My autistic son had bone cancer/osteosarcoma 6 years ago (10 years old) . They amputated his entire left leg. He also had almost a year of intense chemo. During all of that, he kept breaking his fragile bones. He had full blown osteoporosis (probably from the amputation itself, and from the chemo) . We ramped up his Vitamin D, and his bones have been strong and haven't broken since! He is also 6 years clear of cancer!

My hand arthritis has seriously diminished since taking D3 supplements. Magnesium has rid me of restless leg syndrome. I’m also using sub-lingual B12, turmeric and now that Circadin is over-the counter, I’m finally getting full and refreshing sleep. I’m 63 and used to be physically formidable but the years and a hard lifestyle had taken their toll. I had gone to the doctor every time I felt poorly since my late 40’s but to no real effect. I know we are cautioned against self-medication but I’ve made myself aware of potential hazards and introduce these supplements one at a time and monitor results. These really have been life-changing. And yes, I’ve heard all the “ well you should do all this by applying proper dietary measures!” Some of us don’t want to spend all our available time assessing macro-nutrients, shopping and preparing this stuff. Laying off the booze and bread has a lot going for it too. So, for me it’s B12, D, and good quality sleep.

Your videos are always so informative and your sense of humor is wonderful. I'm one of those people slow to catch up with technology. You could say I came into the 21st century kicking and screaming. 😉 Sure I had a cellphone but I didn't actually get a smartphone until 2 years ago. While learning how to use the new phone, I discovered KZbin. One day I ran across your videos and started watching. I've had a scope on one knee years ago but that wasn't necessarily the reason I started watching. I've also worked in the medical field and your videos just struck my interest. Basically I was introduced to you when I discovered KZbin. Your videos were so intriguing and humorous that I ended up binge watching them. My brother just found out that he may need hip surgery and I thought of you. So I've sent him several links to your videos and told him how great you explain things in such a helpful way. I also mentioned your sense of humor and how you have reenforced the meaning of "Laughter is the best medicine". You take away a lot of fear that people have when approaching a medical problem. I commend you on your approach to explaining medical issues and I appreciate the humor you add to the videos. You're not only helpful with the information you provide but the humor makes you so relatable. Congratulations on reaching 100,000 subscribers, a recognition you well deserve! I find your videos very entertaining while providing valuable information. If I ever get to visit Canada again, I'll be sure to look you up. 😉 I'm sure you guys are a hoot in the OR. 😋 Thanks for all you do for this channel and I applaud your continued success! 🤗

I’m confused about the issue of taking Vitamin D with other vitamins to enhance absorption. I’ve heard folks taking it with a vitamin C supplement. Saw the vitamin K comment on here. I do take a multivitamin but it sounds like those just don’t cut it for some vitamins - mine only has 400 IU of vitamin D. I did get some vitamin D this morning - a beautiful sunny day in San Diego at a refreshing 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a morning walk! Love you guys! You are great at conveying enough information in a way that I start looking more closely myself at whatever topic you’re covering. But wow! Universal agreement on any health issue is a purple unicorn on the internet.

Hi Laura. Thanks for the feedback. We love Ssn Diego! So yes 400 is often not enough and vitamin D is most often taken with K2. And yes everyone is an expert on the internet without providing support for what they spout. Thanks for watching and subscribing

A few years ago I was in general not feeling well. I was in my late 50s and I was just feeling old, tired, achy and somewhat depressed. I took good care of myself and worked out but nothing seemed to help. I went to my doctor and he said My vitamin D was low. I started taking vitamin D and like magic I started feeling better. I live outside NYC and he said 70 percent of his patients test low for D for the reasons you have covered. Since then I have also changed my diet and I eat a much more nutritiously dense diet. I still take my vitamin D. Very good advice thanks for spreading the word.

Hi there Docs! I'm a new subscriber and I try to do all things possible too help my health. I've been diagnosed with alot of health issues and had to 3 more yrs. of retirement but was disabled. I was going to a very good neurologist and followed her closely on everything but have moved to another state so have to start over with another neurologist. Well getting to the Vitamin D3 I take 1,000IU when I have breakfast and again at dinner. I also take Calcium Citrate 600mg 2 times with the D3. Along with B 100mg 1 time & B12 1000 mg. I notice if I don't take my vitamins I'm very very sluggish especially cold winter months I suffer. I try to move as much & eat healthy. It's been very hard when you've got health issues. Advice to people either listening to these great Doctors or reading this. Vitamin D3 is very important. Don't put it off. Today our vitamins have cost us more but it is important to your health. Especially when you're getting older. Stay healthy & God Bless!🩺

I enjoy the medical info both you Doctors put out on the videos. Just a note to the video tech personnel about showing on the screen other videos for checking out. Try and present them a little lower on the screen so the doctor's faces don't get covered over. This video completely covered Dr. Weening's face and half of Dr. Zalzal's face at the end of video. Informative AND funny,... ya gotta like these guys. btw... thanks for talking me through my first kidney stone. I didn't know sht except that I was experiencing extreme pain. It really helped me to get things mentally under control having reviewed your video. Without that video I really felt vulnerable, but the video helped me understand it. I mean the doctor at the hospital was "right", but they are very quick and busy, so you still feel a bit like maybe it's stomache cancer and a pinched nerve in your back, maybe your just constipated, etc. etc. Lots of maybe's still floating around in my head, but as soon as I saw your video I realized... Yep, that's exactly what's happening. I still didn't believe something so painful could be work it's way out in a few days... honestly... I went back to the hospital a 2nd time the next day asking them to just yak it out it hurt so bad, but I'm so glad they gave me another pain killer and asked to give it a couple days cause the extraction isn't without risks and discomfort also, Thank goodness I listened... cause.... after a couple days there was a little pressure pulse in the hose then a little "tink" on the porcelaine. ...Never been happier,... but YES... your video really helped me mentally to get through those two days and used the pain meds more confidently.

Thanks for lots of great info! Please consider following up with more information on how vitamin K2 -- not vitamin K -- ensures that increased serum calcium levels arising from vitamin D supplementation are better handled, by directing calcium to the bones/teeth, rather than to the kidneys (kidney stones) & arteries (atherosclerosis) -- or correct me, if I'm mistaken! Assuming I'm not, I believe that vitamins D & K2 should always be supplemented together.

Speaking of Vit K in the same conversation with Vit D - it's suggested that you take Vit K2 (not K1 - which affects clotting) with Vit D as it helps get the calcium into the bones (I think versus the heart and kidney). I'm going to say something controversial, but it's working for me . . . Normal Vit D levels are between 35-100 (give or take). I take 5-10,000 IU's of Vit D (the higher dose if my allergies/sinuses start flaring) and keep my levels up on the higher end of normal. Since I've done that, my psoriasis went from 8 spots on my body to one quarter size spot behind my knee. More importantly to me, I no longer get my month-long allergy-induced bronchitis/croupy cough/asthma, sicker-than-a-dog, episodes 3-4x/year. I also take my Allegra and Singulair year round, not just when I think allergy season is coming. I do worry about toxicity, but get my levels checked regularly including calcium, as hypercalcemia can be a side effect of too much Vit D. I've been paying attention to the studies for about 12 years - and seeing the difference when people get their levels up - at least to the 40's. Very glad to see you all expanded your Vit D talk to include the other benefits in addition to bone health. I saw dtishman mentioned breast health - true that! Thank you Docs! Love your presentation style and humor! BTW - the Finnish countries do take cod liver oil for Vit D (ew).

I wouldn't want to take vitamin D and calcium together, especially at higher doses. The vitamin D increases calcium absorption on its own and can result in calcification of the arteries. I'd be taking vitamin K2 with D instead. This helps move calcium to the bones where it's needed.

One of the most important things about vit D is its relationship to the health of the gut microbiome, and therefore sleep and the production of things such as dopamine, seratonin etc see for example, and interview between Dr Stasha Gominak and Dr Amy Novotny about a year ago

Hi Docs, you should encourage people to actually get their blood tested for Vitamin D level. It is really the only way to tell whether you are getting enough, or need to cut back on the supplements. A couple of tests 3-4 months apart can show how the level is changing with supplementation.

Vitamin D3 makes glutathione by increasing the transcription of the enzymes, glutamyl-cysteine ligase (creation)- glutathione reductase (recycles glutathione). So getting vitamin D3 @ 50 ng/ml blood level plus cysteine gets glutathione to be made naturally in the body
