Oustanding young woman. To win as a qualifier, 10 matches, 20 straight sets, having only played 4 tournaments as a pro beforehand and ranked 150 in the world, is arguably one of the greatest sporting achievement in any professional sport, worldwide. I rack my brains, and there have been several stories of great sporting success - e.g. Lewis Hamilton coming within inches of winning the F1 world championship in his *first ever season*; Martina Hingis, winning slams at 16; Boris Becker winning Wimbledon - also at 16, but he was ranked 20 at the time. There just isn't anything, anywhere, to compare with this. Emma is like an actress who appeared as an extra in one film and won an Oscar for the next; a scientist who got a Nobel prize for the work she did 6 months after an undergraduate degree; a journalist who got the Pulitzer prize for her very first report after getting her first job after graduating;p a singer who released her first five singles and sold 100 million copies of each - all rolled into one. In the 2024 Australian Open, Yastremska made it from qualifying to the semi final, where she lost - but what was everyone thinking? "Can she do a Raducanu?" Well, no she couldn't, but that's the benchmark. No-one who watched those matches live will ever forget what they saw. A legend unfolding in front of their eyes.

What mr Jordan fails to point out at 1:45 is Raducanu destroyed the woman that knocked out the world #1, she destroyed the reigning Olympic champion, she destroyed the form player in woman’s tennis in Sakkari and then destroyed the woman that knocked out all them seeds in the final.

Raducanu did an amazing job but I take issue with how these guys characterized the NY crowd. Yes Fernandez got the most applause but that’s because she’s Canadian and we saw her beat some really tough opponents. Raducanu started getting just as much love from the crowd as the match went on, especially after they patched up her knee and she was still winning points. The NY crowd loves players who earn it and by the end Raducanu had definitely won the crowd over.
@cloverite3 жыл бұрын
That’s BS. They were correct. The crowd cheered loudly anytime Emma lost a point, especially when she double faulted, there was barely a whisper when she won points, even a couple of the points that were outstanding. When she got back on the court from injury she was booed by the crowd and heckled during the serves. Even after she won the applause was not as loud as it had been when she lost points. Leylah was even given more applause when the trophy’s were handed out. American crowds are disgusting. To treat an 18 year old novice the way they did, it would be bad enough if she was an experienced player but they basically picked a side, Canada, and then bullied the British player. I was doubly pleased she won to upset the disgusting spectators, half of which walked out at the end of the came and didn’t wait for the presentation.

In other words Emma did not get caught-up in her image, her pride, her ego. She put her image aside and "died" to herself. This allowed her to tap into her spirit, rise to the challenge and discover more about what she is capable of mentally, emotionally and physically. She learned. She grew in the experience. It is an amazing achievement. Very Hollywood. To go from a 0 nobody to grand slam champion in 1 tournament is extraordinary. However, while it's is an amazing underdog story, women's tennis has has had an influx of new winners. This doesn't mean her achievement is any less grest, it is what elevates the achievement of Andy Murray. Sure he wasn't out of the box grand slam winner, it took him a few years. But he best 3 of the greatest tennis players of all time to do it. And had the British public's monkey on his back, with no winner for over 70 years. I think knowing the magnitude of the achievement adds more pressure and to do it anyway is almost Victoria cross levels of mental strength. Andy Murray will always be it for me.

The guy on the left is bang on. Emma's accomplishment is remarkable within the proper context. She did not play anyone who is currently a top 10 player, for what that's worth. She may have been able to beat them as well. Who knows. Emma has a very limited resume but the potential for her is very promising. The pressure on her to do it again will be enormous. She will be evaluated in the long term on how she does against the best players. Time will tell.

Not always agreed what Jordan has said in the past but on this occasion he's nailed it insofar as keeping Emma insulated from all of the sharks who will be circling, she has had a good childhood with sound family values by parents who both love her and want what's best for her! She will have a great team around her so all she has to do is grow and develop her tennis and enjoy her tennis! She is only 18 going on 19, what a bright and successful future she has ahead of her! I've never been interested in tennis, I always used the analogy that I'd sooner watch paint dry! After watching one of her early matches (on recommendation I may add) I was and am hooked! I very much look forward to watching this girl grow, there will be a few ups and downs along the way but that's how you develop and improve. She is quite possibly the UK's version of Serena Williams but with a touch more class! Enough said!

Her odds(400/1ish) seemed fair considering the Wimbledon run and the nature of women’s tennis in the last decade or so, definitely in the mix for a single great tennis achievement but realistically Leicester we’re more like 50,000/1 than 5000/1 when they won the league. it is the single greatest sporting achievement of all time and I’d be doubtful it will be bettered. . It always amazes me how the Leicester achievement is underplayed, the best analogy I heard was it’s like a greyhound winning the grand national. (Note: the following year Jim said if Spurs were to win the league it would be a better achievement. Sums up the man)

Simon Jordan is very intelligent ! He mentions it's a phenomenal achievement 'but' needs the right people around her . Yes congratulations Emma Raducanu but Simon rightly mentions Leylah Fernandez who had a much tougher draw , beating Kaia Kanepi , very experienced Estonian , beating Naomi Osaka , former World no.1 and US Open and Australian Open Champion , beating Elina Svitolina , top 4 player , Angelique Kerber former World no.1 , 3 x Grand Slam winner and Aryna Sabalenka , no.2 seed . I enjoyed her matches more I'm sorry to say . In fact they both Canadian born , one has Filipino mother , the other Chinese .One has Romanian father the other Ecuador . Just like 2019 winner Bianca Andreescu , Canadian but Romanian father . Just to add , may be justified or unjustified but is Women's tennis to say weak or strong outside the top 20 particularly if an unknown 18 year old (albeit talented) come from nowhere and win a Grand Slam without even losing a set ? finally, someone who sees. Leyla is a defensive player, but there is no defense if the offence obliterates you. There is no point for the likes of sakkari / fernandez/ kerber to chase down.. because ER ended it 4 shots ago!! Hence ERs aggression simply freaked out the other players.. who she was breaking almost at will. Imho I put it down to her height, reflexes.. plus the game aggression.. but you can only do that if you believe in your own shot making. the second break point at 3-2 in second set.. leylas serve should have been an ace.. (height/ reflex), leylas next shot should have been put away (lacked aggression).. raducanu did what she does - reacted boldly and put it to bed. its moments like that that are the difference. also, notice she stopped that annoying/cute wimbledon 'dropping racket' after great shot stuff.. she is beginning to understand her own talent. the whole thing was matrix-neo-esque! a bit more muscle, add 5 kph and 5% accuracy to the serve, stamina (shes only played for a few months).. she's 18.. ER is a generational talent. its really nice to see and for my tennis playing girls to watch!
