Talks on Sri Ramana Maharshi: Narrated by David Godman - Gurumurtam Temple

This film covers the period in the late 1890s when Sri Ramana Maharshi was living in Gurumurtam Temple, a shrine on the outskirts of Tiruvannamalai.
Apologies for the poor quality of the sound in some places. The original recordings were not done well but we have done our best to salvage them and improve them a little.

Mr. Godman, Namaste. I love the way you narrate Bhgawan's stories. Many a time it brings shivers in my spine and hair stand straight on my hands . I cant quite explain the infinite peace I feel. You have created what we call Pothi - which is a sacred book chronicling the saint's life , for example Mr. Dabholkar wrote Sai Sat Charitra in 1920's on life of great a Saint Sai Baba of Shirdi , and this book is read with devotion by millions of devotees. Your style is equally eloquent, sweet and loving , totally filled up with bhakti and jnana - you actually takes us to those times when Ramana was alive in his body. Incredible. You too are a true devotee and your life is well spent on creating such an important and humongous work . Shall we call your Pothis as as "Ramana Mahatmya" . I have no doubt path of self enquiry will reach millions upon millions and benefit them on this planet because of your untiring , lifetime's effort. It is just a start. I wonder, is there some deficiency in the English language which precludes it from succinctly delivering the intended message? I'm just curious if Bhagavan's aversion to speaking it is indicative of his opinion that the native Indian languages are more efficacious.

Scott Douglas I don't know. Papaji told me that he would go for walks with Bhagavan and chat with him in English, but if he ever asked about spiritual matters, Bhagavan would wait until a translator was available. On the basis of these conversations Papaji thought Bhagavan''s English would have been good enough to get an answer, but he always had to wait for the Tamil interpreter. Papaji learned some Tamil since he had a job in Chennai, but it wasn't quite good enough to have detailed dialogues with Bhagavan.

David Godman It's interesting. I've heard it said that it's far easier to discuss quantum physics in certain dialects than it is in English. I imagine that all languages have certain limitations, perhaps English is not particularly well suited to discussing the Absolute.
