I’ve been a co-caregiver with my sister for our parents for years, our dad just passed away in June. We are so thankful that he had everything prepared for us, his will, funeral and all the documents we needed all in one place. So much easier for us to navigate these past few weeks.
@MommaOsoIrish673 ай бұрын
I'm sorry for your loss. No one can appreciate the value of a loved one being prepared, documenting everything, unless they've been through this heartbreaking event. I lost my Dad many years ago, but my Mom in June. Unfortunately despite knowing for almost three years that she was terminally ill, and several serious conversations about legalities, she made zero preparations. At least we were aware that she wanted to be cremated and laid with my Dad. But, my younger sibling has just taken over and done as he pleases regarding everything else. It's caused a whole unnecessary war and alienation at a time when we should have been there for each other. I pray for you to find comfort and healing in your time of grief.

One thing I will mention being in the medical field and working at bedside in a hospital, PLEASE discuss your wishes with whoever is making the final decision if you're sick and don't make it out of it. One of the hardest decisions for loved ones to make is to keep you alive or let you go peacefully.

The getting dressed thing makes me think of that animation meme of the two different types of face washers. One has a skincare routine and gets broken out and the other one just sprays their face with water and ends up being perfect. I feel like the most recent round is illustrating that is kids don't need those highly acidic skincare routines (adolescents and preteens are those "kids"). The water spraying person reminds me of me since I just tend to wash my face with water most days. (Except on bath days)

We don't vaccinate anymore because our son had a terrible adverse reaction to the very first time he got any at all. Vaccine induced encephalitis and other problems that related to his gut. Took him 10 months to recover. I hear a lot of, "I would rather have a child with autism than a dead child! You should vaccinate him anyway in the hospital because vaccines don't cause autism!" I don't think it's that simple but if it were the dichotomy of choices you were given, do you agree? Because you both have the resources, and each other, to take care of her and make arrangements for her. I've seen so, so many families fall apart. Marriages, finances, everything. Could you do this divorced with 70k a year? And that's average so let's assume that caregiving would not allow you to have a job that pays that. Would it even be possible? Knowing that as kids age out of "childhood" there's no real help and often as they grow older they get more aggressive and more difficult to handle. Maybe ask your dad and see what he says since he's more practical but I couldn't do it. Desire has nothing to do with it, I couldn't do it. My husband died when our son was 2 and obviously nobody plans that. Also, I think it's a little disrespectful to minimize how difficult forever parenting a severely disabled child can be, regardless of what the problem is. I'd really like to know what your dad thinks. I don't think I'm void of emotion but I also don't have the luxury of whatever it is that allows them to be so dismissive.

What if you have no money for a lawyer?
@fatheringautism3 ай бұрын
Save up money. If you smoke, stop smoking, if you pay for Netflix, cancel your subscription, if you stop at a convenience store for a snack stop doing that, anything you do extra or unnecessary that costs money, stop doing it and put that money aside. There are also options for attorneys that will take a case pro bono but you have to research it. Not being prepared for the worst only makes it hard on other family members and especially hard on the person with disabilities that you care for.
@denisemanfre95423 ай бұрын
How do you get a power of attorney if no family members wants to do that?

Here in Australia, you are assign professionals to take on that role - or an accountant for financial and a lawyer for medical. Might be an option, I'm not sure.
