I watch him play and find it so hard to believe that any one could say anything negative. The dedication this man made, the hours, months, and years he put in behind a kit.The people he has played with in his lifetime. I For one feel very blessed to be able to experience and to see pure greatness. This man takes drumming to a place that most of us will never ever see in are life time. CALL IT WHAT YOU WILL,I'LL CALL IT GREATNESS.!!!

Just close your eyes and listen to the sound he pulls out of those drums.Them toms are wide open, and tuned to perfection. The snares and kicks unreal. The whole kit just blends perfectly. MASTER TUNNING, THE MAN IS A WIZARD!!!

Yea honestly I mean I'm watching just to see how versatile he is, and how orchestral he is (actually utilizing his whole kit) but beyond just that, this solo is a perfect example of his ability to have mistake and/or flaws and he just works with it. Like dropping two sticks back to back and not just stuttering, or needing to tune the snare and keeping a melody with his feet so there's not just silence. If one was just listening you wouldn't even know!

One of my all time favorite drummers. The first time I was introduced to his drumming was the instrumental "Space Boogie" by Jeff Beck. FANTASTIC drumming in that song. I then watched Jeff Beck's 1983 performance at the ARMS charity concert. Simon Phillips was on drums. I was hooked from then on.

ScumOfCaligula Another thing i find cool is that he uses no Powerstroke kick heads.. It's all Emperors with a nice towel rolled up against the head..That's another thing that makes his sound all his own.. Haven't used Tama in years, but i was thinking of picking up a set one day.. I myself saw a Tama Starclassic performer kick and floor used for sale for the cheap price of $450 Cdn, at my local shop of used musical instruments.. I was thinking of picking them up but there is no rack tom, and to find one in the cherry fade on ebay will be extremely hard, let alone finding one in my home town....(i'm in Canada) ..Whatever.. One day i'll pick up a set, whether that be a new model, or vintage..

I’m not sure if it’s how Simon has these drums mic’d or just tuned, but that drum set sounds amazing. He truly is a virtuoso on a drum kit.

Probably because it was broken or cracked.

It's the Monarch kit Simon calls it. I think it's a custom Starclassic perhaps? Edit: It is a custom Starclassic kit made of both bubinga and maple.
