So they are more closely related than humans are to the animals human commonly eat (cows and chickens). Going by evolutionary time seagulls eating chicken is probably about the moral equivalent of humans eating tree shrews (not the "true" shrews, but the animal closely related to primates, last common ancestor 62 million years ago) but not as bad as eating a lemur (LAC 45-50 million years ago).
