We all know the stories of the Midsodor, of it’s life and eventual decline. They say declining traffic was one of the main reasons, but there was also another reason. This is that story.

A universe where Smudger and Stanley exist at the same time? Yes please. But seriously, I loved this. The tension, the anger of Stanley being disregarded by everyone, and the part where he’s being dragged under and is screaming is just bone chilling. The final images of Stanley where they need to be brightened up are chilling in their own way, as Stanley - buried alive by the spirits of those who drowned in the mines - rots away until his face is gone and nothing but a rusted smokebox door. This has quickly become my favourite story so far of Tales From The Scrap Siding 2.

Hell. This was actually disturbing. So many ghost stories are just that, a fun thing to imagine. Here… an engine ripped from his purpose. Neglected maintenance causing a failure at a critical time. Flooding waters weakening the earth, causing everything to collapse in on itself. Freaking heck, the collapsing mine is even canon! Percy had an episode at one. Thank you for the story. Little fun note, in my home state, we’re restoring one of the engines that were sent to Europe during the war. I can’t wait to see her steam again

Jesus Christ. This is easily the darkest Thomas story I've ever experienced that doesn't require the explicitly supernatural or people acting out of character to work. Almost no visual aid to tell the tale, and yet what little there is does more for this horrific nightmare than any amount of VFX budget could accomplish. Bravo.

I really liked how this story portrayed Stanley and Smudger in more of a positive light, though it made the ending hurt that much more. I always found their stories to be terribly tragic, and their implied fates even moreso. Seeing Stanley's face rot away was absolutely terrifying, such a brutal way to go.

in my head-canon before the MSR closed in December 1946, Stanley was scrapped after the accident but some say his ghost still haunts the rails to this day
@thomasrigby6166 Жыл бұрын
In my TTTE universe, Stanley and Smudger are played out of sympathy where they could no longer be runned on rails due to the expensive cost of repairs so the manager decided to make them useful in a different way instead of just selling them for scrapped. Stanley would go out trying to pump out the water flooding the mines and Smudger being selled to a heritage railway.
@NessWithABeard2 жыл бұрын
The shortest response I could give to this video was "Yikes!" The longest response I could give is a list of impressions I got while watching this: - I never did understand what the Mid Sodor needed a pumping engine for, nor did I know what good a generator could do at the back of an engine shed. Yet, the way it's explained here gave me the answers I never knew I needed. - Smudger and Stanley being in the same universe is quite an interesting take. Which would lead to questions as to how they differ from each other if they actually coexisted. Would the two engines agree or disagree on somethings? Was Smudger anything like the "Left Behind" story Narrow Gauge told a few years back? Was he alright after the railway in this story closed? - I think I can only agree to somethings Stanley was ranting about, especially with his feelings of being ignored when it came to concerns. On the other hand, he seems way too negative, always putting down others around him. Pretty hard to listen to someone who sees only problems and not solutions. - What happened as the whole area he was in caved in, I feel like either vengeful ghosts or natural occurences are valid explanations. On the one hand, Stanley neglected to pump out the ice cold water from the mines so the workers can work and get out safely. Of course, any water still there would weaken the ground. But on the other hand, the spirits of those workers who didn't make it knew who was at fault and would teach him a lesson one way or another. Whichever theory you take, you can be dead certain this was all his own fault. Stanley would have to learn the hard way why this railway would worry about a "few spills". - I don't know if anyone else caught it. But near the end there is this very dark picture depicting the aftermath of the landslide. I don't know about you. But this fate seems to be a lot worse than Dukes while also paralleling it. Duke at least was kept safe in his shed while it was buried in all that soil and foliage, making it more likely for him to be restored and put back into service. Stanley, on the other hand, isn't so lucky. He went down with the shed, buried in a whole pile of wood, brick, soil and metal with no way to get out and can do nothing but call for help. He was possibly killed and what workmen have been hearing this whole time was his spirit still trying to find some way to escape, yet even in death, his salvation is beyond him. I Have No Wheels And I Must Run.

Something tells me that the sinkholes everywhere else are the workers… looking for him. They’re mere spirits now, they might not remember exactly where he was. What I can see is this. There are three frames, the first of which is Stanley’s smokebox and face. He looks as if he’s rather dizzy, even though he’s clearly anything else. He might even still be alive. The second is the same, except Stanley’s eyeholes are black and the face is a yellowish-brown tone. By now, he’s definitely dead. The third is the smokebox, almost faceless. Rusty. However, it’s not completely empty, I can still see Stanley’s eyeholes, even if the space around them have been rusted, making the eyeholes look stretched. If he’d always looked like, that, his eyes would be ENORMOUS. *And yet, people can still hear him…*
