📹 Lesson Details:
Today we’re going to look at the most basic of scales, the major scale and I’m going to show you how you probably don’t really know it the way you think you do!
Most bass players learn a major scale as a basic fingerboard pattern, usually in one octave. Learning scales as basic fingerboard patterns is OK but at the end of the day, you’re simply learning a physical fingering and then moving it around. You’re not really learning anything beyond that.
How many times are you actually going to play a piece of music that involves playing up and down a major scale pattern like that?
Also, if we’re only learning a major scale as a physical movement then that’s all we’re practicing. When you do that, You’re not learning all the different major scales as separate entities and most importantly you’re not learning anything about keys.

A good place to start is Mark`s Chord Tones Course. I`m working through it right now and am finding my Bass playing is getting much better, easier, and a whole lot more fun. There is no better way to stay out of a musical rut than to learn new material. Knowledge is the cryptonyte of stagnation.

Great points Mark. My key knowledge is definitely half baked. I'm ok with C, G, F, E, A and D. Not so much with Db, Gb, B. Saying the notes as I practice triads and arpeggios is super important.

Love THIS Mark. Im almost 57yrs old and wil find this challenging. I shud say that I have been playing live/studio for 30+ yrs also. I kno it sounds easy to those who kno these exercises, but it wil take sum serious work for moi! Thx for the free entry into ur course/forum. And thx for all that u do. I hope u/urs are safe/well and ur music career is earning u a good living. Even tho I can learn a lot from many teachers on You Tube, I tend to steer my "Bass Steering Wheel" towards u the most. Thx again for all you do for all of us and Happy Holidays, from dUg- in Montesano, WA/USA...

Obviously there's no one weird trick which will make it all easy, but my guess is that it's probably worth specifically working on mentally mastering runs of different lengths, in both directions, on the two whole-tone patterns ( ...-C-D-E-F#=G#-A#-C-... and ...-C#-D#-F-G-A-B-C#-... of course), starting from any note. Not of course because the whole-tone scale is very important in itself but because you can think of the major scale and most other modes as a few whole-note runs stitched together by a few semitone intervals. You can break things down even further and focus on the eight different whole-tone intervals and two different half-tone intervals that cross the E-F and B-C "creases".

I didn't do formal lessons on this subject, maybe that would have been the key (pun intended). I have spent hours attempting to learn scales and notes parrot fashion and only managed polly want a biscuit at the end of it. Not a big deal though as I'm a guitarist, and only play songs I've had a hand in writing, happy with what I can do without knowing all the theory.

They are interesting to learn. But truth is, if it sounds good it is good and that doesn't always mean sticking to exact key or scale.
