i have bpd, and thank you. so many people think we lack empathy and are mean people, and while the lack of empathy is relevant for a lot of people with bpd, it’s not true for all of us. some of us, like myself, are very highly empathetic and it’s sooooo nice to see someone standing up against stereotypes. we aren’t all extremely unstable messes who don’t feel things for anyone and who are desperate for attention. thank you.

(borderline) the last guy is brock. he’s an insurance agent with three kids and was diagnosed with npd. despite the stigma, he loves his wife and kids and does his best at everything he does. mental disorders are invisible, i bet without the descriptions you wouldn’t be able to guess that these people have mental disorders

I appreciate videos like these, not just because they help out people this type of bad representation could hurt, but it also helps people to look more critically at their own art and characters and ask, "Is this offensive? How can I make it better?" (I originally posted a whole section on a specific character I made up, but I got embarrassed quickly and deleted it) I have a character that has a complicated backstory and a power set and premise that needs to be handled delicately and your video made me think more critically about the way I wrote this character. Thank you for that.

Hey, this was a really good video. However, I'd like to correct you on on or two things. The r-slur was initially used to describe and later harass kids with down syndrome, that doesn't mean other neurodivergent individuals didn't get caught in it to, but it wasn't initially about us. On top of that neurodivergence does include things like dyslexia and borderline as well. Its a vast spectrum but someone living with a personality disorder would be described by some as neurodivergent. Still a great video though and all of your points still stand
@EmilyCorradino
@EmilyCorradino 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like something like this has incredible potential. Like, neurodivergent people have a horrendous track record of being stereotyped in media. A project like this would have had the potential to fight these stereotypes, rather than embrace them. For example, plenty of people with NPD and ASPD are aware of their issues, and are fantastic people in spite of their disorders. JCS did a fantastic video on NPD on his second channel, and I highly recommend it. It also would have been a fantastic opportunity to show how to handle people with these disorders. For example, I can't tell you how many pieces of media with autistic characters try to suggest that the best way to handle an outburst is to physically restrain them. A project like this would have had the potential to be educational too. Show how to PROPERLY handle stuff like that. I was also diagnosed with ADD as a kid, and my parents thought that keeping it a secret and putting me in normal classes with no extra help was the best solution. In their words, I'd sink or swim, and I'd force myself to adapt. When you're a parent of a neurodivergent child, you need to "buy in to the help" as I've heard it described. TL;DR - This could have been a fantastic way to fight stereotypes and be educational or helpful. Sorry if I didn't use the proper terminology at times.

As someone who could be categorized as a walking stereotype for BPD and Schizophrenia I felt disgusted to learn about these "gjinkas" (or however...) It was disheartening to say the least, since I'm trying hard to fight the stigma within my circle and myself, only to see all my traits portrayed between two characters. (Pretty sure the schizoid one was supposed to be paranoid or something, as it is one of the main symptoms of paranoid Schizophrenia, and even other types like childhood onset Schizophrenia, the one I have) Im glad you were able to correct yourself because I was pretty taken aback when you said "bipolar" instead of "borderline", it's all good tho!

Common misconception, but schizoid personality disorder isn't related to schizophrenia in any way. It usually leads to a detached, blunted personality. According to mayo clinic, here are several symptoms of SPD: Prefer being alone and choose to do activities alone Don't want or enjoy close relationships Feel little if any desire for sexual relationships Feel like you can't experience pleasure Have difficulty expressing emotions and reacting appropriately to situations May seem humorless, indifferent or emotionally cold to others May appear to lack motivation and goals Don't react to praise or critical remarks from others

I have ADHD, I first took the test when I was young (do not remember what age) and I recently took the adult ADHD test. I choose not to use retarded in my personal vocabulary book because it has been used as a slur. You did state only nerodivergent people can remain it and you are absolutely right! I just choose not to use it because it's been used in a bad way for so long. Just like racial slurs, I choose/literally refuse and cannot say racial slurs, only the other races the slurs are used against can say it. Again your video is educational and I'm glad I found your channel!

So, to clarify, ADD is not a recognized diagnosis anymore. It is grouped with ADHD. There are three forms: primarily hyperactive-impulsive, combined (symptoms of both hyperactivity and inattention), and primarily inattentive (formerly ADD). It's worth noting that inattentive presentations of ADHD can have hyperactivity, it is just more internalized as anxiety and racing thoughts.

The thing that frustrates me about this most of all is that people with personality disorders ARE trying to advocate for ourselves, as we tend to be left behind even amongst advocacy for neurodivergent people. Those of us doing that get very little notice while stuff that promotes stigma and stereotypes is where most people get information and form opinions about people with personality disorders. Most people just don't listen to us even though we are the experts on our neurodivergences by warrant of being the people who have actual lived experience with them. They'd rather characterize us as bad or incompetent people than listen to what we have to say about our own ND experience.

8:12 is absolutely incorrect- the original coiner of the term 'neurodivergent', Kassiane Sibley, has stated that the term applies to EVERYONE with a brain that works different from the norm. They specified "Autistic people. ADHD people. People with learning disabilities. Epileptic people. People with mental illnesses. People with MS or Parkinsons or apraxia or cerebral palsy or dyspraxia or no specific diagnosis but wonky lateralization or something...Neurodivergent refers to neurologically divergent from typical. That’s ALL." Just because someone is part of a community doesn't meant they can't spread misinformation and stigma around that community.
@staggbones
@staggbones 3 жыл бұрын
That's true, but there's a lot of debate on WHICH people in the neurodivergent community can use the slur, the widely regarded consensus is people with ADD-ADHD, autism, and tourettes (not trying to invalidate anyone else who have had the slur used against them though!! that's just what the community seems to agree on) since the slur is used against them most. It's a very touchy subject and a lot of people have different opinions on the subject.
@nos5915

Stereotypes about mental health (more specifically psychological disorders) can be quite confusing, for example the stereotype of people being geniuses because of their mental disorder. Problem being if people don’t get help, especially with more severe disorders like schizophrenia and OCD (I know it comes under anxiety disorders), they can find it harder to integrate themselves with the rest of society, which I know is obvious but it is thrown around enough to make it annoying. Autistic people are often at the butt end of this because people think they can think out of the box whereas in reality a lot of the people with autism are just regular people.
