Great info. One of the things that I think makes the old blackbacks and greenbacks hard to recreate (and Nolly touched on modern manufacturing codes) is you are not allowed to boil a horse to make the glue for the paper cone mix 😂. Plus the metallurgy is different. They were not devious enough to mix pot metal in with the copper to save money when it came to the coil, no lead etc etc even down to the solder. Add the fact that these speakers blow it you pump an 8 string thought it just makes it too much of a headache to manufacture speakers like the 60's and early 70's.
@Starch1b2c3d4a4 ай бұрын

@CIRCLEOFTONE4 ай бұрын
@@Starch1b2c3d4aInteresting you think lead etc is legal in RoHS 😂 is an acronym for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. BTW read what I said. I said it's too much of a headache for manufacturers because these old speakers will BLOW with 8 strings etc and 100w heads. They CAN (barring lead solder paste etc) but there isn't demand for expensive small batch speakers with horse glue that will have a MASSIVE return rate due to the paper failing.
@johnnyphoney5669Ай бұрын
First of all, thanks for the video! About different speakers in the same cab you discussed in the end. There is definitely impact. Not only the inefficient tube power amp would react differently but also in a closed back cab configuration there will be different frequencies inside the cab fighting against each other (phase cancelations). But I wouldn’t say it invalidates the test, I would expect the difference to be somewhat minor, though noticable, still, worth making a proper test how big the impact is, especially in high-gain applications. I would recommend to check out Jim Lill’s “Tested: Where Does The Tone Come From In A Speaker Cab?” where he also tests this exact case (see 10:37 timecode in that video) and actually points out as one of the noticable impact factors. Note that his tests are based on low-gain tone which in high-gain could get much more vivid.

Impedance works like this: Electrical signals flows to the lowest impedance. So all things considered, if you have two unmatched speakers, the difference in the impedance curves will signify areas where power is redistributed differently than with matched speakers. So if we have a V30 and a GB, and the V30 has a relatively higher impedance in the midrange, then more midrange energy will be distributed to the GB. This makes the V30 more scooped and the GB more middy, than if each speaker was in a matched cab. In reality I don't know how much it ends up mattering, but that's the theory anyway. It is definitely more noticeable with mismatched 8 and 16 ohm than multiple 8 ohms. it also affects low end: If you have different low end peaks (i.e, 55 hz and 85 hz), the low end peak of the cab will be kind of smeared out because each speaker offers a easier electrical flow for the other one's peak. The result should be a more efficient low end in the cab, but again the reality may be negligible.

I very much enjoyed this conversation, it answered many of my own questions and also saved me from wasting (even more) time in my own personal tone chase. The thing that fascinates me most at the moment though is impedance. I feel there's a significant difference between 8 and 16 ohm speakers, particularly the V30, which just isn't discussed enough. If we're comparing such fine tolerances I feel I have to pretty much rule out 16 ohm speakers for their fizziness and lack of mids - would you agree?
@TheOtherJohnBrowne4 ай бұрын
Glad you got something out of it. I pretty much treat 8 and 16 Ohms speakers seperately, as different models

John, you've gotta check out the Scumback BM75 (medium magnet blackback style speaker). My buddies and I who all love V30s say that Scumback is our favorite other speaker for a different, more greenback style flavor. Pairing them with V30s is gnarly!

I missed out on a pair of those on ebay just recently. My house is beginning to look like a speaker warehouse
Changing the impedance curve in an axefx does make a noticeable difference, especially if there is little negative feedback. The other data point I have is shootouts of different reactive load boxes (on youtube), which also do sound different. Whether that translates to the real world I'd be curious to see as well. :)

simple ideia for a video: boy a new V30, record it, than massage the cone with your hands (push it both ways to the limit, you'll hear some of the material giving up and stretching...) and re-record it.
