Looking after your mate Stuart. Very commendable. Truth is, however, Southgate bungled it in every tournament, despite having the best players, the easiest of draws, and the weakest oppositions. Over eight years, no England team, no England manager will have such luck and such opportunity, probably for another 58 years. Southgate is everybody's favourite, kindly and empathetic uncle and has fine human qualities but more is required to be a winner at the very highest levels of professional sport. Making the right decisions at the right times, and a capacity for extreme ruthlessness are required - for instance, Alf Ramsey dropping Jimmy Greaves for the '66 World Cup final. We saw time after time after time that Southgate doesn't possess these attributes when the chips are down. Moreover, England played tedious safety-first football for the entirety of Southgate's reign, so he didn't provide success nor entertainment. If a happy, united squad is the criteria for success than Southgate was a success, if winning tournaments is the sole yardstick he was a complete failure, and at 7.5 million annual salary a pretty expensive one.

I was Southgate out since euro 2020 final. But Germany and The Netherlands are not easy opponents. When people like you say stuff like that, it annoys me. Before the Germany game at Euro 2020, every single person including me wrote off England. Same against The Netherlands. Those are two strong opponents. When England beat Senegal at the last world cup, Senegal at that time were the defending champions of Africa ffs.

Fantastic post: I agree with every word. Southgate was a boring manager who played boring football. He squandered easy draws and some great players because he didn’t have the skill or the guts to take advantage of them. I never ever saw him winning a trophy as England manager. But the real villains are the FA for employing him and keeping him in the job for 8 years.

@@user-lj6jp8qp7z I was thinking this as well, while Germany weren't as good as the team they had in the previous years they still had several very good players in their team at the time and it is still difficult to knock Germany out of major competitions (before England it had only been France, Italy and Spain in other tournaments). Same for the Netherlands, they weren't as good as previous dutch teams but still are a difficult team to beat. Both have eaten England alive in previous tournaments/qualifications.

Southgate gets far too much credit. With the riches of talent that the England team/squad possesses, most managers could replicate or even surpass what's been achieved. Unfortunately I see the last 8 years as a failure to make the most of what's probably the most talented squad we've had for quite some time, as well as some very average opposition sides (when you compare them to past Italian/Spanish/French squads).
@Enzoblueblood
@Enzoblueblood Ай бұрын
I believe the next manager will have more or less the same problem Southgate’s had: against top opposition England have never been able to control games by controlling the midfield because they still don’t have the right profile player able to collect the ball from defenders and progress the game through the midfield. Until they find that player it will be more of the same.
@AJB17
@AJB17 Ай бұрын
@@Enzoblueblood that is true. Maddison does that week in week out, but hasn't ever been in favour with Southgate. Maybe a stellar season with Spurs might see him get more international game time. The problem will be who does the new manager drop if that's the case? A good problem to have. I suspect Palmer and Foden have the ability to play through the lines too.
@Enzoblueblood
@Enzoblueblood Ай бұрын
@@AJB17 but those players are attacking players. I’m talking about a defensive midfielder who will sit alongside Rice. England needs a type like a Pirlo or a Busquet, Kroos or a Rodri. The closest we’ve had to any of those was Michael Carrick(and we never bloody played him). Maybe, Adam Wharton could develop into that player; time will tell, but the next manager is going to have to find a way for England to dominate or at least match up high possession teams in the midfield. Historically, if we go too attacking we get opened up on counterattacks, and if we go too defensive we get swamped. Either way we always lose. The next manager will have a challenge to find a happy medium. Good luck to him.

Southgate threw away two euros because He put loyalty ahead of talent. Good riddance. When you are playing a strong world class team like Spain, you start a strong 11 and not your favourites and be playing players out of position. This watermelon Southgate put Bellingham at LW and Foden at RW. Two CAM. When I saw that formation before the game, I knew straight away that England had 0 chances of winning that final. Watkins showed how deadly He can be in the 10 minutes He played against The Netherlands. And Southgate still started Kane ahead of Watkins in the final. When Kane started that final, it was like we were playing with 10 Men. Will never forgive Southgate for messing up both euros final with His stupid substitutions and stupid tactics in both finals.

Safegate was England's biggest problem and that was completely down to Southgate.
