Very true in the ancient days we Polynesians used the latex to snare birds in a non lethal way, and the inner bark was used to make a traditional cloth we cailled kapa. Also the leaves were used to wrap food to put in the ground oven, we used the pounded fruit for not just adults, but for babies and the elderly and sick! It's a very beloved and cherished tree in Hawai'i and Polynesia.

Wow! As a child, I ate breadfruit until I was around 14 years old and never knew about the nutrientional value until I listen to this interview. Breadfruit grow wide in my home town in Southeastern Liberia. I am now motivated to start a breadfruit farm in the nearest future. Thanks a lot to Dr. Laura Roberts Nkrumah for sharing her knowledge about this beautiful fruit.

My husband is African,, i am Caribbean, when i visited his country i saw 4-5 breadfruit trees on the coast ,3 hours from the largest city I was so so happy to see them,,and believe me i drove to the capital 4 hours away unoccupied land,on each side of the high way ,no breadfruit trees to be seen,,i could not believe that bread fruit was not everywhere, in this very tropical nation,,it has such a huge nutritional value ,and when i retire there i definitely want to propagate this breadfruit. his brother has 40 acres of land, and i will plant a few trees there plus the land i am planning on buying i will grow much more,,,,and introduce to the community,,he did say as a child he did eat breadfruit,, but infrequently...

I applaud this for the reason that you did this deep dive with the knowledge doctor. Cooking videos are great but food science and history adds an understanding and appreciation for cooking. Having that we may find our cooking improving because we may be better able to innovate in the kitchen.

You have to try breadfruit pounded and fermented slightly. It's so GOOOOOOOOD it's how we eat it in Hawai'i. We also eat it baked, and fried as well. When I visited Jamaica I saw so many breadfruit, I was so happy as I haven't indulged in years! Breadfruit with fish is okro is life!!! I even took some home! Now I'm so happy that we have it now in Seattle!! It's great with pork, or anything fatty, fish, taro greens, oh yes, tomorrow I think I'll be getting some!!

Food security is so important. At the beginning of the pandemic we saw what can happen when food distribution is disrupted. Growing our own food and having enough to share was so helpful . And people shared extra seedlings with each other. Even the government gave away pumpkin, squash and papaya seedlings.
@binfacelardgod1906
@binfacelardgod1906 3 жыл бұрын
I hope the people who were given the seedlings 🌱, put them to use. Out of small things big things grow. I am currently trying to grow Jamaican pumpkins 🎃 from seedlings here in the UK. I have chickens so I am trying to keep them away from my vegetables by a gate. Tomatoes 🍅, potatoes 🥔 and onions are also growing. I do not think it is quite warm enough here to grow Breadfruit unfortunately.
@farisasmith7109
@farisasmith7109 3 жыл бұрын
@@binfacelardgod1906 I think most people did put them to good use. I hope that even when thing go back to "normal" people continue to grow some of their own food. We shouldn't wait until a emergency to be self sufficient. A very smart man said growing your own food is like printing your own money! I believe that to be true.

In my country there are so many kinds of breadfruit. There is uluma'a, aveloloa, puou, ma'afala, sanosano, etc, and each has a distinguish taste, shape and color that tells what breadfruit you're talking about. The popular way of cooking breadfruits in my culture is baking or boiling, however, frying method is used more for left over boiled breadfruits. Anyway, Great video, thanks for sharing.

Breadfruit punch is very tasty. It is made with the ripe ones. Here is the resipe. Boil one or two, it depens on the amount of punch you are making. After finish boiling, you allow to cool. You now strip off the skin, remove the inside then cut them in pieces. Blend the pieces by adding water to get the thickness. To have the punch, you add sweetened milk, nutmegs vanella eggs ifso desired, a bottle or two of stout, and two servings of white overproof rum. Then blend to taste.

@@pastryshack551 , I am from India and I have this plant in my house for the last 100 years. The old one gave way to a new one. The new one is about twenty years old. Sometimes it is available in market. I am vegetarian and we use bread fruit as a vegetable using in many types of side dishes. We also make fried chips. They say, it goes well with lamb or other non veg. dishes. This plant is very difficult to grow. Sometimes, a plant grows from the shoot of mother plant. This is the only source of new plant. Airlayering is uncommon in our area. We know that the plant is foreign to our land, but grows in very humid conditions. Most Indians are not aware of this fruit and its use. I was expecting cuisine varieties from this fruit.
