Thanks for the video, really helping me expand my Dutch beyond the simple Duolingo lessons! You asked for English translation help, so I thought I'd add something. A lot of the uses of Dutch words have equivalent old uses in English, so you might find them used that way in poetry or historical literature. Our languages share so many common roots! Examples: "You have but one choice" - meaning "You have only one choice" or "You have just one choice" (Elrond, "Lord of the Rings", JRR Tolkien); "Nay! We are but men" - meaning "No, we are only men" or "No, we are just men" (Tenacious D, "Tribute");

Trick to guess the Dutch counterparts of English words is to add - tie or sie at the end of the stem (it works in German Russian etc., as well.) Situation - Situatie Vacation - Vakantie Relation - Relatie Nation - Natie Inversion - Inversie Combination - Combinatie

Thanks for this! Super important topic here and I'm sure I will watch again. :) I wonder if you would consider doing a vocab video over 'laten'; I think that's another Dutch "specialty" :) As far as I know, there are common phrases like "laten zien" and "laten liggen" that translate to a single verb in other languages, but, from what I've noticed, when combined with a (any?) transitive verb, 'laten' has the general meaning of "to have/make someone do something". Even though it makes perfect sense, it's somehow still slightly confusing when I encounter it. Appreciate your clear speech and explanations!

10:01 we also use "but" in a similar way in English: " *But* for the rain, I would have left earlier" ("if not for" or "if it had not happened that...") And in some dialects of the southern US "I don't have *but* three dollars" (I only have three dollars). More literally I guess it's "I don't have *any more than* three dollars". So it seems that "Doe maar lekker normaal" could be said as "you *only need to* act normal", although we'd usually say "just act normal", "just" meaning "it's all you have to do".

I like the "acting" part of your videos, it is so funny! I've had one Dutch conversation class on iTalki last week that let me a little upset. The teacher was nice, but I did not know how to reply simple questions in Dutch and I got so frustrated. It's been like three years now that I study Dutch by myself. Sometimes I could understand the teacher's question, and others not even that. I don't know why my brain refuses to learn this language, kkk. Even though, I will keep on trying.
