In an interview, Zwai talked about how he was the 1st Black boy at the Drakensberg boys choir school and he was bullied so hard, parents pulled their children out of the school and at one point he told his dad (who was very sick and lying on his death bed) ukuthi he wanted to leave the school, but his father instructed him to stay on, and be the key that would open the door for Loyiso and other Black boys to get into that school. That is A LOT for a child to deal with. Zwai is a REVOLUTIONARY, he was in the trenches fighting and it's clear he has PTSD. He's angry that his mother never saw his wounds, she enjoyed the benefits but failed to mother him. Granted uMama and Mr Bala separated in 1982, and then he died in 1988. At which point she got married to Phelo's father but the marriage failed within a year (circa 1991). She married Tata Jafta in 2018...30 years after Zwai's father's passing. The big beef is the fact that they got married 3 months after Tata Jafta's wife passed on; the speed and secrecy are the problem! I think the marriage triggered Zwai, he feels like his mother is more bothered about her things; she failed to look after them when they were young (and I'm not talking money, I'm talking emotional support...did she know Zwai was being bullied at school, and how did she encourage him to overcome the challenges?). Also, marriage is between families, and the elders are supposed to guide the young. uMama got married quietly and without involving the family and now she wants the children to just blend and play happy families. Marriages are already a problem in the family as evidenced by the fact that 3 children are divorced. Phelo did not even invite all his siblings to his wedding. uMama is not even taking into consideration that Tat Jafta's children feel a certain way about the way their father remarried so quickly. Mam Veronica better be careful cause Tat Jafta's children may well light into her.

Mama Zwai, she needs to reflect on her life and the decisions, she made at the expense of her children. She married Phelo father and Japta without involving her children. She has three children from the same father and one child from another father. Phelo feels alienated from his siblings, while the three feel alienated from their mother. It's unfair to say that. The child is the father of the man. It sounds like Zwai's mother was kind of absent and Zwai had to fight his battles as well as look after his siblings. His mother enjoyed the benefits of his success but has never tended to his wounds, that is why they have anger issues as evidenced by the tics.
