A playthrough of Sega's 1992 license-based platformer for the Sega Genesis, TaleSpin.
Played through as Baloo on the normal difficulty level.
When I decided to do a playthrough of this game, I was looking for a game like Greendog ( • Greendog: The Beached ... ). Something with summer vibes that was sunny, bright, and full of steel drums. After standing at the shelf weighing my options for an inordinate length of time, I finally decided on TaleSpin, and when I plugged it in, I was instantly taken aback by how perfectly it seemed to match what I was looking for.
As it turns out, there's good reason for the similarities: Greendog and TaleSpin were both created by Interactive Designs, the studio that became known as Sega Interactive once Sega of America acquired the company in late 1992, and who had made the TaleSpin ( • TaleSpin (TurboGrafx-1... ) and Darkwing Duck games for the TurboGrafx-16 a year prior.
In TaleSpin, as either Baloo or Kit (or both in the 2P co-op mode), it's your job to beat Shere Khan's company in a race that'll determine who will be awarded a permanent work contract with the city of Cape Suzette. To win, you need to collect ten pieces of cargo from eight cities across the world and safely deliver them to Cape Suzette within seven days, all while fighting your way through throngs of Don Karnage's mercenary band of air pirates.
The collect-a-thon style level layouts are less linear than Greendog's more straightforward designs, but at a glance, TaleSpin could pass as a Greendog spinoff. The slightly offbeat calypso rhythms, the pixilated green blotches of foliage, and the large and awkwardly animated character sprites all immediately feel familiar.
It doesn't feel as well put together, though. The hit detection is all over the place - sometimes an enemy dies in a single hit, and other times it takes several attempts before any damage registers - and the stages are full of objects and walls in the foreground that intentionally obscure paths and enemies. The 1P game is also virtually impossible to finish as Kit since the AI controlling the plane in the flying stages will constantly drag you through thick clusters of enemies, leaving you without any reasonable means to defend yourself.
The quality of the graphics and sound are pretty inconsistent throughout, too. The first stage looks reasonably nice, but the blue and green backdrop in the giant maze level about halfway through looks like it came straight out of an NES game, and the amateurish cutscenes look they were pulled from a bootleg cart, not a Sega-published game based on a Disney IP. Had the game come out in 1989, it would be easier to overlook the presentation's shortcomings, but it's all pretty underwhelming for a 1992 release.
Sega's TaleSpin isn't a disaster rivaling the likes of Fantasia ( • Fantasia (Genesis) Pla... ), but it is pretty disappointing. If you want a good TaleSpin game, you're much better off with Capcom's 1991 NES take ( • Disney's TaleSpin (NES... ).

TaleSpin can't draw a bead on any of Capcom's 8-bit Disney games, but if you're looking for a second-rate rehash of Greendog, I guess it'll suffice.

Of all the shows in Disney's afternoon programming block, the Bronze goes to Gargoyles, Silver to Darkwing Duck, and Gold to TaleSpin. And even then, nobody pulled off a halfway decent TaleSpin game. Of course, I never played Capcom's, but I hear that one is the weakest link of all their Disney titles.

Never even knew this game existed. I definitely know the one for NES since I owned it as a kid. This is a shock, between this Gargoyles, Darkwing, Chip'n Dale and Gummi Bears being my favorite Disney cartoons I pretty much knew about most the games, whether I was able to play them or not. This one just went right over my head all this time... and from what I'm seeing not much has passed me by except for the Sea Duck missions. Thanks for sharing!

It's sad that as awesome as the TaleSpin TV show was (it features Baloo the Bear from The Jungle Book in an urban-like setting), the video games were average at best. The NES game by Capcom is often regarded as an okay-ish shoot-em'-up that's probably Capcom's worst Disney game. However, it's also still considered the best game based on TaleSpin, as it was even included in The Disney Afternoon Collection. The Genesis game has a nice soundtrack and is at least playable compared to Fantasia, but it suffers from a plethora of problems; murky, unappealing graphics, terrible hit detection, enemies that are hard to kill but can easily attack the player, uninspired and recycled boss fights, cargo to collect each stage, a seven-day time limit, and an unsatisfying ending. The bottom of the barrel is the TurboGrafx-16 game by Interactive Designs. Despite having better graphics than the Genesis version, it has atrocious controls, severely faulty collision detection, and all-around uninspired gameplay, all flaws it shares with the even more notorious Darkwing Duck game on the same system, which was developed by the same company.

As Baloo himself would say, this is a solid drag. If this was a title that was rushed out to get to the 1990 premiere of the series it would be one thing. But Talespin was at least a year and a half on at this point if this was released in 1992. Goof Troop was right around the corner. I tried playing this once, and it was just Russian Bootleg quality From the design down to the music. It looks completely unofficial, and any resemblance to the show feels like it was described to the programmers by someone who caught half an episode at a relative's kid's birthday party.

_Definitely_ has to be an early Genesis game, but man, when I think back to playing games like _Sonic 2_ back in the day, that game seemed so much more... Vibrant in the spritework. This one looks a bit rough, especially compared to Capcom's offerings. Also, what's the deal with those crabs? They really seem to have a personal vendetta against Baloo!
@FlyingDuckMan360

@LPetal86 Oh, it was released in 1992. By this point, the Genesis was in steady competition with the SNES and many hit games were released that year. Besides Sonic the Hedgehog 2, there was also World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, Streets of Rage 2, and Taz-Mania.
