Jessica really nailed those 80s tom fill faces. They just don't sound right unless you bite your lip.

The best part is Jessica having fun playing the song.

The drums are iconic in this song for a reason, and I think you've really demonstrated that here.

I was just listening to them this week and wondering if they'd done an episode on their sounds! The White Stripes always got amazing room sounds, especially on My Doorbell

I remember when I first heard that song, from the car stereo of my aunt's brother. I was a little boy and it scared the crap out of me, but lo and behold I became a professional drummer and am still playing and teaching in my 50s. Burning Down the House must have made an impression!

Great video! Would love to hear you guys tackle something by Peter Gabriel. Especially his 80s work. It’s full of some amazing drums!

To me, the toms make the percusion element and even the whole song. That was Steve Scales and I never realize that until I saw the movie of Stop Making Sense. In fact, all of the percussion parts that really stand out for me from Talking Heads was Steve Scales.

Wow I dont know where in the fuck you guys came from, but this was the most indepth strait to the point no frills, but professional looking, and well explained mix break down Iv ever seen. It was honestly wild and I had no idea this simple song was acctualy so complicated.

Someone really needs to do an in-depth video on the synth parts from this song. The synths on Speaking In Tongues generally are fascinating, really very different from what everyone else was doing at the time.

Really interesting! At the time I just assumed the tom fills were Simmons, though in retrospect they sound nothing like it. I guess with all the processing it kind of blurs the acoustic and the electronic. While they were no longer working with Brian Eno, some of his influence might have carried over.

legends. thanks. How about some of Beck/Waronker's drumming... esp the massive tom sounds on 'Waking Light'...?

I feel like you guys have already done Phil Collins but I can't find it..? In The Air Tonight is perhaps too obvious - my standout is Abacab for drum tone. The ride bell sound is killer on that. And of course there's the early prog sound.

I went looking in my attic for toms. Turns out all I had were Thoms. Tried hitting them with a drum stick but they have no tone and apparently no sense of humor. My battery charges are pending.
