I was on the march to Glastonbury. We'd been squatting/protesting on Lord Montagu's land at Beaulieu as hew was head of English Heritage who "owned" Stone Henge". When the police trashed the site at Stoney Cross I went off and joined the march. I remember the first night they put us in a field near Verwood. We had nothing but what we stood up in and the police thought we would freeze to death that night. But, news had got out, and some of the local people turned up with food, sleeping bags, clothes and even baccy. And so the carnival procession began. On we marched, having a great time, playing musical instruments as we marched through the various Wiltshire towns. As the news spread, people joined and the public gave us more and more stuff. Everywhere we stopped, they would turn up and show us a kindness that you might not think was possible. Meanwhile, the police just sat outside out little camps looking thoroughly miserable whilst we had a great time. Probably one of the best times of my life. (Just like to give a huge thanks to a guy from Bridport who had an old ambulance who helped us by carrying our stuff). This though is where i get a little confused by your account as, to my knowledge, no one was arrested, that was the next year. Next year we set off again, trying to get to Stone Henge but the police stopped us and basically marched us about around Salisbury to a place called Hanging Langford where we camped for the night in a field. The next day we set off and got to a place on the road where it was a cut. I remember the police, en mass, appearing over from both sides of the cut and arresting everyone they could get their hands on. As the clip shows we were arrested for obstructing the highway but they had marched us up it in the first place, we didn't want to be there, we wanted to be at the stones. Weirdly I was arrested by two police that knew me as they were from the new Forest where I was a hunt saboteur. I ended up handcuffed to another "hippie" on a coach and driven to the cells in Stroud. The following morning we were driven to Swindon and put before the court where we were given a hearing date and bound over on the condition we got out of Wiltshire and didn't come back. Great times... Battered and bruised, but unrepentant.

You have me confused because I know of the march to Glastonbury happening from stony cross in 1986..1985 was year of the bashing at the beanfield near Cholderton woods. The convoy had driven down from Savernake forest and a reported 520 people were arrested in and around the area. People were at hanging Langford in 1986 at similar time to convoy at stoney cross before the early morning raid eviction leaving people with only what they stood in. Not sure how many were arrested after being evicted from hanging Langford but I seem to recall 200

I still remember how it felt when the criminal justice act was implemented, young people today really do not know the freedom we had to roam & party back then it was all over by 1994 forgotten buried by Thatcher legislation.

100% the best film I've seen in decades maybe in my life!! This film was truly emotional for me and brought back so many memories form the 1980's and the 1990's! The battle of the bean field really opened my eyes to how the powers that be. could be so unjust towards people of peace, I was only 15 at the time but it changed my view of the world on that day and I have never forgotten it. I never liked the "Brew Crew" aspect of it but I do see that it emerged out of heavy handed tactics employed by the police at the time and Margaret Thatcher's policies in dealing with the travellers. I have been to all sorts of free parties and festivals and raves with "Chipping Sodbury/Avon Free Festival 1991" being one of the best free festivals I have ever been to! Big shout out to to Circus Warp ,DIY and any other rave kits that were there! Ellie and Scott you guys rock and I hope to meet you again one day , until then keep doing what you do and keep enjoying life! I would encourage anyone who enjoyed this video to also listen to ~ Hawkwind's - "Confrontation" a track all about the battle of the beanfield. Love you guys, I look forward to many more great videos, wherever you are whatever you are doing, best youtubers ever!

Dozens if not hundreds of the classic vans, busses and lorries now on the 21st century show circuit as restored lovelies were saved initially by travellers back in the 80s/90s when nobody wanted them. Heavy Handed mate is the understatement of forever. If someone ever compiled a youtube of all our worst stories it would be terrifying and make a lot of folk cry for a long time. Hence vids like this which recapture the love, freedom, positivity and people power aspects of what happened are so much more important :)

Love this. I was a kid coming back from my Grandparents house in Dorset when we went past the Beanfield brutalities. Apparently the footage went missing from the BBC? I later became a bit of a raver and always idolised the free festival scene, but I think the brew crew and crack killed it and the rave scene and associated pharma became heavily exploited and commercialised. For me the spirit died then really.

The rave scene was absolutely the continuation of the hippie and traveller scene. I saw the transition between the last of the free festivals and the first underground clubs with the same vibe. 94 and 95 were pivotal years. Letham festival in 94 was anarchic and wild and heavily populated. 95 the police had patrol cars out to stop people reaching the site. THey had also dropped piles of stones so no busses or vans could enter the site. We camped anyway and there was a bit of fun going on but it was shadow of the last year. Criminal Justice act (now a law) had killed it. 95 was when freedom died. Luv and Peace.
@johneeeemarry344 ай бұрын
Letham festival was much better in the 80s when it was a pict / hippie festival with Scottish punk bands playing at it…the first techno sound system turned up in 1991 which wasn’t a problem, in fact, it was pretty good ! It was English travelers / brew crew that killed it..they refused to leave and their dogs killed live stock.. nothing to do with law changes or the police..

That had been the original plan. After some consideration I decided not to pursue the Legacy of the Beanfield film, I had planned to make in the format I had planned to. The story is much more complex and greater research would be required than I am able to handle independently and would require a great deal of time travelling across the country interviewing many people, which in reality I don't think I am able to do. The interview I did with Roger, gives an amazing introduction to the topics I wanted to share with people and so I edited a film using the interview and found footage. There are some great documentaries on KZbin that are well worth searching for to learn more about the history of travellers 😊

@@alexfenton229Yeh, Bristol was terrible for this. People used to come from all over Wales and West country to buy gear 🫤

Me and my mate Arthur loved it! I was a teenager at the time but Arthur Mix was all over it! The policing went from the miners to the travellers to the football crowds. I've been at many a match when it's the police kicking off and caused the trouble, right wing press the next day, totally different to what I witnessed. It'll never change, if you don't conform you're a suspect. Land of the free... I don't think so 🤔

All at Thatcher's behest I may add. She hated the Unions, the miners, working class, Scousers, feckin despised and demonised the Irish... She just hated anyone that would not conform to her doll's house politics the ratbag!

I understand mine is a pushcart shelter for the holidays but that's now something similar to your bus later in my life it's about 3 poncho alpha shelter with a watering hole on the property might be almost a leap frog dream but that's a lot to manage here and there so a space saver is out the question.... wow it looks awesome though THANKS

Great documentary although it was too short! Really interesting and shocking insight into the life of the original van lifers. Brought back some great memories of my friends, the raves and acid music in the late 80s and early 90s around South Devon. Hope there's a part two.

No part 2 I’m afraid but hope this film inspires people to do more research, there are some really great documentaries on KZbin on individual elements introduced in this film 😊

Some of us are still trying. I'm with the dub bus krew and stonehenge festival campaign and we've had a been getting gatherings together for equinoxes and solstices again, the last few years. Bands and dj's playing. I got a feeling mick came along to an equinox on the drove with willy x. We got away with being a couple of miles from the stones this year, for a few days. If Anyones interested please give me a shout x
