I began work in 1960 and it must have been 1970ish before I became aware that it was classed as a Benefit and there was not a pot with my name on and pennies going into it for me. Never did I ever hear a politician refer to anything other than a pension, or that a rogue government could refuse my right to a pension if it had the wish to do so. We were all misled so that when it is taken away it will not have been stolen; but morally it will !!!!

We have been forced into paying for it in taxes and National Insurance as we work, told in no uncertain terms it is going towards our state pension when we retire as a guaranteed right to an income that at the very least, would pay for the basics of life. By implication, that included necessities such as food, heating, rent or maintenance costs round the home, clothing and council tax. I'm 66 now and have just started claiming my state pension. My view of it was if people can afford to invest in a private pension as well, well that's great, but many of us (myself included) were not able to because our wage was too low but when I was working I was reassured I'd be OK in retirement because I was paying National Insurance, which I was led to believe entitled me to guaranteed income at pension age. What they now appear to be telling us is that it was all a con, a scam, to get us to pay extra tax all those years we were working and now we have arrived at pension age, there's no guarantee at all and the government could snatch it away at any time! I strongly believe that confidence-tricksters have been imprisoned for less and that is where Starmer, Reeves and the rest of the cronies deserve to be.

I think these MPs show a worrying lack of awareness. Are they even aware of the current state pension? It's not even minimum wage , some of these people are frail , disabled, don't have savings, the limit for pension credit is very low , and they spend many hours indoors , 300 pounds isn't a lot of money but it did help , many of these people will go without heating because they won't want to get into debt , I think many lives will be lost thus winter .

Agree. And an elderly frail person tends to incur higher costs to just survive than a younger, more able-bodied person. Of course, there's the need for a warmer home due to their blood circulation usually not being so good and the increased risk of strokes and heart attacks at lower temperatures etc, but also, they need more assistance with things like necessary jobs round the house and garden that they used to do themselves, such as mowing the lawn, painting and decorating, small electrical jobs, bits of plumbing and looking after the car. It gets very expensive if you can't do these things yourself.

Also, a significant amount of MP expenses is spent on large quantities of biscuits, especially Jammy Dodgers (a favourite of David Lammy's) and this is of course, a waste of tax-payer's money. If this frivolous expense was stopped, it would help trim the Foreign Secretary's waist line and reduce the £20 billion black hole. (Added Note: when I was at work, if I or any of my colleagues wanted biscuits or other treats, we had to bring them in ourselves at our own expense, as I'm sure almost everyone else had to do as well. EVERY LABOUR MP IN WESTMINSTER SHOULD BE RECALLED BY ITS CONSTITUENCY. The Recall of MPs Act 2015 is an act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that makes provision for constituents to recall their member of Parliament (MP) and trigger a by-election. It received royal assent on 26 March 2015 after being introduced on 11 September 2014. Unlike recall procedures in some other countries, the act does not allow constituents to initiate proceedings. Proceedings are initiated only if an MP is found guilty of wrongdoing fulfilling certain criteria. A petition is successful if at least one in ten voters in the constituency sign. Successful petitions result in the MP vacating the seat, triggering a by-election.

I’m a pensioner and it’s all well and good boosting the state pension, which is my only income, unfortunately the increase now exceeds the tax threshold and I am presently paying income tax. So clearly the state pension is NOT a benefit.
