Tales From the Loop - Character Creation & World Building

Welcome to the our character creation and world building episode for our upcoming Tales From the Loop roleplaying game. In this episode we'll introduce our players and their characters. We introduce and build our world, a fictionalized Boulder City, Nevada in the summer of 1986. Lastly we cover some basic mechanics for the game and get everything ready to begin our Tales From the Loop RPG campaign.

The atmosphere/music used during gameplay is provided by Syrinscape, a subscription based application with Sci-fi and Fantasy settings for any adventure.

One of the cool things about this game is that you can print a map of your hometown and make the loop there. I come from Ecuador, so I made the loop in the center of the planet made by the soviets in the 60's to compete against the Americans and Nato. The Russians already have one in the north and this in Ecuador was an experimental second loop. As it is in the center and not the north it created a catastrophe like Chernobyl. It is even more interesting when your pals reimagine a half empty city filled with weirdness.

It's super cool that this involves particle exceloraters and quantum mechanics. I'm reading Lawrence Krauss's book the greatest story ever told - so far. Which touches on our study of light and the quantum realm. I'm thinking about the history of it as you're describing this world.

I started a D&D group at the school that I teach at last year. I had a bit of issues with maturity when running my campaign, but I think this game might fix that. Being 20 hours in, would you recommend running this game with a group of 12-14 year olds? Lol

I've been having a lot of fun playing this game but there are some things that a player coming from dnd might have a hard time adjusting to. It's entirely a d6 game and the mechanics have a fail forward system that can make future checks harder unless they recuperate in a safe space like their hideout between scenes/adventuring. There's a lot of stuff like that that can be a big departure from traditional D&D. Tales From the Loop is wildly thematic so that was a huge draw for me (but that shouldn't come as a surprise to you haha). Feel free to hit me back with any specific questions you might have. First episode releases in a week if you wanted to checkout gameplay further but even that episode is a lot of character exploration in a new world. =D

You should try Mutants and Masterminds. Mechanics are somewhat similar to Dungeons and Dragons.

I would suggest Dungeon World. It's dnd like easy to run and rules lite. I ran it for newbies and was very intuitive.

The campign begins next Tuesday with each episode hopefully releasing every Tuesday after that. This TFTL run should be close to 20h of content (at least that's what we've nearly recorded so far).
