The closer you get to the Mexican/Guatemalan border the more Indigenous the population is, the people, cultures, language is similar just a man made border separates them. Mayans tend to use banana leaves while Aztecs tend to use corn husks.

Agree, specially when they have the pork in the middle, and also a cubito de tocino! The video does not compare the right type of tamales. Tusa tamales are very different from green leave tamales, the mexican tamal that they showed could best be compared to maybe a chuchito or a tamal torteado (green leave tho)... Maybe be you could do it by occasion, eg. Christmas, or sweet tamles, or everyday tamales

@@cindyceleste8457 yes and no. Guatemala as all Central America (except Belize and Panama) were part of the Captaincy of Guatemala, which was under the rule of the viceroyalty of New Spain (modern Mexico). The only Mexican territory under the jurisdiction of the Captaincy was the state of Chiapas. The rest of southern Mexico was under the jurisdiction of other administrative divisions. Now, the use of banana leaves for tamales has nothing to do with government but with cultural influence, geography and availability. Banana plantations are easily found all over Southern Mexico. From Veracruz to the Yucatán Peninsula, from Colima all the way down to Chiapas through the Pacific coast. More than a third of the country cooks tamales this way, regardless of what sincere but ill-informed Mexican Americans express in social media. Unfortunately, most Mexicans who migrate to the US come from poor communities of north and central Mexico were small corn tamales are the staple (corn is more forgiving in arid weather). In the south due to our subtropical climate we produce both (corn and banana) in large quantities. However, tamales wrapped around banana leaves are king during holidays. These are more scrumptious and refine to the palate.

I dated a Salvi girl & a Guatemalan & their moms cooked some bomb tamales but ive also tried it at restaurants & street vendors & they were hit or miss. Same with the Mexicans ive had some amazing mouth watering tamales but ibe also had some that were meh. But over all its Mexican for me not only are the best tamales I've ever had Mexicans but ive also had more variations of Mexican tamales. Also Mexico actually has certain regions that make their tamales in banana leaves in Oaxaca thsts how they make them & theyre pretty good too although not as commonly sold here in the states.
