Wole Soyinka, the Nigerian poet, playwright and activist was the first black African to be honoured with the Nobel Prize for literature in 1986. Soyinka turns 80 this week and continues to express his views as one of the most controversial writers of his generation. Deeply committed to social justice and the arts, Soyinka has been a thorn in the side of many Nigerian dictators - his outspoken activism landing him in jail and eventually forcing him into exile. Talk to Al Jazeera speaks to Professor Wole Soyinka, one of Nigeria's most prominent voices, about Boko Haram, religion, politics and the state of Nigeria today.

Prof. Wole Soyinka is a sage and he is projecting a nimble mind characteristic of Divinity-Philosopher Oduduwa. Africans in Africa and Africans in Diaspora should learn a lot from his repertoire of sagacity.

What a different country Nigeria, would be if they chose leaders like this. Sadly, in 60 years I’ve never heard of him to this moment. American media is too busy pumping its own agenda to enlighten us with the words of the wise.

Peoples are writing things out of ignorance, I wanna say don't judge Islam base on what an individual Muslim does or what Muslims community does, you can judge islam based on authentic sources that is the glorious qur'an and the authentic hadiths.

How does a secular government sponsor religious pilgrimages while others live in abject poverty? Nonsense! Btw, Fela was not a problem maker. He was a freedom fighter in every way as you're professor, just the methodology was different.

What I'm confused? You have heard of white South Africans and White North Africans right? He was the first black winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Changing this to West African is definitely not the same as first black winner. This is turning into a rant; I'll let you do your research.

By the time this interview was shot, I was a little boy. Well Mr wole Soyinka, boko haram has not done Nigeria any good. Now, Nigeria is more divided than what one can ever imagine. Nigeria is no longer recognized as a country to some Nigerians, in fact they call her zoo. All we are asking for is to divide Nigeria. The Northerners are wolfs and southerners are the lions. By what right does wolfs judge the lions?
