Nah, your critiques aren't overbearing at all. There is no excuse for them to STILL be failing at remastering this game. It's one of, if not the, most beloved entries into the franchise. It's not a demanding game resource-wise. Give it the love it deserves. This should not still feel like a lazy product.

A game that didnt need another remastering especially without its sequel. I can play the PS3 version on the steamdeck along with the sequel. So i feel thats probably the best way to play Symphonia Chronicles now. I wish they would just remaster Abyss, Xillia Duology, Graces F, Hearts R etc

The fact that this was ported 3 times... yes its the most beloved in the series but its literally playable in all consoles or emulator if you have a good PC... and I agree... they should release other titles that wasnt release in the west like INNOCENCE, HEARTS, REBIRTH, DESTINY and the likes...

I would imagine doing a simple remaster of Xillia and Graces F would be really easy since they still look great and play well. But yeah Rebirth and other older games would be nice too. I just want a proper Phantasia release based off the PS1 version since the GBA version we got in the west was terrible.

@@slashinghades7347 well for phantasia ps1 there is atleast a fan translation and pretty much everything can run a ps1 emulator. If they decide to make a phantasia port i would like them to bring Tales of phantasia narikiri dungeon X to the west which included a phantasia remake as well. Phantasia is a strange one since, besides the Gba and Ps1 port they gave it 2 remakes on the PSP for some reason. Given that it was the start of the series maybe it would be time for a full on remake in 3d But still some of the games that never left Japan or came never to Europe would be preferable for me, i mean here in Europe we only ever gotten the 3ds version of abyss and legendia never came to us at all. Really strange decisions

The funny thing about the issues you have said is it's also happening to me in Tales of Innocence R on the Vita3k emulator.. When using OpenGL Renderer instead of Vulkan, the battle transitions are white instead of the glass breaking, and viewing skits makes the background all black too.. I mean WTF, how is this a coincidence, Lol So they just used an emulator to run it on the Switch maybe??..

I love this game, I instantly bought a physical copy. I was extremely upset when I got into a fight with 4 enemies and the FPS dropped to like 15. I was sad. The PC port of the game, which is just the Playstation updated version from long ago (the port this remaster is based off of) is much better. THOUGH I WILL SAY it will looks very pretty. If they would be able to fix some of the problems with an update. The switch can HANDLE this game.

When you look at this compared to Metroid Prime Remastered... it's night and day. One was done from a place of passion and genuine desire to bring a fantastic game to new audiences and give existing fans something truly special to return to. The other was done for money.

It really sucks that all they had to do was upgrade it to 60 FPS and still have the sequel since it was on the PS3 as well. I don’t understand how these developers don’t see the problems

The way the game works, it can't simply be upgraded to 60fps without breaking the game unfortunately. If you go look up things for what modders have attempted to do with the Chronicles release on Steam, it literally breaks the game and even to this point is still only playable at 30fps.

it's literally impossible to unlock the fps, I don't know what they did with the ps2 version but it's forever locked at 30. It's a shame really.

If Square Enix was able to do it with Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 Remix then Tales devs literally has no excuse to put an effort into this.

I feel like the reason Bandai Namco did us dirty on this release was that compared to other titles from the GC era waiting in the wings, Symphonia already had its time in the sun w/ the Chronicles release and they felt it was relatively recent enough that they could give this one less work and put the lion's share of their efforts towards titles from the same time period that weren't as fortunate.

It's not fair saying this is "held back by the Switch hardware", because it isn't. It's a Gamecube game that the Switch is more than capable of running properly. It's more appropriate to say that BN had no interest in optimizing it for the hardware.

For whatever odd reason, I decided to cancel the pre-order, for my Switch, and just buy it when it goes on sale. After watching this review, I'm so glad I did and unless they fix it the issues, this might be a game I skip completely as I already have it and just wanted an upgraded copy, which is more of a downgrade at this point. If I do get it, it'll now be for the PS4.

Even on the switch when I played tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition That had a lot of crashes in it too on the switch even the skits would crash Even battles would freeze up or crash several times over but now they've patched it so many times now the game works perfectly fine like the switch version never had issues in the 1st place so they probably do the same thing to Tales of symphonia Remastered We'll probably also get patch updates in fixes Dissolve these problems you're talking about just like On the switch When they fixed similar problems on tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition

But it isn’t held back by switch hardware wtf, switch runs nier automata, persona 5, dq 11, monster hunter rise, botw and a giant amount of other games that manage to look gorgeous and still run decently. What remasters like that are held back by is the lack of optimization and laziness. I’ve literally seen even vns work really slowly on switch. Just some artwork and spites with scrolling text. It’s not hardware, it’s optimization. Of course I agree with the issue that switch hardware is so weak nowadays that it’s hard to optimize stuff for it but it’s still entirely possible, just as some later titles show.

I have Trouble with the enemies in tales of symphonia in the first area two of my characters already fainted I don’t know it was just my bad skills or the enemies where unfair I played tales of berseria tales of vesperia and tales of arise but I had little trouble in those games

Great review and shame on Bandai-Namco for releasing this mess of a "remaster". It's inexcusable that Metroid Prime released the same time as this and, by all accounts, looks and runs great while Symphonia couldn't even do battle transitions right. It's unfortunate that every re-release this game's had has technical issues that simply make it inferior to the original GameCube version. I was genuinely hoping they'd get their act together for this one, but sadly I gotta pass. I simply can't reward such mediocrity and utter lack of even the most basic quality checks for a game that released over two decades ago. I could even stomach the 30 FPS if at least the rest of the game was up to par with past versions but they just botched every aspect of this one.

A game labeled REMASTER should never have less content, features, or optimizations than the original. 6 is pretty generous for a game that fails to deliver what's advertised right in the title.

Well it has more than the original (all the PS2/PS3/PC additions which included more quests, artes, mystic artes for all characters, costumes, etc) so by that scale it/the PS3/PC version are superior. The only thing the PS3/PC didn't do was 60 fps as those versions and this one are based off the PS2 version which they had to remake all the animations from scratch and lock to 30 fps as the PS2 was a weaker system than the GC and couldn't handle 60 fps and they kinda zoomed in the camera a bit so traveling in the overworld could be annoying. The only real valid complaint for the Switch version in regards to fps that stands imo would be the claims that it drops below 30fps while other versions don't (granted Switch is a weaker piece of hardware but even then it should be able to handle 30 fps at pretty much all times with this game). As far as this version goes it adds nothing new content wise that the PC/PS3 versions didn't add and just about all it did was upscale the game a bit more, add a few more details to character models/houses and the like, added a skip feature for a FEW cutscenes (mainly the FMV cutscenes if I"m right from what I've heard (haven't gotten the game myself yet), added a equipment feature that would automatically equip the best equipment available to the character, and maybe 1 or 2 other things. And as far as the Switch specific issues with this port (not in PS4/Xbox1 from all accounts) there's only the white transition between battles, the black background in the menu/skit screen (granted kinda works for the skits tbh as the black background makes reading the skits a lot easier as the text is white and in the older games it could easily be harder to read/blend into the map in the background...especially in the snow of the Flanoir region and since they're no voice acting for 99% of the skits and the auto advance is fairly fast this makes it much easier to read than before if I"m tbh...the main menu being black is meh but passable I guess...it's no different than most modern Tales menus nowadays though I think a brown/light brown background with some sort of border trim rather than just plain black would've been a better idea...supposedly you can change the background color though if you mess around with the settings a bit), and the previously mentioned frame drops below 30 fps instead of being able to keep it at 30fps at all times (granted can't even confirm this myself right now as I don't have the game so whether or not people are talking out their asses in this regard is debatable...I watched someone play it live last night for an hour and saw no frame drops at all unless it's only in late areas). The ONLY other valid complaints that are solid would be the price they're asking for even if the game was working perfectly well without any of the Switch specific issues rather than $40 it should've been about $20 to $25 max for a 20 year old game, especially a minimal effort port, and the other main issue is the lack of adding Dawn of the New World to this port like they did with Symphonia Chronicles on PS3 which they likely didn't do only because they never added it to the PC version of Symphonia (which if I'm right released at no more than about $20 itself so the $40 is stupid in that regard) and they knew if they tried to add it to the Switch/Xbox ports than PC fans would likely flip if they didn't add a port of Dawn there too...if it was PS4/5 only they may have gotten away with it by just saying they're directly bringing the Chronicles version of the game over via PSN but the other versions getting both games but not the PC version would likely set off a riot there. Quite frankly the ONLY real reason to go for the Switch version would be if the Switch is your only console/your PC can't play the game/you don't play games on your PC (work only, it's too weak, or something along those lines) or if you want to play the game handheld and you don't have a Steamdeck/want to worry about connection issues with your Steam account causing the game to close (think that's how it still works on Steamdeck, don't have one myself though so not 100% sure). So unless you can/are willing to get it on another console I'd say just wait for a price drop if you want it for Switch...hell even if they update the game to fix some of the Switch specific issues (they will never do the 60 fps so don't wait for THAT update, the animations are framed locked like I mentioned and will likely stay that way) I'd still say wait until it hits at least half it's current price as it's already about 2x more expensive than it should be on release (probably what I will do as I want to get the game handheld so will likely buy the Switch version at Gamestop/Amazon when it hits half off).

Buy it on Steam which is based on the PS3 port and play it on a Steam Deck or on any of the recent handheld Windows devices. It plays much better and is cheaper too.

maybe the switch version needs some patches for some of these issues. either way, it shouldn't be having these issues. it hurts my heart that my favorite rpg is having all of these problems on the switch, when we know it could run the game decently well.

i've been playing this game since it came out and i love it. I do have some issues with the game though. Its an great game. I enjoy it a lot. Its my first tales game and its a great game, but not being able to skip the dialogue with a skip option is annoying especially if you didnt save then the game crashed. I had two crashed but one crashed set me back a battle and i just wish we could skip the dialogue. But teh game is really enjoyable. I love the fighting. Didnt think i would but its amazing. I really love the fighting. I think its so much better than turn based combat, but dont want this combat style to take over turn based combat bc i love ir. I do wish the world map had beacons or little icons telling you where to go bc i did get lost a few times. And i really dont how uou cant zooom in on the world yo find out which area is where. Basically just wanted it to be a bit more modern. But overall i love the game. Its amazing and i thonk a 6 is too long i say 7.5 would be better

Damn i remember my first Tales of game was Symphonia 1 on the gamecube almost 15years ago and it one of my most beloved entry in the series. Later i got it on the ps3 remaster? ToS Chronicle i think was it together with ToS 2 which is also a fan favorite of mine even though many dont like the title for some reason D: sad to hear the switch port is bad but personally i hope we got more older gamer (especially Tales of Graces) to newer platforms or PC

They ported the ps2 japonese version for the base of this remaster, a shame! The gamecube version is way more fast and runs at 60fps, the ps2 has long loads and runs at 30fps.

Question - I've never played a Tales game! Where do I start? I still own a PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch and Xbox One X. I'm a bit of a boon for playing things in release or chronological order depending on the series.

Well Tales of Symphonia was originally on GameCube at 60fps. It later got a PS3 remaster based on the Japanese only PS2 version. It included some extra content, the sequel game but was only 30fps since that's what the PS2 version was. I think Bersia and/or Vesperia are the more recent goods ones. I don't think there's an order to play the games other than callbacks, could be wrong there though.

the Tales of series is all stand alone, each entry is its own universe and they have no relation between them... except for Zesistria and Berseria, where Berseria is a prequel to the other although they each take place thousands of years apart and other than taking place in the "same" world there's no relation between them

Arise is a very modern version of Tales, I definitely recommend it but it should be noted that it's very different from the games before it. I would very heavily recommend Xillia or Graces F for the PS3 if you don't mind digging it out, but there's no connective tissue between any games that aren't direct sequels that would require you to play them in a specific order. INCOMING WALL OF TEXT. --- Individual games in the Tales series are almost never actually connected, that is to say, you can start anywhere that doesn't have 2 in the title. This remaster is underwhelming, but it is the earliest title available on modern platforms, so you might wanna start here. Aside from that, vesperia, beseria, and arise are also great games. There's also Zestiria, but I didn't play that much of it. Additionally, you also have access to tales of graces F and Xillia 1&2 since you own a ps3. Note: Many of these games have not rereleased and aren't available on modern platforms as a result. order of release, taking out any games not accessible on your platforms -> Symphonia ->Vesperia -> Graces F -> Xillia -> Xillia 2 -> Zestiria -> Berseria -> Arise. Hope this helps.

I think Dawn of the New World just sucks as it feels like middling fanfiction of two brats playing Pokemon while the original ToS cast act like caricatures of their former selves (like Sheena being subject to falling down holes when it only happened one time). I played it once on Wii where the characters had bad magic targeting AI and repeatable quests that were mostly there to just get more money, loot, and exp for your monsters. Frankly I already have this game on steam which I feel is a good remaster alternative (don't see much problem about 30 fps myself) and probably cheaper too at $20 or so.

I have a really hate/love relationship with this series. Seems like every other Tales game I play is bad. Symphonia, one of the best games I've ever played. Symphonia 2, Kill me. Zestiria, honestly gameplay was the best part. Vesperia, bored me to death ngl. Berseria, right up there with Symphonia. Now starting Arise. But I'm afraid this pattern will repeat.

It's really unacceptable to sell a game at full price when it's not only a port, but the worst version of it to ever come out! I played the PAL CGN version which only ran at 50FPS (Technically 25, but that's due to interlacing) but it runs SO MUCH SMOOTHER than this. It's not limited by Switch hardware. This is the PS3 version of the game which was based on the PS2 version. The devs outright refused to update the game properly with 60 FPS and whatnot. This is nothing more than a port of that version.

Neither they or anyone else can get it to 60 fps as the animations are tied to the 30 fps framerate. All attempts to do so by modders that fixed far worse technical failures than Symphonia's 30 fps have lead to the game breaking in stupid ways such as characters running in place, they're head/arms/bodies twisting around/etc. The ONLY way to get to 60fps would be to go back and re-create the models and animate them at 60 fps from scratch which likely wouldn't be worth the costs to do so unless they can hit close to half a million to a million plus new sales (which is unlikely to happen with a port). The ONLY other option would be a full on FFVIIR style remake which while could be good could lead to some completely separate issues that could piss fans off such as: -content being cut (likely to happen given how big Symphonia is) -possibility of them trying to cut the game into parts like FFVIIR as Symphonia is just as or more likely bigger than OG FF7...and I don't know about you I'd rather not wait a decade or more for such a remake to finish -almost certainly they'll need to get new VAs which will kinda hurt part of the game's charm given how good a job Scott Menville and Cam Clark did (I can't really see anyone else being Kratos and in regards to Lloyd I've always been less than pleased with the VA change for Dawn/World). -likelihood a lot of exploration will be removed in say towns and the like -likely removal of the world map for field maps which will likely piss people off like they always seem to do (I like field maps more personally but will suck to lose the rheairds and ship) and the chance we lose a few minor dungeons/locations (could see them cutting Katz village in particular)/ex dungeon being changed would be high -possible removal of the T and S system for techs and loss of many tech/artes as well -enemies will likely be turned into the Arise/whatever new Tales game is out at the time models and many cut altogether as Symphonia had MANY more enemy types than the last few games -and likely a few dozen other things I'm forgetting about too

Let's hope all these negatives can be patched. I have yet to be play this tales, and ive heard it is one of the best of the tales series. Ill probs get it when it goes on sale. The glass breaking transition is actually much prefered over that white screen considering I usually always play my switch in portable mode in bed at night so...

I am currently playing the PC version on steam, which isn't great, locked at 30FPS and with no real graphics options but it works and is better than playing the game on Gamecube. Still a great RPG but thanks for this review, you saved me some money.

Definitely. Metroid Prime released around the same time as this and by all accounts runs great. This isn't a Switch issue, it's just Bandai-Namco half-assing every aspect of this "remaster".

THE GAME IS NOT PLAYABLE. Paid for the Steam Version, can't apply the mods, and 4k texture pack. Now I'm curious if I have to buy it a third time for XBOX. I feel scammed but I want to play, I got the game in 2003 and I want to play it as an adult and understand it better.

Just like on switch how they fixed Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition Bugs End crashes Even some of the skits would crash one time out of all the skitz raven skid was the only 1 that crashed when I played it in English Even sometimes the battles would crash But look at now they fixed it and patched it and updated it so many times now look at how nice it works now on the switch So tales of symphonia remastered We'll probably get the same treatment and fixes in the future of fixing the bugs in the crashes and making the game play better they might even get rid of that black void during skets Restoring the original environment to the background when you see a skip will probably be restored We do live in an age where games can be patched updated and fixed So you really shouldn't be complaining Namco Bandai We'll probably fix symphonia Remastered Bugs and glitches On the switch Just like how they fixed the bugs and glitches that were in Vesperia On the switch that also had similar problems and look at how nicely that run runs on the switch nowadays it runs much better The game just came out Symphonia remastered The company is probably aware of the problems and they're probably working on making patches and updates to fix the problems on any platform that's having problem for the game So you shouldn't give up hope yet

That has nothing to do with the Switch. Metroid Prime just showed how a remastered version should be made, it’s much more detailed and runs at 60 fps. Bamco simply rushed version and should be ashamed of themselves. I hope there will be an uproar from the fans, there is no excuse.

other then that one the ONLY OTHER ENGLISH tales of PSP game was Eternia/Destiny 2 PS1 but it was a direct port of the PS1 game BUT that version only got released on the PSP in English in Europe and not in the USA/Canada. The other tales of PSP/Vita games ie the real Destiny 2 Rebirth and the OTHER Tales of the world games the 2nd and 3rd ones never left Japan Tales of Phantasia got 2 PSP versions neither one left Japan either.
