Transgender cyclist Emily Bridges feels comments made by Boris Johnson over whether she should race women were the catalyst for a wave of violent threats and has also revealed she wanted to compete at the Commonwealth Games this summer.
The 21-year-old Welsh athlete made headlines in March when her attempts to race at the British National Omnium Championships in the women’s category were thwarted at the 11th hour by world governing body UCI.
It sparked a debate which spread further than just the sport, with the Prime Minister weighing in when he stated: “I don’t think biological males should be competing in female sporting events” at a time when Bridges was already receiving plenty of criticism on social media and from fellow competitors.

The normal races for male, female and juniors were unaffected. Emily Bridges has been excluded from officially sanctioned womens' racing. Men and women compete separately for a reason, men are stronger and have an unfair advantage over women. There aren't enough of them to have thier own event. Despite what the msn and Labour MPs like to tell us, Trans people represent something like .7% of the population. So an entire event would probably be about 5 people total. Moreover that sort of event would be a level playing field so these cheats would have no invective to enact such a thing. I think the time has come to split competitive sport into three categories. Biological Male, Biological Female and others (that don't consider themselves to fit in to the first two categories). I think there would be genuine interest as to how those in the third category compete and produce results compared to the other two categories. I would be amazed, if such a system existed, that you didn't find the standards in the third category fell somewhere between the first and second categories. This is probably because there seems to be a disproportionate number of biological males that are wanting to transition to females and compete at a serious level (elite) rather than the other way round, all of whom cannot reach the standard required for success in their original category. That way all athletes/swimmers/sports competitors relying on their physicality for success would be catered for. I agree 100% with the sentiments of Sharron Davies and it is gobsmacking that the problem does not get sensible consideration for fear of causing "offence". How about the "offence" caused to people by the inclusion of those who identify as something other than their biological sex competing in the wrong category. (I do not consider myself to be rightwing by any stretch of the imagination, but this is purely a matter of common sense)

The problem here is that with these three categories you're losing all the categories for children. At the moment in football you'll have 'under7s', 'under8s' etc even competitive, but your three categories would put them in with adults. In tennis you'd lose mixed doubles which would be a shame because people like that. In boxing they have categories for different weights so with your three categories you'd be putting flyweights in with heavyweights so the lighter competitors couldn't play. There are also competitive sports categories for disabled athletes and with your three categories you'd put disabled athletes together with able-bodied. So I think that there would need to be more than three categories even though it's a good idea you've suggested in principle, it might be too simplistic not to cater for everyone who wants to play competitive sports.

@@vladimirimp fair enough, apart from the bit about under 7s or under 8s as this issue should not arise until adulthood kicks in and at 18 the person in question can officially transition. Mixed doubles would need to be a pairing of trans male with trans female so no problem there (apart from the fact it seems to be mainly biological males that seen to desire to Tranition and compete at a high level where their physicality is advantageous). Boxing is more complicated, but it would still be size related in their category. I suppose the numbers of likely athletes pursuing trans gender boxing will be small (so why have it at all?) but there is definitely no place for a trans female within the biological female category due to the physiological advantage they would have. Mike Tyson in his prime, if he became trans female would not have lost his physical advantage over a biological female in the same weight category as himself. Perhaps it is sadly one of the consequences of transitioning into the opposite sex that sacrificing a potential sporting career would be necessary. After all, it is a personal choice, so all the consequences need to be considered. It should not be up to sport to accommodate people that have opted away from the requirements of participation.

I thought your suggestion of having three categories for all sports 'Biological Male' for instance would be - male kids, male adults, male flyweights, male, heavyweights, male seniors - all lumped together. And hence mixed doubles I just meant your three categories would mean we couldn't have a biological male and biological female pair any more. Because it's just three categories for all competitive sport.

@@vladimirimp No. keep sport as it currently is, with a new third section that caters for anyone fitting into the trans category (disabled included if necessary). Some sports or professional games such as darts or snooker probably wouldn’t be affected as much because the physiology is probably less significant. But as a rule, if the numbers are significant enough, have a trans category to cater for anyone who classifies themselves so.

Testosterone was never the qualifier for womens sport. We didnt create a sports category because we observed that half tha population has 1/10th of the testosterone as others. This was never why we created womens leagues. The necessity comes from reproductive differences, and the effect it has on a womans body. Lower testosterone is ONE of those effects. But its not why we created womens sport. Testosterone was never the qualifier!

Look at Lauren Jeska, the British Champ that won all the ladies fell races 2010 to 2014. When it was discovered that she was a he UK Athletics asked her to provide blood tests to show her testorone levels. Men have a higher VO2 max where women cannot compete against them. There used to be a Barrs Body Test that now seems to be forgotten. Jeska decided to go to London and stabbed Ralph Knibbs (ex pro rugby) at UK athletics hq. She stabbed him in the head and neck and he is now disabled, she also injured two of his colleagues that tried to help him. She is now serving 18 years for attempted murder
