I love the drug analogy for this movie. She's struggling to feel anything good and is compelled to try dangerous things at a party, it feels great, keeps going with it, then encourages her friend to try it, her friend gets hurt, and the guilt makes her slip deeper into "using", as her friends turn on her and it's all she has.

Yeah! I was like omg why would someone do that for fun?! But as someone in recovery I was like well, why did I poison myself over and over for fun? It's a really good movie that makes you think and feel things.

My interpretation was that the spirit in Riley was never Mia's mother. Mia got possessed during her initial time with the hand and the demon in Riley was able to recognize that, so it took advantage of that and made her believe it was her mother so it could stay with Riley. However, Mia was likely the target all along.

The Issue is against that theory though is the spirit in Riley knew Mia's nickname, it's why Mia was convinced it was her mother, the spirit stated her nickname that only they two shared and then proceeded to say "I'm so sorry baby, please forgive me." alluring to her suicide, which later the water spirit possessing Mia taking her form said she didn't commit suicide which is disproven with the note Mia's dad gives her so if the spirit was trying to help saying to Mia "I'm so sorry baby, please forgive me" when Mia was in denial about the suicide seems like the exact opposite. It comes up again when Mia aks the spirit trying to pretend to be her mother: "Did you really kill yourself?" And the spirit of course says no to manipulating Mia, I think the Spirit possessing Riley was really Mia's mother (And it's why it tries to kill itself inside the body of Riley as Mia's mother committed suicide and the whole trauma of that after-death in a purgatory like state that would drive you mad makes sense) Second: The Spirits are random people, not all are evil or nefarious and since the hand can only summon one Ghost at a time it's highly unlikely the ghosts can communicate with eachother when pulled beyond the veil by the hand itself. Thirdly: We know or it's implied a Heaven-like state exists in the film's universe as her father is seen going to Heaven while Mia is stuck, it could also be connected with the horrible "If you commit suicide you cannot go to Heaven" statement, which is why Mia's Mom would be an option for the hand to communicate with.

I think it was when he was doing the monologue because she apologizes to her and says she didn't want to hurt her and she didn't want Mia to hate her for leaving. Implying that it was indeed on purpose. The other spirit wants Mia to believe it was an accident and to lean into her denial. That also explains when she got cut off by the other spirit that was after him for his body.

i think it was mia’s mum at first but when mia got close to riley and touched the hand the spirit that was still lingering in mia went to riley. this would make riley choking for a second time make more sense cause he was being possessed again.

I don’t think Mia was the target at all. The spirits just got lucky with a vulnerable vessel to get Riley. From the moment we saw that “hand” removing Riley’s AirPods, we were told who the target was.

I mean if she really didn’t want Riley to use the hand, she shouldn’t put her foot down as an older sibling (and as an older sibling I wouldn’t give a shit what my sibling would say they are not doing it and they are leaving the room) and tell her younger brother “no your not doing it and if you do I’m calling mom right now.” Like why didn’t she do that instead of leaving him in the room with people who want him to try it

Riley's entire scene was one of the hardest things i've eve had to watch. it felt like i was in the room with them but powerless to stop anything. i was legit screaming the whole time.

I really felt bad for the Main Character Mia, not only did she lose her Mom throwing her into sadness, and losing her father due to a fallout and only finding a home with her friends who she sees as family, then being manipulated by a Spirit pretending to be her mother, being gaslighted and losing touch with reality and then learning she had become the thing she feared most...nothing, throughout the movie once of the biggest things she feared most, talking about seeing herself in the mirror but not there, and when Mia realized she was dead, seeing her father go to Heaven while she was trapped in a Purgatory-like state was really sad.

Somebody has got to let all these characters in this A24 universe know that sometimes demons do not tell the truth. So much could be solved by them just taking a step back and being like maybe this isn't actually my dead relative? Maybe I don't need to be possessed in order to work through my trauma? What if I don't invite this evil into my body? Really just these simple questions.

A lot of real life situations would be avoided with exactly the same questions if everyone could be rational. But as we see in real life, people often behave exactly like the Josses, the Hayleys, the Rileys and the Mias' of the world.

Love that the kangaroo she couldn't kill was in the exact same spot that she died at. It's a very twisted take on Karma in that she didn't give that deer a quick death and instead let it suffer, and now, instead of a quick and peaceful death, she's forced to live in limbo to suffer for the rest of eternity

This movie was so fun to watch in theaters! Everyone gasped and went silent when Riley started smashing his face in. It just reminded me of Hereditary when Charlie got her head knocked off and the silence was loud from everyone during my showing. Definitely one of my favorite horror movies of 2023.

I like that since the movie is from Mia’s perspective we understand her, but yeah in the reality of the story Jade is the most logical and likeable character once shit hits the fan. Yes, she neglected her best friend and her younger brother to pay attention a boy, but she’s also 17. I won’t hold her so hard to that same way I won’t blame Mia for being insecure that her best friend is dating her ex boyfriend and still-crush. I think she even brings Riley to that first party just so she doesn’t have to third wheel to Jade and Daniel all night. And her want to accepted by her peers is relatable, at least to me.

So a couple tidbits about this movie: * The waterlogged woman that Mia sees is the one that enters her, and we can hear the water sound effects when Mia is possessed and whenever she is talking to her "Mom". Mia's mom's "spirit" looks more and more waterlogged the more we see her. * The spirit that possesses Riley is the one we see in the bed in the hospital. It's the spirit Mia while possessed says "He's behind you now...he'll split ya!" It's the spirit we see in the bed with Riley in the vision, holding onto him. Also good job at seeing how Jade pushed Mia. Not many catch that. Also Hayley's poor actor is going through it online, the movie was banned in Kuwait because Zoe Terakes identifies as non-binary.

i think I appreciate this movie more after seeing it a second time through y'all. I saw this in theaters. One funny little thing to me is the sound effects are nutsss like you know that pillow hitting scene? It was sooo loud, especially in theaters, I thought they were hitting her with rocks lmao. Someone on KZbin who reviewed it pointed out the "KZbin"-ness of the sound design, and since the directors were KZbin creators for years that makes sense! Did y'all notice how Mia's "mom" was actually the drowned lady? she got more and more .... wet-sounding.... and puffy and drowned looking throughout the movie.

I heard so many great things about this movie, and the film did not disappoint. I loved it! Regarding the highway scene, I think it was Mia who threw herself into traffic on purpose and not Jade pushing her. The whole point, in my opinion, about the kangaroo was putting it out of its misery instead of letting it suffer, which Mia couldn’t do. So now, at the highway scene, Mia is the one suffering, and she does what she couldn’t do before. She puts herself out of misery by throwing herself into traffic, killing herself to save Riley.

See my interpretation of the ending was that she took the spirit from Riley into herself and then threw herself onto the road to sacrifice herself to save Riley. She had nothing left at that point, her mum was gone, she stabbed her dad and everyone blamed her for everything.

This movie was a pleasant surprise. The trailers didn't do it justice and sold it as a horror "blockbuster", while it's a festival film way smarter than it was presented as. The way it deals with mourning and all it implies is really well handled, the characters are interesting (bonus point for having a cool nonbinary character!) ; overall it was a great experience seeing it at the cinema. The sound is also really well rendered, the sounds of impact are loud as they should be (you really do feel it in your skull.... at THAT moment....) Long story short, it was amazing and I'm so happy to see you guys are watching it!

My theory is the kid was actually letting Mia's mom in because she was apologising for what she did (take her own life) but then someone elses took in and that was the one who tried to kill the boy. And I think after that it was the woman of the beginning who pretended to be the mom because you never see her on focus and as the time goes by the body appears more bloated. I feel the dead people wanted Mia to kill the kid because then they can have him for real or at least his soul. (There's a part in the movie when it's said that if you die while possessed then they get to keep you) I also think Mia jumped at the end and was not pushed.

I think it was the Mom all the time, even when she was trying to kill herself, we know she committed suicide and I can easily imagine how you could go insane in that Purgatory-like state where time flashes by and reality sours, I think Mia's Mom said sorry to Mia and the "Please forigve me." before attempting to kill herself again only Riley was the one to suffer from it, then because he was taken over, the spirit who wanted him was able to Possess him too.

But I don’t know, the mom being waterlogged seems too intentional and the dad revealing the suicide note were meant to make us realize she isn’t really talking to her mother. It’s one thing if she has gone crazy in purgatory which is a cool idea, but they never say that or imply it, and if it was what they were going for they didn’t explain it well at all. The spirits lying and telling Mia that her dad isn’t really her dad also seems pointless if the mom is supposed to be real, and crazy? It’s lying to her very intentionally, and that being because of craziness doesn’t make sense. It’s just a lie, unless the mom’s spirit would have reason to hate the dad but she doesn’t. I like the idea that the spirits collected by the hands of the medium stay with it, and are the ones you end up speaking to when you use it. It would also thematically tie into Mia’s character if the motivation for the spirit is simply that it collects people because it is lonely. That would work if the spirit really was the mum, but I don’t see why she would get all water logged, trick Mia into killing Max, and just lie over and over if it really is the mum. It’s not really insane behavior just manipulative.

I saw a comment somewhere saying the creators or whatever confirmed Mia’s “mom” was the waterlogged demon/ghost that Mia encountered when she was at the first party. Notice the water sounds every time she’s around and how she just progressively gets more wet and waterlogged looking. And I think the guy that got stabbed in the beginning was right. The human body can expel them after some time and Jade saying that Riley getting better was proof of that. The reason her “mom” kept urging her to “help” Riley was because the demons were getting weaker and they wanted him to die so they could keep him (hence why every time he came to he’d try killing himself). I think they wanted him because he was young and innocent (I think about the baby being eaten and the little girl, too). Mia was vulnerable and easy to manipulate. It seems when the demons are allowed in, they get access to a lot of info to use (hence the ‘he doesn’t like when you touch him’ thing). And I think Daniel got the (second) worst experience because he’s a Christian boy and the demons were probably fully ready to fuck with him hard because of that.

The spirit that went into Riley was the 'old man' who Mia said 'he'll split ya!' when she was possessed by the drowned spirit in the beginning. Both spirits worked together to influence Mia and Riley in efforts to claim their souls (kill them).

Also, the drowned spirit was the one who pretended to be Mia in order to draw her in and keep her interacting with the hand. That's how they drove her to insanity so she'll kill Riley and ultimately herself. If you watch the film again, you will notice the water sounds when Mia interacts with her 'mum' and how she looks more wet and deteriorated with each interaction.

This movie is a MASTERPIECE. The “Hell” scene is prob my fave scene in a horror movie ever. It’s just so disturbing and gives me event horizon vibes.

I thought it was super interesting that they showed a version of hell and what would take place in it. a lot of times in horror (specifically possession) movies, the spirit/demon talks about someone’s soul being tortured, but they very rarely actually show it in the movie.

I read an interview with the directors, which said that Event Horizon was one of the influences. As another comment notes, the hell scene also had Society elements, but evidently it is coincidental because the directors hadn't seen it.

I think when Riley is first possessed it is Mia’s mum but then he is overtaken by a more vengeful spirit that wants to kill him to keep him in limbo/torture him for eternity

I personally think it was her mother at first, that's why she was loving and had personal things to tell her, things that only her mother should know. But later on, the drowned (watery) spirit replaces her mother and uses that connection to her advantage. You can even hear water droplets or like sloshing sound effect whenever the "mother" would show up in later scenes, indicating that it's no longer her actual mother.

No. I think the spirit got a read on her after she touched the hand by accident. Saw she'd lost her mom. And used it to her advantage. She just read Mia's thoughts. Her mom was never there. The hand isn't a channel to the afterlife. But a channel into the demon that controls it and all the spirits that fell for it's tricks. Mia's mom probably passed on like her dad after she committed suicide

I always assumed that at the end when she sees her dad walk out of the hospital and Haley and her family walk out they had been healed and went home. Leading to the thought was she the ones the demons really wanted. Remember hell takes the innocent and damaged.

At first I thought it was meant to be a side commentary on how much people are glued to their phones and always texting. When Mia was vulnerable and trying to open up to her friend, but her friend was giving her monosyllabic answers without looking her in the eyes, I felt like shouting “Talk to me”.

after sitting with it for a while I finally realized that Mia was targeted by the drowning woman and the old man. she stayed attached too long, so it figured out exactly how to trap her - by going after her Mom and Riley. and the old man wanted Riley, that's who walked in. by the end you can see the Mom is becoming more and more wet and bloated.

Nobody gets the ending, and it's so frustrating... Mia's spirit went back to the hospital after a lot of time had passed. It's pretty obvious: her father got better and leaving for home, the kid (I don't remember his name) recovered from his dreadful injuries and is also going home. And the hand is now someplace else, judging by the language, it could be Italy... All of this is a clear-cut indicator of the fact the a lot of time has passed since Mia's death
