Man, this was really dark. I like how Percy was portrayed with an air of maturity, instead of the infantilized persona from the Miller era. In a way Jinty and Pug seem like a dark mirror to Thomas and Percy: A 0-6-0T and 0-4-0T duo that met a far crueler fate.

A very heartbreaking story. All of sudden it's made me wonder if Journey Beyond Sodor was something like this.
@streamlinedengine2 жыл бұрын
This story went a peg beyond haunting and heartbreaking in my eyes: it captured Thomas and Percy’s characters perfectly. Thomas is the friend that just has to, by principle, be a jerk to Percy, and yet he is willing to venture all the way to the mainland for Percy, to confirm the well-being of Percy’s friends, Jinty and Pug. Percy, while bouncy and naive most of the time, is actually quite mature and calm in emotionally-taxing situations. I’ve always chocked that down to the fact that despite being a shunter, he’s been through quite a lot more of life than Thomas ever did. Think about it, Thomas came to Sodor relatively soon after being built, while Percy has worked many places before being bought by TFC in that workshop. (This isn’t canon confirmed tho, just my HC) Kudos to you for writing such a nice story!
@elirosen13912 жыл бұрын
Great story. It was so heartbreaking when Thomas discovered what happened to Jinty and Pug. Still, it was equally heartwarming how brave Percy was to accept the loss of his friends, and be able to move on in gratitude at having a home where he could live and be valued, and not live in anger that other engines weren't so lucky.

I've always headcanoned something like this. Most of the main steam fleet have been on the island so long that they'd be quite out of the loop with mainland events. They (the small ones especially, who don't take trains to Barrow) would be rather ignorant of the steam genocide. Maybe the big ones, who do take trains over the bridge, and the late arrivals such as Oliver and the twins would have purposely kept them in the dark to protect them.

Haven't seen the short 'Smokeless Mainland', but I do know Richard Jordan's story based on that during the Main 8's time in London. Poor Jinty and Pug. I wish they were preserved, and I do feel bad for Thomas and Percy when they each learned the dark truth.

While the story is sad, I feel like could tear at will instead of tearing by force. But I also like how Percy is handling the situation. Sad, but yet surprisingly calm and understanding instead of getting into a melt down, especially how fast he caught what Thomas was hiding to not hurt his feelings. Even if this wasn't a Halloween video, I still felt scared a little. Excellent work! = 3

I've got an idea for a story. It's called the Ghost Train of Lancefield. Have you heard of a village named Lancefield in the state of Victoria, Australia? You have now. In any case, it's a ghost town nowadays. It shall take you an hour's drive to arrive from Melbourne CBD. Nonetheless, in its heyday it had a railway station and many factories as well as its IGA supermarket, bakery, pub and takeaway joint. The station hasn't gotten demolished, yet it's now a shadow of its former self. It's a Bed and Breakfast nowadays. The Lancefield line nevertheless had a dark history. It operated between 1889 and 1956. It closed because of World War 2. That's when Australia in addition to the other Allies fought the Axis powers. Among said nations was Japan which was bombing Asia and Australia furiously, and had a plan to force New Zealand's surrender by taking Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and other nearby isles. Sometime during the war, a fuel train had to travel to Lancefield down the rickety line. The engine was pushings its tankers, as there wasn't much room to turn around because the sidings were filled with waiting coaches and trucks mostly. Anyway, that night an empty troop train was en route to Lancefield under the cover of darkness to avoid detection by Japanese warplanes. The driver and fireman couldn't see the tankers blocking the line and there was a massive explosion, killing them even though the guard had jumped clear. Nearly a decade after the tragedy, the Lancefield line closed. But every night you can hear a ghostly steam train hissing at the B&B all because it never made it to its destination.

Fun fact: this story was based off a video by the same title “Smokeless mainland” by 25ennsoku (i think that’s the name) where Thomas goes to the mainland, but instead of being jinty and pug as told in this story, it’s the black tank engines percy told his story to.

Here is my guess to why they never wrote back. Jinty and Pug were working their final days, their crews were sad as well but it was a busy day with no time to write a goodbye letter. By nighttime, the crews dropped their fires for the final time and went into an office to get some papers so some letters could be written. However, in that short time, the crews came out to find both of them gone. It turned out that as soon as they walked away a few feet, a diesel shunter took the two away. They were gone. Now, you may ask, why didn't they write earlier when first heard? Well, the thing is, both crews were told that late afternoon by the yard master that the two were to be withdrawn that evening. It was sudden and out of nowhere. Now you may ask, why didn't the crews search? The crews were never told where they were being moved to and it wasn't safe traveling across the huge yard at night. The crews were devastated as they went home. With the upcoming of more diesels, they had to learn how to drive them. They never did go to those sidings and even if they did, it’s possible that Jinty and Pug may have been scrapped enough that they sadly passed away or rusted to death due to them being in shabby conditions already before being withdrawn. Now, this is only my assumption, we may never know what really happened
