Muruganar was a Tamil poet and scholar who authored or compiled many works on Sri Ramana Maharshi. He also persuaded him to record the teachings that are contained in Ulladu Narpadu (Forty on That-Which-Is) and Upadesa Undiyar, also known as Upadesa Saram.
His thousands of verses of devotional poetry praised Bhagavan and expressed gratitude for the spiritual liberation that his Guru's grace had revealed to him.
Extracts from his books can be read at the following links:

David, I so enjoy listening to you talking about the devotees of Bhagwan. Just a few days back I was thinking that there was really nobody I could talk to about the saints because the world is going about its business as usual; and I found you. I know my Sadguru has responded to my wish to learn from great devotees. Just listening to you talk is such a joy. I am transported to a world that is beyond this one, where only God is, in multitudes of forms of Himself. Thankyou so very much for these videos.

Too good. What a devotee! What a Guru!! and what a narrator. So complete surrender does mean complete Jnana - as Muruganar and Bhagawan show and as David narrates.

Thanks David for these wonderful talks on Sri Ramana Maharshi and his disciples. You have a nice way of telling stories. It seems like in one of your previous incarnations you were a traveling story teller in India. Please bring some more in future.

For every notable philosopher there have been followers. But few are those who properly record the events for future history to pass down ideas in great eloquence. Your work is greatly notable as well! I really enjoyed your videos.

In sum, from my view there is no better expression of Self Realization except through Ramana. I have listened to so many of the current non-dualists of our age in the West and no disparagement is meant there, but only by Ramana's Grace David conveys the beyond extraordinary Realization of Ramana to the world and specifically to me. I need nothing else! WOULD THESE VIDEOS LAST FOREVER!

Really enjoying all these stories, brings Bhagavan's time in Tiru, so beautifully to life. Perhaps Bhagavan asked Muruganar if he had written only the last 300 lines, to entirely smother any remaining embers of Muruganar's personal doership and identity for good. After that Muruganar remained entirely surrendered to Bhagavan, for the rest of his life, never took credit for any of his writings etc.

David!!!! I just Googled Guru Vachaka Kovai and 1. You have released PDF translations in English with permission of your friend Micheal you speak of which is amazing 🤩 & 2. Have now published the book yourself!!!!! I just can’t buy it yet #covid. I love this line of videos so much, because I get to learn such intimate details that are important to the journey that aren’t picked up on in reading texts. 🙏 Thank you to you and your production team!!! I really love the music! They are all so well done!!!

Thank you for the videos. I had the honor and pleasure of translating "Be As You Are" into the Chinese language, now published in Taiwan. To me personally Sri Ramana's teachings in many ways are identical to those imparted by the ancient Chan (Zen) master Hui Neng of China about 1300 years ago who taught that everything is not apart from Self Nature and, to the shock of many, all that matters is not about meditation or moksha which are dualistic, but to see Self Nature.

ShiHong 石宏 Thanks for doing that. Someone gave me a copy a few weeks ago. Is it doing well in China and Taiwan?
@rajaping
@rajaping 9 жыл бұрын
David Godman As far as I know the book is released in the traditional Chinese characters in Taiwan but Chinese readers elsewhere, except China, can access it through local distributors or ordering on line. China is a bit tricky as most readers there prefer simplified characters and approval by authorities is required to publish books locally. The book was listed as a best seller in the spiritual category in the initial weeks of release.

When Vishvanathan tried to write a verse,Bhagavan took the sheet & wrote (The Mountain Path,Jan. 1984,p 13):' "Arunachalaramana,who is dwelling upon my heart-lotus,smiled & looked fixedly (at me),and completely annihilated my soul,and (thus) poured forth (His) Grace in abundance";(singing) thus,for the people of the world to be saved,Muhavapuri Murugan (Muruganar) composed Sannidhi Murai,which is equal to Tiruvachakam.'

Gnana Prakash It's the opening of Ramana Puranam, the opening poem of Sri Ramana Sannidhi Murai. The words are by Muruganar. The details of the recording are given at the end of each film.

I agree that other accounts of Bhagavan’s spoken teachings cannot be regarded as ‘pristine’ in quite the same way as Guru Vachaka Kovai, but I think it’s worth emphasising that the purest form of the teaching was, and is, given in Silence, without verbal conceptualisations. People differ in the level and type of rigorous explanations they require to point them towards the realm beyond name and form.

You must be aware that saint Vallalar, too , had Manickkavachakar as his guru, having composed ecstatic poems in praise of Tiruvachakam. I don't know as to why in Periyapuranam mention has not been made of Manickkavachakar, no Tamil scholar having ckearly stated the reasons fir that. But definitely Manickkavachakar flourished prior to the days of Chekkizhar.

Ganesan Sankarraman As you know Manikkvachagar's dates have been vigorously debated, with some scholars putting him as early as the 2nd century CE. The arguments for an older date often ignore references to 9th century history. For example, there is a negative comment on mayavada (Tiruvachakam 4.54-5), which indicates a knowledge of the philosophy of Adi-Sankara who died in 820 CE. There is also a reference in a Sinhalese historical work that King Sena the first (833-53 CE) came to Chidambaram, converted to Saivism and had his daughter cured of an inability to speak by by 'an ascetic clothed in the robes of a priest'. This story appears in Manikkavachagar's biography. The Tirukkovaiyar (306 and 327) refer to the Pandya king Varakunan. There are two candidates for this: Varakunan the first (765 CE) and Varakunan the second (862-880 CE). The second fits nicely with the other two historical references I mentioned. As you say, his failure to make the list of Periyapuranam saints is interesting, particularly since there is good historical evidence that it was not compiled until after Manikkavachagar passed away.

All said and done, it is not clear as to why Manickkavachakar, considrered by Siddhanthins as the greatest of four, does not find a place in Periyapuranam classified as the 12th Saivaite canon. Manickkavachakar could not have been born after 8th Century by any streatch of imagination. He condemns Mayavada in the chapter " Tiruchhadakam" when he says that he had escaped from the market place called relatives and ideas like Mayavada. The concept of Mayavada, I believe, is more buddhistic than the atman theory of Sankara rejected by all the four buddhistic scholars. Definitely he must have flourishes around 8th century, but there being no account of his being a contemporary of Sambandar and Appar in Periyapuranam. Even Sundarar who belonged to a much later period has made no mention of him in his Thevaram songs. Maraimalai Adigal, a very great Tamil scholar, has fixed his period around fourth century. But Manickkavachakar, being definitely a predecessor of Chekkizhar, the hagiographer of Saivaite saints, should not have missed him, nor Nambiyandar Nambi, who retrieved Thevaram from Chidambaram during the period of king Rajaraja should have been unaware of him. Manickkavachakar alone is supposed to have exclusively followed the path of Jnana, the fourth in Siddhantha school, the earlier being Sariyai, Kirikayai and Yoga, answeing to the concepts of service, worship, meditation in the lines of Patanjali. I think, if I am correct, Patanjali is also basically a Saibate, identifying him with Adisesha being a concoction of Vaishnavites who have never encouraged meditation presupposing the extinction of individuality. But I think that there is this lack of interest in history in Indians. We can conclude that Manickkavachakar is timeless. Most of the Siddhantha Pundits fight shy of this issue.
Looks realistic #tiktok
