Just a note to thank you Liz for the time and obvious effort you've put into making these videos. We have just returned from our first (most certainly not our last visit) and your videos, my dreadful pronunciation, and willingness to engage the local folks made our vacation. The 30 day challenge, numbers and survival Portuguese all added to our enjoyment of a brilliant country! Thanks again

Portuguese, much like English, offers great freedom in the choice of accent. If someone wants to learn this language, they can choose to focus on European Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, or African Portuguese, reflecting the diversity of the Lusophone world. This freedom is similar to what we find in English: it’s possible to learn a British, American, African, Australian, or even Indian accent. Today, thanks to the internet, everyone has access to this rich variety of pronunciations, making language learning even more exciting and personalized. French doesn’t offer as much variety - does that perhaps feel frustrating for you?

Thanks for the video. I question the approach of memorising phrases though. Not sure how they help when you can't keep the conversation going. You get this a lot with tourists, they open the conversation, sounding super proficient in Portuguese but when you reply to them, all you see in a blank look on their faces.

Unlike French and Spanish, often perceived as deeply rooted in their lands of origin, Portuguese, especially in its Brazilian variant, shines far beyond its borders. Brazil, with its rich history of cultural blending and vibrant dynamism, offers a more open and inclusive vision of the language. The influence of its Afro-descendant population has deeply enriched this culture, giving it a unique identity. Lusophone Africans find a powerful resonance in this Brazilian Portuguese, which mirrors a shared multicultural experience. Portuguese has thus transcended its European roots, becoming the quintessential language of the Global South, standing apart from other European languages still tethered to their metropolises. Brazil, by integrating diverse heritages (African, Indigenous, European, Japanese), has transformed Portuguese into a living symbol of diversity. Today, Portuguese has become the most spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere, and the third most spoken European language in the world, positioning Brazil as the vibrant heart of a thriving lusophone world.
