I found it interesting that they said the spirits weaken over time, and near the end, Jade says on the phone that Riley seemed to be getting better and was more himself. At the same time, the spirit escalates things with Mia very quickly to trick her into killing Riley to "save" him. According to the movie, if you die while it's inside you, then it has you forever. That's what it wanted. I think if she had left it alone, the spirit may have eventually lost its grip.

One crazy detail about this film is there's hints about which spirits are haunting them. That waterlogged woman is who possesses Mia, and we hear the "water" sound effects during her possession, also when she's talking to her "Mom", and the Mom looks more and more waterlogged as time passes. The old man Mia sees in the bed is who is seen holding Riley in that hospital vision, and is likely the man possessed Mia was pointing out ("There he is/He's behind you. He'll split ya!"). And when you look close, you can see Jade pushed Mia into the road; she didn't jump, which is even more tragic. And the demons do not like the BF because we hear it mentioned he is a Christian...so many details

Think of it like addiction if she just left the hand alone the spirts lose connection just like addiction if you just quit eventually you will get batter you may withdrawal and takes time to get better but if you keep taking the hand you just get deeper and deeper and eventually Mia just was so lost she was being manipulated just like drugs slowly manipulate you as well. If you notice the fake mom slowly starts taking imagine of the drowned lady cause that's who it was since the beginning the old man in wheelchair that she saw in place of Riley was the spirit taking him manipulating her as well she was so deep all the spirits could talk to her manipulate her just like how they got her to stab her dad because her dad gave the spirit away as a fake and the spirit tricks her with more manipulation because she is so addicted basically she can't see pasted the clouds. Another detail that shows that the story has come full circle is the graffiti on the asphalt - the movie wants us to know that the place where Mia dies is the same place where she and Riley found the kangaroo. Also, the moment where the ghost of the little girl lets Mia in and plays the game in reverse... WOW. For what it's worth, I do believe that Riley was letting Mia's mom in, but she was forced out by a stronger, older ghost.
@courtkendell Жыл бұрын
i don’t think it was mia’s mom at all when riley let it in. the first spirit of the bloated drown victim woman that inhabited mia past the 90 seconds seemed to be the ghost manipulating her. we know that the spirits, once inside, know every little thing about a person, and can manipulate that. at the very beginning of the movie, duckett’s brother breaks down the door, duckett says something (like “mom says you hurt a lot of people”), and his brother responds with “mom’s dead, duckett”. i didn’t realize it at first until rewatching, but this was a huge sign that this is what’s happening to mia. we also hear the bloated dripping sounds throughout the film when mia’s “mom” visits her. i think it’s really just the bloated drown victim woman pretending to be mia’s mom.

dam u missed the whole plot, it was never her mother.....
@tyrbrelk8444 Жыл бұрын
I would agree that it was her mother at first. Riley's hesitance starts with him looking towards Mia as if for permission/recognition. Then when possessed riley starts stuttering got...got... he begins choking which has been a consistent sign of a spirit taking over the whole film. At least to me that implies another spirit forcefully took over in the middle, not to mention the foreshadowing that a spirit had been actively interested and following Riley since Mia's first turn. A ghost who'd "split ya" i.e. crackin his skull immediately.

SPOILER She lasted more than 90 seconds so the spirit was with her and with Riley they never blew out the candle out so it manipulated both and she did died and it went months since we see Riley leaving and that would take a long time to recover completely, time is different on the other side I guess. We don't know if she was pushed or she killed herself, I mean she was letting go of the wheelchair. This film was brillant and a sequel got greenlight so I can't wait!

They really messed up not following the rules that were established. The kids were messing around too much and when things got serious they just took too long to solve the issue at hand. Felt super bad for Mia and how she was pretty much alone in all of this with her grief.
@ScribStat Жыл бұрын
Watching back, if you look at the scene right before the car crash, you see "green" rush up behind them, and "white" hit the windshield. I'm pretty sure Jade shoved Mia to save her brother, because I don't see any real reason why Mia would kill herself at that point.
@arminarlert1953 Жыл бұрын

to answer your question: no, I would never in a million years try it or be anywhere near it. I've seen too many horror movies like this to not know better, lol amazing reaction guys! I appreciate your nuanced take on Mia. so many people give her a hard time, forgetting that she is a grieving teenager who had just lost her mother. sure, she made mistakes but she just needed help and unfortunately, she turned to addiction which just drove everyone further and further away. absolutely tragic. ❤
@cecollins689 ай бұрын
I agree never in a million years, if they pull something out like this at a party im at, thats my sign that the partys over and its time to leave, to add onto your comment I follow a lot of spiritual and paranormal channels and there's this concept of "the treshold" that the paranormal and other high strangeness seems to have to obey. these things can't start messing with you unless you give them permission to and what constitutes as permission is up to very vauge and up to loose interpretation which makes it very insidious (examples are dont answer knocks on doors in dreams or in the middle of the night) the running consensus seems to be if you want nothing to do with the paranormal then stay the f#$k away from the paranormal, dont even play around with it as a joke. the closest parallel to the movie are ouija boards, some of the most dangerous things you can mess around in this sense, you might get lucky and nothing happens or the spirit is harmless, but if your unlucky....well congratulations now your house is haunted, or worse you got demons running about ☹️

Saw this opening weekend and left the theater with an uneasiness that lingered for hours. A cool take on the extremely well-trodden possession trope. I enjoyed it. The spirits are interesting. We know some (if not all) of them are ghosts trapped the same way Mia was. But there are hints of something demonic. Others have already said it, but I'm almost positive that wasn't Mia's real mom. She took on the appearance of the waterlogged (foot-sucking) ghost after a while, and in that last close-up shot outside the hospital, when the ghost puts her hands on Mia's shoulders, you can see what looks like the tips of claws poking out from under her fingernails. I think that each time someone messes with the hand, the ghosts/demons/whatever try to add to their number by having someone die while possessed. This time it could've been Mia or Riley, it didn't seem like they cared which. What's a gut punch is that if Mia had just waited, everything might've resolved itself. Duckett's brother said the ghosts work themselves out of your system like a drug after a while, and during Mia's death montage, we see Riley get better and leave the hospital. The spirits tried to convince Mia that killing him was the only way to free him, but it would've condemned him forever - which is where Mia ended up instead.
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
I love the way the spirits manipulated not only Mia but the audience as well! You really don't know until the end when all the pieces click together and you realize she's not herself anymore and they are definitely up to no good. After the commentary we literally just sat and talked a little bit more about the film. And we both had the same feeling you were describing. This film is not overly gory or super dramatic but something about it is just gut wrenching and leaves you with a nauseating feeling. That's how you do horror!

Love this movie so much. It really does show how selfish teenagers are. The other teens in this movie are selfish for no reason other than they get attention from doing these “parties” but Mia on the other hand, I personally think she went there hoping she would see her mother. I think people go in so hard on Mia BUT we must remember she’s just a teenage girl who is grieving extremely hard, terribly depressed probably, and feels so alone. Grief can make you do things you normally would never do. She would do anything to hang on to her mom for even just a second. I’m an adult and I can’t say that I wouldn’t do the same thing if my mom passed away. Imagine someone you love dies and you just found out you have a direct line to see/talk to them, would you not be tempted to hang on to that? It’s just common human selfishness and poor choices resulting from her trauma. I think she’s just a sad character, not unlikeable. That was my character analysis about Mia that absolutely no one asked for! 😂😭 I just feel for the girl dude idk why.

One thing that blew my mind about this film is that the directors fought for Sophie to play Mia. Higher-ups didn't want her to get the role since she was a no-name they figured it would be harder to market the film. Instead, Danny and Michael Philippou took a budget cut of 1 million dollars to make sure she stayed the lead actress for the film. They knew she was Mia when she auditioned! Also, I love how much you all NAILED analyzing this film. Definitely a new subscriber! And I agree Hereditary was my favorite films and when I saw this one it shot right up on my list next to it. If you all haven't already I would LOVE to see you all check out Bones and All it also joined my top films alongside these. Black Phone is another surprisingly good one. I'm going to check if you've reacted to either yet.

I think at first it was her mom, cuz when she took control of Riley’s body at first and was talking to Mi. She was saying I’m sorry i miss you, i never meant to hurt you. Kinda like saying sorry shit left them and killed herself. Wanted to say more but got interrupted since Riley went for too long then the drowning lady thats Mi saw when she did and went over 90 took over and made him hurt himself .Then thru out the whole movie it’s the person not the mom. Towards the end she started saying i didn’t kill myself youre dad is lying , contradicting to what she said before. Slowly and slowly it started to look like the mom and becoming more like the lady who drowned. By how she looks and the way she sounds. She was saying “I’ll take care of him” (talking about Riley) then at the end when Mi gonna throw Riley to freeway , her mom finally looked way more like the drowning lady then instead of saying I’ll take care of Riley , she said “we’ll have him forever” that’s when Mi realized that wasn’t her mom and jumped herself.

The spirits weaken over time, and you'll note that the drowned (?) spirit that first appeared turned into her mother and couldn't maintain the mask for the duration of the film. This is shown by the slow progression of the gurgling of liquid, the mother seeming more and more wet, and, in the last act, her face contorted and bumpy.

Yesss!! When Mia first connects to the spirit you can hear the sound of water in the background, that's why we think it was the same spirit that ended up haunting her. It got a taste and wanted more 😭

I think the initial summoning using the hand reaches out to people in purgatory, but not hell, and going over the time limit thins that veil and lets in hellish occupants. And they depict purgatory as just infinite nothingness until you randomly get called up via the hand game or some other means of seance I imagine. Mia straight up bent neck lady’d herself. This film covers a lot of things; grief, unaliving oneself, addiction, mental health crises. I think it's safe to say that she was only speaking to her mother for the first fifty seconds; and after that, the veil thins and hellish spirits had her. Everyone should also know by now; that you NEVER refuse the animal call to action in an A24 movie. Once she left that kangaroo she sealed her fate.

Would I take the hand? Um, no. Not only would I not do it, I wouldn't even spectate. Unless there's a medium present, none of those kids could see who or what they were letting in. I've had experiences with spirits who aren't evil and I'm not even a medium. That's unsettling enough. I'm not about to mess around with unknown spirits and possible demons.

Real life situation if it presented its self I would personally not do it nor would I stick around and watch it, the movie is one thing, but in real life, I would walk out the door I don't care how many of my friends tried to bully me or made fun of me, I would not do it.

Someone recommended you guys to watch Gonjiam Haunted Asylum, and I completely second it! I also would love it if you guys watched The Wailing. It's a very creepy and complex Korean horror film. I would love to hear your thoughts and theories about what happened in it! Thanks for the great videos, as always!

I haven’t seen a new movie in years, I get the pieces from reactions lmao then I watch them eventually when I can rent it on KZbin but I’ve been dying to see this one so thank you for being my vessel 😅 it also helps so I don’t have to watch the scary movie alone lol

It's hilarious that the 17-year-olds are played by 25-year-olds and the 14-year-old is played by a 16-year-old. Movie teenagers never look like reality 😂

I was watching Sicario 2 yesterday, and like the first movie, they have a shocking scene right from the start. It grabs your attention right away, so you want to keep watching to see what happens. This movie also had that shocking start, at the house party.

If you look, the black girl touched and held onto the hand too while the brother was speaking to her as her mother. maybe that helped her ghost come into him or open the door that the hand opens into the otherworld even wider and any number of ghosts came through and got to him.

Would I do it? Now, no. 15-20 years ago, college and just after, definitely. Frankly, I feel like I just carry too much darkness because of my mental illness that I might be too vulnerable.

"Talk to Me" and "When Evil Lurks" were the best horror movies of 2023, for very different reasons. Both are brutal, well written, and such great examples of how the genre can elicit such extreme feelings.

Its not just Mia' fault because she was irresponsiblen in letting Riley take part. She also prevented the hand from being removed at the agreed upon time.
