I was surprised at first that such a noodley boi was king of anything, but the more i think about it the more it makes sense. Reefs being so crowded favors such a body plan, and reefs of kaimere apply this doubly so for the especially shallow water and relatively flat and even sea floor. Fascinating and delightful to see such a delicately graceful creature hold dominion over such a magnificent ecosystem

Thanks a bunch! Yeah having such a slender body in tight spaces enables surprisingly large body size for such a claustrophobic ecosystem

I am so glad to revisit the mosasaurs of Kaimere again, as it was your very first clade video that got me hooked on this project; hook, line and sinker if you know what I mean! Another group I recommend supporting in the cause of a clean sea is 4Ocean. They not only help in cleaning out plastics and garbage from the ocean, but also make an attempt to recycle what they collect and sell it, such as a jacket and beaded bracelet I bought from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I like the new designs of the mosasaurs, it’s neat to see them deviate from other aquatic tetrapods like ichthyosaurs and cetaceans, as someone would expect seeing the differences between those two clades in appearances. I’m guessing the reason for a more apparent neck being mosasaurs relying on a muscular and crushing bite?
@TalesofKaimere11 ай бұрын
That’s certainly part of it, but another is the generally minimal amount of fat tissue in mosasaurs preventing the streamlined appearance of cetacean necks
@ruirui776411 ай бұрын
hey keenan why the redesign for the mosasaur necks (just curious)

The first Mosasaurs video was an overall introduction to this clade, and I overall very appreciated this second sequel episode exploring and precising elements on one of the 4 mains groups alive in Modern Kaimere that are the Serpent Mosasaurs. Only the part about the relationship that Mosasaurs had with Macropredatorial whales is missing here, while it was mentionned in the first episode. But to be fair, it wasn't really needed and the explantions we have about their evolutionnary history here is enough to have a good picture to what Mosasaurs have endured before becoming again the apex predators of the sea they are again in modern times on Kaimere.

I can see how large mosasaurs can outcompete pliosaurs as they seem to be more efficient in tackling large prey (eating/fighting other animals larger than themselves). Ex: a ptychodus mortoni tooth found in the stomach of a tylosaurus nepaeolicus and a mosasaurus skull showing injury from smaller tylosaurus. Mosasaurs also have ziphodont teeth (basically making them underwater Komodo dragons but non-venomous (or in Kaimere’s case, venomous) and seem to have bites more resistant to stresses (Anatomy and functional morphology of the largest marine reptile known, Mosasaurus hoffmanni (Mosasauridae, Reptilia) from the Upper Cretaceous, Upper Maastrichtian of The Netherlands). Pliosaurs though have powerful bite forces, seem to have bites less resistant to stresses compared to say, a crocodile of the same size (at least when exerting horizontal forces) (Bone-Breaking Bite Force of Basilosaurus isis (Mammalia, Cetacea) from the Late Eocene of Egypt Estimated by Finite Element Analysis, Functional anatomy and feeding biomechanics of a giant Upper Jurassic pliosaur (Reptilia: Sauropterygia) from Weymouth Bay, Dorset, UK, Devourer of Gods: the palaeoecology of the Cretaceous pliosaur Kronosaurus queenslandicus). Of course this isn’t to say pliosaurs are entirely inferior to mosasaurs nor can’t evolve ways to deal mosasaurs like what happened on Kaimere.

How do Greater and Lesser Katabo coexist where their ranges overlap? They seem to me they would be pretty aggressive with each other. Do Motomazor have different population differences (kind of like that if Orcas), or do females simply live by the coasts where males prefer more open ocean?
@TalesofKaimere11 ай бұрын
They sure are aggressive and greater will readily eat lesser. Lesser can fit in far smaller spaces and are much more abundant because of it. Reefs are safety from pelagic threats, and while greater katabo are larger and therefore dominate direct engagement and are less vulnerable to predators, lesser katabo are much more successful
