James hates rusty red scrap iron, and even more so when he’s sent to deliver some to the smelters one evening. Once there, his paths cross with a young amateur film maker, and what he captures on film reveals a story from the darkest time in steam engine history. A story of what comes from toying with life and death.

An excellent use of scant resources (when I first saw the ghost train the 'Experiment' is based on lumber across the screen as a kid, it genuinely unsettled me) to create one of the most chilling fan-made audio stories this fandom has seen for quite some time. By far my favourite of this batch of stories thus far. Props to everyone involved: the atmosphere, pacing and ultimate payoff were all pitch-perfect, to say nothing of the voicework and sound effects (particularly those used for the 'Experiment'). 👍 Can see this one becoming the 'Wandering Coach' of this batch of stories in terms of the number of adaptions that get made. Speaking generally to the core story tenant, the mere concept of a 'Frankenstein's Engine' in this universe is a un-nerving one to say the least, as this story proves to great effect. The engineer paid a heavy price for his toying with life & death, but that is nothing compared to the fate of the 'donor' engines' souls: trapped in what can only be described as a nightmarish limbo, constantly staggering through the mortal relm, crying out in their desperate, futile search for a way to end their perpetual torment. Honestly can't blame James for shuddering at the sight of scrap trains after this; I'd personally never be able to look at them in quite the same way again. As for the main components of the 'Experiment' (working off of what the original model used), the boiler came from an A1/A3, the chassis/wheels from a 9F and the tender seems to most closely resemble that of a V2 (Green Arrow's class) as far as I can tell. Truly a Frankenstein's Engine if ever one existed.

Fun fact: The engine that was "The Experiment" was built with the original Gordon's body from the unaired 1983 pilot, the chassis from Murdoch's model, and the tender from the scrapped, boiler sludge filled tender Henry was pulling from series 3 episode "Tender Engines". "The Experiment" would show up in the series 8 episode "Halloween".

I can only imagine what CIE's Pat would be like. Especially when this cobbled together mass of spare parts was actually a success. I don't know if they'd be the architypical Frankenstein's monster, who's like a big child that doesn't know how to handle what they have at their disposal, or even someone with a more Quasimodo from The Hunchback of Notre Dame type of pitifulness to them... But I can only imgine the type of voices they'd probably be haunted by in their mind, of all the engines whose parts were used to make them.

I saw a comment once, which said that Edward is the gatekeeper that bears all the terrifying and tragic secrets of Sodor, so that the other engines wouldn’t be burdened by them and can live a happy life, and Sodor can still be the wonderland people know. After this story, I think that theory is quite valid.

That could explain this mysterious ghost engine from the S8 episode 'Halloween'. I really like that take on it. It is both eery and haunting at the same time for an engine to be built in a smelter's yard just to relive the British Railways steam memory, but was an ultimate failure. And also, the beginning part reminded me of The Truth About Scrap, James' night similar to Henry & the Ghost Train (even though both he and Henry in this series had paranormal encounters here in this series) and going by the reference to Thomas to the Rescue, I guess it might've taken place during S8, but that's just me.

Now call me sick and twisted, but I’m just picturing an episode where Edward has a nightmare about the time he was at Killdane, but he’s on the same tracks as the shed, and we see the guy run out, but in a more grotesque nightmarish appearance, disappearing, then, right in front of Edward a short distance, we see the shed doors get pushed open by the giant train, and it puffed out slow just like the story, coming closer, and closer, but when it’s inches away from Edward’s buffers, it stopped. Edward is perplexed with fear as he looked up at the undead engine right in front of him. Nothing happens for a minute. “Uh, h-hello?” Stammered Edward. “I, I hope you found the peace and rest that you were looking for.” Then, it’s face appears, but not like any Thomas face. It’s face is a Jack o lantern style carved hollow appearance with eyeholes on the smoke box door, and a huge, jagged mouth is at the bottom. But it looks sad. Edward wanted to run away, but this might anger the locomotive. Instead, he just sat there on the tracks, taking on its appearance. Then, the engine spoke in 3 voices at once. *”Why did the engineer do this? Why did he stitch us back together into an unbreakable bond? Just to make us suffer?”* It paused. Edward’s fear had vanished into concern as he felt sorry for the big engine. Edward then found the courage to speak. “I know this is bad the way it is, and I know you’re in a lot of pain, but there’s not a lot that we can do, except, push through the pain and try to make some better moments through most of it.” Then, the Killdane Experiment spoke again. *”We’ve been roaming this scrapyard and other abandoned rails for years, and still, we never found the rest we deserve. The only way we can rest is if our parts are returned back to the locations the way they were left, but we’ve been smelted down and fused back together in, THIS!”* Edward then soon felt fear again as the engine towered over him. Then he felt brave again to speak. “I know. I understand what you’re going through, but we engines can only do but so much to help the ones who’s lives were spirited. The only thing we can do is be there for one another, lend an ear to talk to, and be open and honest about what’s been going on and do the best we can to push through the trouble that life has been giving us.” The big engine then sighed, understanding what Edward had meant. Then, Edward spoke again. “Just, do me one favor. I want you to understand that I’m your friend, and I’m here for you whenever and wherever you need me. Just, take it easy, and enjoy the moments here on the island of sodor while you still can, before it’s a matter of time to go to the afterlife to become separated. I’m sorry for the trouble you’re going through, and I hope for nothing but the best.” The scrap engine’s scary, hollow face then gently twisted into a smile, understanding what he meant. *”Thank you, Edward.”* It spoke. *”Your kind words mean so much to this deformed creation, and it actually took away some of the pain we’ve been dealing with for years. Despite our differences, you really are a good friend to us. And for that, we thank you. Now, we may continue our journey. We may not be at rest yet, but our pain has vanished for a little and it’s all thanks to your kind words.”* Edward smiled to the big engine, knowing that it’s trouble has been comforted. Then, as if by magic, a face appears on the front of the scrap engine. But Edward didn’t react, as if he’d seen it before. It’s true face! It looks similar to Hurricane’s, but it’s got wrinkles and it’s mixed with the flying Scotsman’s face. Then, it’s combined voices was only fixed to the A1 part of the combine. “Well, farewell, friends.” He said. And the Killdane Experiment smiled as it let out a long and low whistle, but this whistle sounded like a happy one as if it seen an old friend after a long time. Then, it started puffing, creaking away backwards, onto another siding out of the way. It had finally found a resting point, and it was all thanks to kindness. And Edward drifted off back to sleep, knowing that it was all a dream and the Killdane Experiment could one day find peace. James, who was nearby, overheard his dream being halfway awake just smiled as he closed his eyes and said goodnight, but not to anyone in particular, but to Edward, and the Killdane Experiment.

I've only heard of the Killdane Experiment in the past couple of months, so I didn't know about this video till last night. Well done, VERY well done! You've managed to achieve what most in this fandom spectacularly fail at: a properly scary, but not over the top, Thomas story. No biofusion with Shed 17/G1, no nucelar fallout mutations from Sodor Fallout, and none of the psychological analogue horror from Blue Snowplow. Yes, there's still an air of body horror, given the Experiment is a A1 with 9F wheels and an old LNER tender, but that's literally what the Ghost Engine model from Halloween was- it was a hodge-podge of parts wandering the scrapyard for a single scene! And you've taken that and turned it into a great story. And to have it be 3 souls in agony from a disrupted slumber- genius! This is one of the best spooky Thomas stories to come out of the fandom in a long time.

I had heard of this "Killdane Experiment" for quite some time, but never got around to seeing where it originated from until now. I always love me a good spooky Thomas story, especially when it's based on obscure characters such as this. I recall watching the episode "Halloween" as a kid, and that ghostly scrap engine stuck with me. I was well and truly spooked then, and I'm spooked now. Well done! And believe it or not, there was an engine class in real life with a shape similar to Gordon that had a 2-10-0 wheel arrangement: the War Department "Austerity" 2-10-0's introduced in 1943. Coincidentally, one of them which is preserved at the Severn Valley Railway is named Gordon, and has been dressed up as Gordon in the past for Day Out With Thomas events. I personally always headcanoned that scrap engine as being an "Austerity" loco, but I certainly like your version of a cursed fusion between an A1 and a 9F.

Since it was Miss Jenny’s uncle that created the Killdane Experiment, do you think he’s still around regretting his decision to revive steam on the Mainland or has he been locked up in jail for his misdeeds? And also, what was his first name?
@22Tesla
@22Tesla Жыл бұрын
I can see him not exactly regretting his decisions in some small part. He was trying to revive Steam on the mainland, a noble gesture, it's just that he went around it in such a wrong and terrible manner. He was locked up in jail, and possibly has since been released; with a permanent reminder of his misdeeds considering all the scars and his missing hand. As far as first name, I don't know I'll leave that up to you to decide what his first name really was

@@22Tesla I guess we can’t blame him for trying to bring back steam power to the railways. But like you said, he went around in such a wrong and terrible manner doing so. And now he has to live with the scars and missing hand as a reminder for his misdeeds for creating a horrific looking engine that roams the Ironworks seeking to rest in peace which will never be found.

I came back to watch it again and got hooked and I got scared and actually teared up a little hearing the ghost of the Killdane experiment. It wants to rest but a curse has been placed on it for its sleep has been disrupted. Maybe the spirit of the monsterous creation could be comforted if an engine who saw it before could be recognized, like Edward.

I think that if The Halloween Engine returned in "All Engines Go!", it would just use Gordon's model complete with the 2-6-2 wheel configuration and four-wheeled Fowler tender instead of the wheel configuration of a 9F which is 2-8-0 and an LNER V2's tender, only covered in rust. Similar to how Henry in that show is Gordon but painted green, with the larger firebox, and of course, the number 3 on the tender.

@@22Tesla Lately, I have been thinking that if someone was using body parts of different animals to create a new species, this strange creature would have: the ears of a Red Panda, the head and neck of a Scarlet Macaw, the back and stomach of a Golden Retrever, the front legs of a Zebra, the back legs and backside of a Hippopotamus, and 4 tails which would come from a Monkey, a Crocodile, a Llama, and a Sungazer Lizard. So this creature would be a Mammal/Bird/Reptile hybrid.
