While the word Arvel comes from 'Fertile yet Dangerous Land' in the most common Arvelith language, this only applies to its humid eastern coast. To the west, deserts and hot steppes dominate. However, for a few months a year, the wind shifts and blasts the coast with storms, supporting a striking seasonal jungle.
Songs of the Inland Sea is the sequel to Tales of Kaimere! It is a nautical anthology, with all six short stories and novellas taking place in aquatic settings. There are heists on a ship, a desperate chase through a marsh, and a survival story from the perspective of a killer whale!

This monsoon forest is a very neat biome and I really like the animals showcased in this video. There aren't many giants that are able to live there but they still form a unique cast of beasts with interesting dynamics and adaptations for their environment. Well done, yet again! I've got a question though. Do you think the Darun of the Known World and this Western Carnosaur are in the same genus? Plus the way that you described this western Megaraptoran killing with bacteria is a total reversal of what we found out about Komodo Dragons on Earth. It used to be that they killed with septic bacteria, but now it's been found that monitor lizards in general have actual venom glands and the bacteria in the mouths of Komodo Dragons is more harmless if anything. Still, it's speculated that some dinosaurs could've had venom, or killer bacteria in the mouth, even T-Rex, so anything is possible.
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere 10 ай бұрын
Indeed both the darun and western carnosaur are in the same genus, Styraconychus. It was a fun reversal. Also inspired by bacteria in cat saliva. Not something we can readily know about fossil taxa, but makes sense as a supplement for a predator. Regularly preening their claws means the bacteria is also present there. They still usually have to kill conventionally, but if prey gets away, they can often circle back and finish them off pretty easily.

I know you don't really specialize in plant life much, but I could imagine something evolving like a "potato tree" living in an environment like this. The plant primarily lives underground during the dry seasons and stores its energy for massive growth spurts into large trees (many dozens of feet tall. Maybe partial diet of the giant camels, hugoldun, and other canopy feeding giants?) during the monsoon season... above ground growth dying off as the winds change direction. Some animals could have evolved to dig up these giant tubers to survive long treks between oasis, or even survive underground permanently, supported by tubers as the base of a type of subterranean habitat in the seasonal desert sands. Just a crazy 5 minute idea!

The Monsoon forest and wider Arvelith desert has quickly become one of my favorite habitats in Kaimere. I find it interesting that of the three Miocene predators harvested, only Amiphicyon exists today with both Epicyon and Barbourfelis going extinct since the harvest. Question : On the Western Arvel maps, we can clearly see that the Central Arvelith Mountains Channel (which separate the Highland from the Lowland) reach and touch the Moonson Forest (even more when it's the Rain season). And more important, completely split the desert that separate the Moonson Forest from the rest of Arvel. Giving that this part of the mountains more or less served as a "land-bridge" between the Moonson Forest to both the Highland and Lowland of Arvel equally, why there not so many animals using it to go-and-back at any moment at their will ? The Hedgeback could use it to go in the Highland were it can potentially established (locals Cockatrices species being ok to handle, zero permanent giant theropod, have fur to support cold, etc...). Sure, it will enter competition with Cave Lion, the only similar mammal sized predator that fitt more or less the same niche, but I think that it is more powerfull in term of muscle and bite to impose himself. Can also continue to be in good part a scavenger, being able to drive off all the others Highland predators such Cave Hyenas, Homotherium and Wolves. (Which however will give it to the Cave Bear which will loose another part niche that made his survival). And the Common Oliphaunt could use this land bridge to reach the Moonson Forest whithout being forced to travel by one of the two deserts. In addition that Elephants are said to be efficient in very barren mountains, whithout falling on the ground, in high elevation. Really, that there any Fauna Interchange thank to this "land bridge" would be an very weird oddity...

Random Question : 1 - Given that it is convergent to Giraffes, the Jessie Camel have, like them, the same problem to drink when it come to take water from an oasis ? 2 - Why the species that have their range in the Highland (a good one in addition, all the northen western part of this region, which isn't nothing), like the Jessie Camel, Helmeted Runnendrake or Western Carnosaur, don't spread in all the entirety of the Highland ? Why they didn't go farer ? Due to cold ? Competition with analogs/relatives not presented yet or the locals animals ? 4 - the Western Carnosaur could spread in the entire Highland and feed on the Highland Mammoth, Mooses and similar size preys, given it isn't at the Zentaur's level and come from a area that made him resilient to long period whithout eating ? 5 - the Blue Titan is the very last of the Titan Gardeners clade of Titanosaurs ? It's possible that others species that weren't outcompeted by the Armored Tillers clade could exist ? 6 - Since there were rhinos part of the Harvest from which most of the fauna of this region descend, was one species planned before being scrapped for a reason or another ? Or was just because this region wasn't good and viable enough for a rhinoceros species ? 8 - Great choice for the soundtrack as always ! 😊👍

Since you mentioned a Vampire being a member of the Assembly naturalists, I was wondering: do Vampires in your setting NEED human blood, or can they make due with feeding on any animal? And also, how often do Vampires need to feed & what happens to them when they go too long without feeding?
@TalesofKaimere
@TalesofKaimere 10 ай бұрын
A great set of questions! Vampirism is theorized to be at least partially influenced by the metabolism of heterotherms. If they want to be regularly active, not age, and utilize their supernatural strength and speed, they need a few meals of around a liter a day. If they drink nonhuman blood or don’t drink a few times a day, there’s a decrease in their energy. Eventually their bodies shut down. They don’t *need* sleep per se, but it’s a way to conserve energy. They don’t age if they regularly feed on human blood, and eventually look in their prime if they go back to feeding on humans after a hiatus. Most Assembly vampires do not feed on humans or if they do it’s voluntarily drawn or provided by bank or hospital surplus, and they age maybe one year for every ten that passes, and need to go into more regular stasis. They’re also a lot weaker. Still supernaturally strong, but can quickly exhaust themselves if they perform a few feats of strength. Abernathy goes through a lot of this in Sprint of the Seasnake

Is it because it's less efficient to form body armor in a habitat where food and nutrients isn't as readily available as in say, the Titan Gardens, or are they just unrelated to the other Titanosaurs that we've seen?

Mostly just not related. They have some very small osteoderms, but not something their clade invested in. Might have been a good adaptation, as some Kipourotitan osteoderms are hollow and store mineral supplements, but they are overall pretty expensive to grow.

They aren’t smart enough to conduct focused genocide. Sure, they kill young cockatrices when they find them, and sometimes seek them out, but the same happens to their cubs. They may be ecological rivals, but cockatrices have a much wider niche being able to catch and subsist on much smaller prey so while hedgebacks always compete with cockatrices, cockatrices don’t have to compete with hedgebacks, which is part of why they’re doing so much better

@@thedarkmasterthedarkmaster I have a potential sponsor for the subject and hopefully that clears some things up! It's not set in stone but I'm hopeful. A few quick things: 1. First Children are not and have never been Homo floresiensis. They weren't even inspired by them, they were inspired by fairies of European folklore. Homo floresiensis was a useful precedent in how they got small but that's about it. I don't believe I've said otherwise, but if I did it was likely misunderstanding a question someone asked. It is not known by the Assembly if the First Children were descended from Homo sapiens or erectus, but certainly not floresiensis, as it had not yet evolved by the time of that harvest. 2. Homo erectus was harvested from Southeast Asia 1.5 million years ago, not from Africa. They and H. sapiens harvested from the subject of this episode are the only human species with living descendants in Kaimere. If H. heidelbergensis or other archaic humans were harvested from other events, they left no descendants.

With such coloration, Abernathy's Horses must use it to pass as youngs Hugoldun that adults will instinctively protects, as well to came close to them permantly to use them as great predators repelent. Because whatever a Western Carnosaur, Silver Cockatrice or a Hedgeback will not, or at least think twice before attacking a full healthy Hugoldun species. Especially males. Of course, both the Abernathy' Horse and Hugoldun must be very often find togethers (as well than the others small animals of the forest with all the other big herbivores in the region. In such context, animals aren't picky), with the horses acting as watchers to alarm of a predator approach, and the Hugoldun acting as defenser. From this relationship, both received benefit !
