Idk because the bible is not a reliable source of information. There are good human interaction stories and scary monster stories, like fairytales, that ppl have been telling for thousands of years trying to explain life and nature the best they could.

A simple read of “Charles Darwin” on Wikipedia would inform Slim or any of the “Darwinism” critics that the man was born into a time and social position that would have affected his views on social issues. Nevertheless, Darwin was a strong proponent of emancipation and his journeys on the HMS Beagle informed him that natives across the world were capable of achieving equal intelligence. That some folks used his theory to promote racism and eugenics in no more Darwin’s fault than blaming the atomic bomb on the discovers of nuclear fission. I did not understand why Eric seemed to want to distance morality from evolution. To me human evolution explains very well why we care if our neighbor is stolen from or killed. We are a social species and our group and our personal genes survive better when we look out for the well being of all.

Moral Laws evolved just like every other survival mechanism. As Social Primates, our very survival is dependent upon our being socialized, and integrated into larger social groups. Guilt feelings are an important mechanism which enhances not only the survival of the individual, but contributes to the survival of the overall group. Sigmund Freud was the first scientist to describe the layered construction of the Human Psyche, and it's various functions. The Three Layered Psyche explains, in a sober, and keen eyed scientific way, how social interaction works, and how it contributes to societal harmony, and productivity. With Freud, we witness the first treatment of the examination of Human Behavior, as taken out of the realms of philosophy, and religion, and made a part of scientific inquiry. No "Spirit Beings" handed down laws for proper behavior to humans. Humans themselves made all the laws. Humans wrote all the moral codes. Humans are the final judges of human behavior, not any "Super-Natural Spirit Beings".

If he would actually bother to READ Darwin's book, he would see that there is no discussion of humans within it, so the subtitle has nothing to do with races of human and superiority. I think it's clear from LATER writings of Darwin that he may have had some unpopular ideas in this regard, but at the same time, he stood against slavery at a time when others were using the idea that Africans were less than human to justify the slave trade, so in terms of evolution, no, this original book and the theory of evolution he initiated were not racist ideas. Some others later used them to be this way, something called Social Darwinism (also Eugenics), but that's not at all the same thing.

That is actually a pretty interesting thing, in my studying becoming a teacher I had to do a seminar on how morality develops with age. The probably biggest theory is that it develops in up to 6 steps (the model from Kohlberg). In earlier life we decide about right an wrong mostly if not entirely out of arguments from personal benefits. Like in getting rewards or punishment. Later on we switch to more sociel things, such as the view of other people on the action and the law and stuff like that. This is also tied to the fact, that children must develop the awareness, that other people perceive the world from an other point so they won't know exactly the same things. They can't see or hear the same things is the basis here. Therefore you first just obey your parents, because you know you will get punished if you don't and you don't know at first, that your parents don't know what you know. You realize that they don't and you switch to a wider view, you can benefit from breaking a rule, because you don't always get punished for the rulebreaking. Later on your brain develops the more abstract thinking which leads to you beaing able to see everything again on a wider scale and you can understandy why certain things are forbidden by cultural norms or thr law and then you will try act according to this. There are 2 more steps which look even behind the social constructs but especially the last one is almost never observed why the model is critized and there are attempts to improve it more, but the basic points still seem to hold true.
@anthonynork9718
@anthonynork9718 5 жыл бұрын
@Dirk Knight might be, I haven't read nearly enough to say that conclusively. What I wrote was more like an idea, definitely I'm not aware of research that would back it up or refute it. The kids don't "learn from punishment" but rather act to avoid punishment or get rewards and it is the foundation at this age for their thinking of right and wrong.
@anthonynork9718
@anthonynork9718 5 жыл бұрын
@Dirk Knight society is formed by individuals... You can't have certain things until an individual has certain abilities. For example: You can't lie without being aware that others know other things than you. Also you can't have empathy without being able to either take the others perspective or having the cognitive ability to think about is like "I don't want this happening to me, therefore..." Morality is often a pretty vaguely defined term... Depending on the definition you buy into it, since one common definition is just something like "rules in the society on how to act"...

Morality is the term we use to represent the rules of behaviour, particularly as it affects people. But we also include the rules regarding the behaviour towards our fellow creatures. If morality came from God, why do priests and nuns do bad things. I had worked at a school run by Sisters of Mercy nuns and a cover up needed to take place so a written false report was made by the school leaders to discredit me and pass blame to me. At a later stage the head nun must have felt guilty that I was damaged by lies so she wanted to convert an immoral into a moral. She told me about white lies. She did not admit to a lie or say what the story related to but it was obvious. She said that if a lie was for the overall good of the community it was a white lie. Maybe look at it from a different viewpoint? The church with Pope, priests, nuns, is totally a manmade construct. It is serving to build wealth and power. Hence, you can expect no morality from the people involved. Less so from those in charge maintaining the illusion.

@@russellbrooks23able I agree with what you said that from those in charge you can expect no morality. But I think there are some of the lower level who joined the orders because they believed in morals. About a month ago some one broke into my car and stole the battery. That did not upset me much. But you would think that the turd would have had the morals to spend a minute to undo the clamps rather than cut all the wires which cost me hours to fix. A question: If Slim is looking back at earlier civilisations and saying they acted in an immoral way, he is claiming that our current society is able to define what is moral and what is not. Yet what if a future society looks back at us and claims we are acting in an immoral way? Such as, for instance, allowing a massive imbalance of wealth and opportunity between most of the population and a favoured few? What we currently believe to be moral may be viewed in future as immoral. In other words, morality cannot be objective. And it is arrogant of us to claim that it is.

13:25 He asked where morality comes from. She explained the most logical and rational cause for morality. He says he doesn't care what she thinks. Wilfully ignorant much? Also, Eric is a bit off on the morality and evolution thing imo. I agree with Jamie in saying that as we evolved into and as a society our morals and ethics also evolved and became more complex. From cavemen and cavewomen to functioning societies over hundreds of thousands of years. Our morals did literally evolve.

Even other animals have a moral code, you know the animals that god gave us to use and abuse because we are special. Morality is innate and the only difference is we write our moral codes down and then religious con artists pretend god did it to gain control over the weak minded. Politicians use morals to control and subjugate and society use morals to force contrition. I have no god, I live my life with no need for a god. I know what is right and wrong and do not need anyones elses moral code that has been formed into a club to beat others with or justify murder, genocide and hate.

We haven’t always had the bible, but people have had a moral code of ethics since the Stone Age. Our survival depended on mutual cooperation, which in turn led to our feelings of love, compassion, and empathy. It is these traits that most of us base our morality on. Things like not stealing, committing murder or telling malicious lies are the natural result of having these character traits. I don’t see any reason for a god being responsible. If that were true, would every theist who lost his faith suddenly became an immoral monster? Wouldn’t the prisons be filled with atheists? Our morality comes from within ourselves and the values we hold to be important. They are not external and contingent upon any outside force like a god.

Morality is an assessment each person makes. Don't confuse this with Ethics, which is your society's agreed upon morality. Each person's morality is strongly influenced by the ethics of the society they grew up in, but it rarely exactly matches. That's why societies have laws to enforce their version of ethical behavior on its members.

So all this talk you have to be a Christian in order to get good morals from God is just beyond crazy and ridiculous. Morality comes from within, and it has nothing to do with sin. Call it evolution or creation, but morality is built within our emotions. It's called the guilty feeling. (How) it evolved or (how) it was created is irrelevant, the point is we have morality and we should definitely let morality guide us as a deciding group? (IMO) We don't need God or books to teach us morality, we know if we are hurting someone and we know that it isn't right. And if you don't know those things, you don't fit in with a moral social existence. Morality (should?) triumph over immorality, but not because of God. Because we should strive to be good people for the benefit of the survival of our species. The purpose of Morality is so we don't kill each other to the point of extinction, it isn't a free pass into Heaven.

To these people murder seems to be their best and only option? When someone is breaking into your house with every intention on killing you to take what it yours, killing seems to be the only option for both parties involved in that situation? People get killed everyday for lying. You can assure me all you want that there are better ways than murder to deal with these types of situations, but reality proves everyday that when the human mind is pushed to its breaking point, murder is the first thing humans use as a defense mechanism.
