I want to say 'buy an electric car', but at the moment they are just too expensive. Even second hand EVs are increasing in price at a fast rate. I assume that this is because more people are buying EVs, which is great for the planet, but not great for me. I'll have to wait a couple of years until very cheap Chinese EVs bring all EV prices down. I think in the near future (1 - 2 years) an Air Source Heat Pump might be the one thing that is attainable for me. Hopefully, after that, I'll be able to by and drive an EV. I'm 70 years old so I hope that purchase date will be sooner rather than later!!! Great applause to Robert and the excellent FC team for this groundbreaking video. I think all of the delegates to COP26 should be compelled to listen to young people when it is them who will have to deal with our lack of action for so many years. Thanks guys and thanks Robert. Get a 10kWh house battery min... Everyone gets one... That way solar, hydro and wind can be stored. Charge the battery at the low rates when there's lots of cheap electricity. Cheaper bills... Most people only really care about the cost. I feel that would have the biggest impact. Forget air source heat pumps That is unless you have a house that was made for it. To many bad points Thermal mass storage boilers are where it will go. (ZEB) get as much solar as you can get on your house. Forget net zero its not going to happen by 2050. Many of the so called "experts" care only about PROFIT. This climate change is one of the biggest scam ever. They say it's the end of the World which means we should care more about fixing the issue instead of caring to make profit. In reality, while the slaves will spend more money and their time "to save the planet", the masters will make more profit. I'll give as example the person at @9:00. The girl asks very clearly, how the people are incentivized to use more the public transportation, and the guy avoids the answer. I always said the public transportation and the car parkings outside the city should be free. That's why we pay taxes. People will drive to the city, leave thir cars in those FREE (I mean, paid by our taxes) parkings, then either go by bike, scooter, walking, bus, etc. @24:00 excuses for the elites. EVERY time you can find excuses; it's sad when the peasants accept them. UK is not a country of the people; UK is a country of peasants ruled by the masters who through corruption and greed now try to destroy the remains of the middle class.

@@sandersson2813 the thing about an EV is that once you have one, you won’t want another car, so that cuts down emissions over time. They are not a complete answer, but they do neutralise the consumption of cars and stop emissions over time. They also cut out nasty pollution in cities. So on average, they are a better choice. We will need a blend of technologies and natural choices and environmental work to make things work. An EV is a good start. Or just rent one or use an Uber EV in the cities. Great episode and excellent to give young people a voice. The experts were a little more of a mixed bag though. The UCL researcher wandered all over the place giving not very clear answers. Why was the first and seeming worst impact of global warming death of the coral reef? Surely flooding, unlivable areas because of extreme heat, and migration are the critical impacts with death of the coral reef being a consequence? I'm not trying to minimise the concern of how global warming is going to affect nature, just that she didn't seem to have a very clear message of what the risk to us and the world was. And the guy asked about buses and planes made no mention of hydrogen which, I think, has got to be part of the energy mix because it is so much more energy-dense than batteries.

Whilst it's great to have a simple slogan like "Stop burning stuff!" it should also apply to "burning" fissile material in a nuclear reactor, which of course leaves very long lasting contaminated waste for which there is no effective and safe disposal process. The nuclear power industry is reliant on massive subsidies, and always under-performs, yet the UK continues to build ridiculously expensive nuclear power stations. I love the fact that all these politicians have to be really careful what they promise at Glasgow, since environmental groups now have a successful tactic of prosecuting individuals for not fulfilling such promises, leading to the mothballing of newly built Dutch coal-fired power stations, for example.

*Thought experiment* What if we imagined all of humanity living on a spaceship instead of a planet. This may help people grasp the idea that resources are finite and that maintaining proper atmospheric levels is of the utmost importance. I think it's just too difficult for people to perceive how we're changing our climate and many look at our vast planet and think it can provide infinite resources. Maybe a change of perspective would help, no one would argue that resources are not finite on a spaceship. In this scenario, I believe people would be much more willing to share resources, reduce waste, and just be more mindful of their actions.

Solar is great, I know I had 8 panels on a previous house, but only when it's sunny or at the least light. Robert's introduction included the detail that, while the number of EVs has gone up remarkably in the last decade, the aggregate power consumption has gone down. This suggests that the boogeyman of "not enough power if everyone switched to EVs" is at the very least subject to few modifying conditions. Like how much home solar installed. An excellent example of what is needed to educate, not just the young, but the wider public. However, experts should not flinch in delivering the unvarnished truth when it comes to expected climate impacts. The response to the question about how the Earth would look in 2080 was weak. The public need look no further than the 2021 Chatham House Risk Assessment for an answer. On our current trajectory, humanity’s prospects within several decades are much less palatable than Helen Czerski would have her questionner believe.
@DavidKnowles03 жыл бұрын
An if Chatham House Risk Assessment is wrong it will be use as reason not to take action in the future, that the risk one take about making predictions about the future. An that why scientists should never go for the absolute worst possible future because you are almost certainly setting yourself up for failure. Take coral reefs for example, yes they could be extinct in 2080 apart from small patches but there actually a bit of evidence now coming along that show many coral reefs can actually adapt to live in higher temperatures.

To be truly effective this needs to be escalated to a much more fundamental and global level. Population growth must be stopped - maybe even reduced. Our expectations of a continually improved standard of living must be stopped. Our belief that we have a right to fly around the world for our own enjoyment must cease. I'd love to see a legislatively mandated ban on the sale of 2nd ✋ ICE from roughly 2038-40. We need to remove some of their value as an asset which would make people think twice about continuing with their usage, make switching to an EV a logical choice & drive the transition of transportation that much faster. Otherwise without real world negative incentives people's behaviour won't change & they'll just stick with what they know & feel comfortable with.

You fail to acknowledge that the state has a continuous stream of revenue by selling the fuel. Already an EV is not an affordable option; if these taxes are included now in the cost of energy, people will find buying an EV even less affordable. The solution is cheaper EVs: give to any Joe the option to choose between a £7500 ICE car and a £7500 EV (same volume, same performances) and it's a no brainer.
@pinkelephants14213 жыл бұрын
@@hal6702 Definitely agree about cheaper EV's. The Chinese auto manufacturers are coming and will frighten the life out of most EV manufacturers. UK has 1,000's of Km's of terraced 🏘️, hectares of commercial and industrial rooftop real estate + 1,000's of hectares of parking especially at out of town shopping centres & trading estates. Would take a fair bit of courage on the part of any government to suggest, persuade & implementation of solar grid tied ⚡ generation; Project Solar Streets. Because we're talking about private property, a national referendum on yay or nay most likely needed before legislation of mandatory inclusion in National Grid & or something along the lines of compulsory land purchase. But if, in the aftermath of COP26, UK's vulnerability to geopolitical silly buggers by Russia & high gas prices, & if property owners, particularly 🏘️ owners, were offered choice of incentives, it might fly due urgency of climate change prevention & mitigation. Hell, the Tories might even be popular for doing something right for a change! 😆🙃 By incentives I mean: free insulation, glazing upgrades, subsidised heat pumps, 🏘️ 🔋, driveway/on-street charging infrastructure or maintenance on that portion of the roof used for ☀️for 25-30yrs; but it would be a choice not a free for all. Radical approach but crucially, could serve as a replacement for lost revenue to the Exchequer from fuel duty & Nth Sea O&G; it would generate vast quantity of ⚡, far & away more than UK needs. Export via current & future already planned undersea interconnectors to EU, assisting them with their decarbonisation & alleviate need for do much 🔋 storage in UK. The one change I would like to see is people making rational arguments rather than having nieve children make emotional arguments. One of the children was scripted to actually say they were sick of talking about it. It's pretty much an acceptance of failure of an argument when you dont want to talk about it.

No one was scripted… they just read their own questions.

They are sick of talking about it because that all the likes of Boris and co do, talk, talk about climate change and how bad it will be but when it comes to actually making changes, they do things like cut taxes on short haul flights, implement a decade freeze on fuel duties. The opposite of what needed to tackle climate change.

Totally agree, Everyone's waiting for someone else to sort it for them. I'm not putting in £40k of green tec for the planet. I'm doing it so I don't have to pay high gas and electric bills. After 10 years I would have payed for it anyway. (£6000 a year bill)

@@hal6702 We’ll see if it’s fear mongering (it’s not). I’ve been following scientists who tell it like it is for years, so I would suggest educating yourself properly. Paul Beckwith and Kevin Anderson in particular. As well as meteorologists like Scott Duncan.

@@hal6702 You don’t have to pay anything. We solve this by reducing consumption, which means just buying less, doing less. It’s pretty easy. And by refusing to partake in the economy the way the government wants, GDP will drop and then they’ll panic. Which will hopefully lead to an ousting of them and a new system being formally introduced. And by the way, the domestic flying thing isn’t just about rich people. The “peasants” also fly domestically because it’s cheaper than taking the train.
@hal67023 жыл бұрын
@@christill I support "reducing the consumption", but we have to be realists and agree that it will take time to convince the majority of people. Regarding the flying, as a leader you MUST be an example (without compromise).

"No more politics" - are you suggesting we'd be better off with a dictator or going back to an absolute monarchy? Bizarre comment to add. Also you'll have to forgive me if I'd rather politicians were the ones that effected the biggest changes in society going forward. Letting corporations get away with doing what they like is what has got us in to the climate crisis to begin with.

@@Boopop1024 Behave Tom, its not companies that are to blame for the human element of climate change it is the demand of you, me and everyone else to improve our standard of life that has made the contribution. Stop trying to blame other companies when it is YOUR demand which has driven it. That's the problem with climate hypocrites, they always look for others to make change and want to blame everyone else for it, rather tham take responsibility for their own actions.

@@sandersson2813 Jog on, BP, Shell etc have known about climate change for decades and have sought to bury and/or discredit it and hide it from the public at large. I do not drive, I consume very little red meat, and I don't go on flights, so careful who you call a climate hypocrite pal. European cars =1% of global co2 and GLOBAL air travel is 2%, which isbthebsame as running the internet, so youre patting yourself on the back for 3%?😂 😂 Im not a denier, im just realistic how much we rely on fossil fuel and how much longer we will need it for.
