I'm probably one of the few Americans from Southern California that decided to give up the surf and sunshine for grey old Melbourne, where these guys are from. It was the late 70's, I was a tanned-blonde surfer that spent too much time in surfing communities in Australia, and took a chance on Melbourne. I fell in love with a little brunette that hated surfers and only hung out with punks. I vowed to return to Australia, which I did in 1980 and we're still married to this day. I no longer have my blonde-hair, my surfing bod nor my tan. The music of Hunters And Collectors and many art-school Melbourne groups epitomized the city at the time. The problem with the rest of the world is that it doesn't know how strange and esoteric Melbourne was in the early 80's. Unfortunately, the sunshine and the native animals and images of Sydney hide places like Melbourne - especially during this period. There was a lot of highly creative people in Melbourne in the early 80's who have gone on to have success, and this song/video is just an example of what was going on down there at the time.

Am amazed you've heard of Hunters, but more amazed that it's this song you know, how awesome. Great Aussie 'pub rock' band, they never stopped working in their earlier years, you could always find them playing a venue somewhere, any weekend. Their lyrics are always kind of obscure, you make up your own mind what they mean. Throw Your Arms Around Me, Say Goodbye, When The River Runs Dry and I guess Holy Grail (this is a later track and way overplayed here as it was used by Australian Football League as a theme song), these are all legendary songs. Thanks for the reaction, loved it. ✌❤

When I just watched this, the video makes me feel like watching some weird David Lynch movie and the sound makes me think it inspired a bit of U2 efforts around their Zooropa album. Interesting video and sound for 1982.

Hunters & Collectors are a great band, with a generally raw sound, combined with memorable melodies and hook lines .. Much of their work, including this cool song, had a kind of primitive feel, mixed with other influences ..They have a couple of iconic songs in Australia, being the unconventional sounding ballad "Throw Your Arms Around Me" and the anthemic "Holy Grail", which is often used at sporting events to get the crowd fired up. But I'd be surprised if they haven't been sued by Boston for nicking the guitar riff from "More Than A Feeling".😅.. They have a heap of excellent songs, but my fave would probably be "Do You See What I See".

@playitagainsue Not the whole song .. But the recurring guitar riff in "Holy Grail" is very, very close to the pre-chorus guitar riff in "More Than A Feeling" .. In fact, a radio station here in Melbourne was once denied permission by H&C to use "Holy Grail" as the intro music for one of their programmes, so they used "More Than A Feeling" instead.

@jessem470 I know where you're coming from Jesse, and yes there are definite similarities in the chord progressions and rhythms in those songs .. But to me, the connection is more striking for the situation with HG and MTAF .. There's far less disguising it with these ones .. But point taken.

Only album i had by H&C was their debut so i have heard this Its a challenging listen Im sure they were influenced by Bowies Station to Station I don’t know the french portion but is Talking to a Stranger same as The Cure song based on The Stranger ? I wonder if Nick Cave liked these guys ?

Hey Jesse, the Cure based the Stranger on Camus and H&C are basing the French part of the song on the Albatros by Charles Baudelaire. I am not sure if Nick likes them or not 🤩💙
