18 years old and had to qualify, won 10 straight matches and didn't drop a set, in a Grand Slam tournament. Never done before and doubt it will ever be repeated. Must be considered one of the greatest achievements in sports history. Extraordinary! Oh, and a maturity, smile and personality too.

Oustanding young woman. To win as a qualifier, 10 matches, 20 straight sets, having only played 4 tournaments as a pro beforehand and ranked 150 in the world, is arguably one of the greatest sporting achievement in any professional sport, worldwide. I would say it was like a movie-script, but they usually have drama. This was just serene all the way through. This sort of thing shouldn't happen in professional sport.

I rack my brains, and there have been several stories of great sporting success - e.g. Lewis Hamilton coming within inches of winning the F1 world championship in his *first ever season*; Martina Hingis, winning slams at 16; Boris Becker winning Wimbledon - also at 16, but he was ranked 20 at the time. There just isn't anything, anywhere, to compare with this. Emma is like an actress who appeared as an extra in one film and won an Oscar for the next; a scientist who got a Nobel prize for the work she did 6 months after an undergraduate degree; a journalist who got the Pulitzer prize for her very first report after getting her first job after graduating;p a singer who released her first five singles and sold 100 million copies of each - all rolled into one. In the 2024 Australian Open, Yastremska made it from qualifying to the semi final, where she lost - but what was everyone thinking? "Can she do a Raducanu?" Well, no she couldn't, but that's the benchmark. No-one who watched those matches live will ever forget what they saw. A legend unfolding in front of their eyes.

What mr Jordan fails to point out at 1:45 is Raducanu destroyed the woman that knocked out the world #1, she destroyed the reigning Olympic champion, she destroyed the form player in woman’s tennis in Sakkari and then destroyed the woman that knocked out all them seeds in the final.

As a Canadian I am not even that upset that Leylah didn't win. After watching their earlier matches, I thought that Emma would win. She is a delightful young lady who seems to have her head screwed on right, and a good team around her. I think she will be able to handle the pressure. I sure hope so because I want to watch more of her and Leylah competing on the women's tour.

Not the same. Shelby rogers beating Ash barty was a complete fluke. First time she's ever done it. Fernandez taking Osaka is way more impressive. Then Svitolina and Sabalenka who were both playing the best tennis of their lives. Crazy. Radacanu didn't even play a seeded opponent until the quarters. Sabalenka was a two seed and had a harder draw. Her accomplishment is incredible but she still needs to prove she can win against top players consistently. Wishing her the best. People always talk about who someone else defeated. Really, a player can play only those players they meet in the draw. They don't have the option of calling the tournament director and saying, "I want to play this person or that person." It's the luck of the draw. Yes, Leylah Fernandez probably had the tougher draw. But when they met in the finals, Emma won in straight sets. This is taking nothing away from Miss Fernandez. She played fantastic tennis, won almost a million dollars, is now known around the world, and should be on her way to a fine tennis career. Looking forward to watching them both play in the future.

Raducanu did an amazing job but I take issue with how these guys characterized the NY crowd. Yes Fernandez got the most applause but that’s because she’s Canadian and we saw her beat some really tough opponents. Raducanu started getting just as much love from the crowd as the match went on, especially after they patched up her knee and she was still winning points. The NY crowd loves players who earn it and by the end Raducanu had definitely won the crowd over.
@cloverite
@cloverite 3 жыл бұрын
That’s BS. They were correct. The crowd cheered loudly anytime Emma lost a point, especially when she double faulted, there was barely a whisper when she won points, even a couple of the points that were outstanding. When she got back on the court from injury she was booed by the crowd and heckled during the serves. Even after she won the applause was not as loud as it had been when she lost points. Leylah was even given more applause when the trophy’s were handed out. American crowds are disgusting. To treat an 18 year old novice the way they did, it would be bad enough if she was an experienced player but they basically picked a side, Canada, and then bullied the British player. I was doubly pleased she won to upset the disgusting spectators, half of which walked out at the end of the came and didn’t wait for the presentation.

You must be a big boxing fan to remember Randy Turpin’s stunning upset of Sugar Ray Robinson. I believe that was 1951. I’ll give you another British boxer that scored a shocking upset over a legendary champion, John Stracey’s TKO win over Jose “Mantequilla” Napoles which occurred in 1975. Both Turpin and Stracey did not have long reigns, though. Turpin lost the middleweight crown in his first defense, a rematch with Robinson, by 10th round stoppage and Stracey lost his welterweight crown in his second defense to Carlos Palomino by 12th round stoppage.

Emma said the her biggest triumph and what helped her win the title was not paying attention to the "outside stuff" but focusing on her craft and the game plan. In other words Emma did not get caught-up in her image, her pride, her ego. She put her image aside and "died" to herself. This allowed her to tap into her spirit, rise to the challenge and discover more about what she is capable of mentally, emotionally and physically. She learned. She grew in the experience. Her performance at the U S Open is a case where she lost herself to find herself.

Leicester City's was bigger and better and nothing to do with the 5000-1 odds. It was a hugely bigger deal than Emma who actually sat in the easy part of the draw and powered thru. Much like when the England football team are in the easy part of the draw and beat teams like Jamaica, Sweden and Turkey and you'd say England are world beaters. Leicester had to play everyone to reach the title whereas cup draws Emma doesn't have to play the big hitters to reach the final.

Womens tennis is actually really a great thing. I'm not mad about female sports but ladies tennis is different. They seem miles ahead in that particular sport to most others, decades ahead in fact, maybe because the WTA has been professional status for decades. Female tennis stars are in my opinion the greatest female sports people. Look at the names down the years and this rings true. There is so much joy in watching and they tend to in the main carry themselves very well. Halep, Kvitova, Kerber, Barty etc all so different in personality and bring something unique to the table. Now add in these youngsters to the mix and it will be well worth watching.

The fact is the more she wins, the more famous she becomes. The trick is how to properly handle her fame. I’m not sure calling her beauty superficial is quite accurate. However, while it's is an amazing underdog story, women's tennis has has had an influx of new winners. This doesn't mean her achievement is any less grest, it is what elevates the achievement of Andy Murray. Sure he wasn't out of the box grand slam winner, it took him a few years. But he best 3 of the greatest tennis players of all time to do it. And had the British public's monkey on his back, with no winner for over 70 years. I think knowing the magnitude of the achievement adds more pressure and to do it anyway is almost Victoria cross levels of mental strength. Andy Murray will always be it for me.

Not always agreed what Jordan has said in the past but on this occasion he's nailed it insofar as keeping Emma insulated from all of the sharks who will be circling, she has had a good childhood with sound family values by parents who both love her and want what's best for her! She will have a great team around her so all she has to do is grow and develop her tennis and enjoy her tennis! She is only 18 going on 19, what a bright and successful future she has ahead of her! I've never been interested in tennis, I always used the analogy that I'd sooner watch paint dry! After watching one of her early matches (on recommendation I may add) I was and am hooked! I very much look forward to watching this girl grow, there will be a few ups and downs along the way but that's how you develop and improve. finally, someone who sees. Leyla is a defensive player, but there is no defense if the offence obliterates you. There is no point for the likes of sakkari / fernandez/ kerber to chase down.. because ER ended it 4 shots ago!! Hence ERs aggression simply freaked out the other players.. who she was breaking almost at will. Imho I put it down to her height, reflexes.. plus the game aggression.. but you can only do that if you believe in your own shot making. the second break point at 3-2 in second set.. leylas serve should have been an ace.. (height/ reflex), leylas next shot should have been put away (lacked aggression).. raducanu did what she does - reacted boldly and put it to bed. its moments like that that are the difference. also, notice she stopped that annoying/cute wimbledon 'dropping racket' after great shot stuff.. she is beginning to understand her own talent. the whole thing was matrix-neo-esque! a bit more muscle, add 5 kph and 5% accuracy to the serve, stamina (shes only played for a few months).. she's 18.. ER is a generational talent. its really nice to see and for my tennis playing girls to watch!

@@alanpattinson6211 no your right , I respect the others ,I'm just highlighting ,we got excited with Robson junior Wimbledon champ ,Watson looked great ,Khonta was in a very good ranking ,but they were all miles away from achieving what Emma has if we are honest , Radacanu blitzed everyone of the court

Graff's forehand is nothing like Emma's. Graff's forehand was very effective of course, but I much prefer the look of Emma's, who is far more balanced too while hitting it.
