LOL. I just popped into the comments to warn you about that. I might also suggest that you use the leftover green smoothie either as a mix-in with some greek yogurt or as a topping to your oatmeal. Just more bang for the buck. And I'm so hungry for your chili now. That might just be dinner tonight!

I eat 2 eggs every morning with some fruit and a small piece of bread for fuel and a cup of coffee. I am on my feet and on the go all day. That breakfast gets me through to lunch. My lunch is either a salad with leafy greens and tomatoes with chicken or soup, apple and PB crackers. For dinner it varies but it's either fish, beef or chicken , with either a veggie or potato, but never together. I have 2 alcoholic drinks a week and I do need something sweet after lunch and dinner. I exercise 4 days a week with weights. I have used a plant based powder vitamin for years that I put in a shake post workout with Collagen, dried beetroot and Glucosamine Chondroitin . I am 54 years old, 125 lds and in the best shape in my life. I was 215 over 30 years ago and it was a slow journey to get to where I am now.

I had a similar experience by adding steel -cut oatmeal to my diet. I was frustrated with cooking oatmeal on the stove so now I cook mine overnight in a TINY crockpot which I got for around $10 at Walmart. I use 1 cup of steel cut oats and 4 cups of liquid (sometimes cranberry juice), chopped apple or any fruit, walnuts and just before bed, I turn the crockpot on Low. No more boiling over on the stove! And When I get up in the morning it’s ready to eat!

I hated cooking oatmeal too. I figured out how to make oatmeal in the microwave, I found the instructions on the oatmeal package just didn’t work well. I use rolled oats, but I suspect it would be similar for steel cut oats. I saw a KZbin video on how to use the microwave successfully. The key is add more water, reduce the temperature, and really increase the time. You need a bowl with high sides, 2 1/2 to 3 inches. If you’re going to try this, put a paper plate under your bowl just in case it boils over, you’ll have a few failures before you find the sweet spot in your microwave. Here’s what works for me, just slightly under 1 1/4 cup water, add some flaxseed meal and some chia seeds, about a healthy teaspoon each, add 1/3 cup rolled oats, microwave 14 minutes at power level 3. It will be really hot so let it sit a couple minutes. Now you can add your favorite toppings, I usually top mine with some blueberries, strawberries, cinnamon, ginger, and walnuts, and it’s ready to eat. I do this most mornings.

Nonsense - check out Dr. John McDougall's "It's the Food" - oatmeal is mostly fiber - you CANNOT GET FAT ON IT. PERIOD. It's all the other stuff you eat, fatty meats, cheeses, butter, milk, bad seed oils, white bread, white rice sugary deserts made with bad oils - these things put weight on people. Beans, rice, quinoa, oatmeal, lentils - all these vegan foods you can eat till you're full, and you will never gain weight. Unless you add gobs of butter or oils, then that is a different story.

You have just convinced me to get on the oatmeal train, Tamara. The lunch, smoothie and chili ideas are great, especially because they are quick and easy. So often, “healthy” recipes will get into complex ingredients, massive amounts of produce and prep, that I know I won’t even bother. I can cook, I just don’t like to get into a big production everyday. Thank you! Please share more achievable recipes! I am far from my ideal weight and these simple tips inspire me.😊 UPDATE - about 2 months later - breakfast has been consisting of oatmeal with a spoonful of ground flax seed, tsp of turmeric, pinch of black pepper, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, sprinkling of walnuts, 1/4 c of blueberries and 1/3 of a banana with a spoonful of grass fed yogurt for breakfast. I haven’t lost any weight, but it is very satisfying.

I can attest to everything you're saying! After years of unsuccessful attempts at shedding the perimenopausal weight, I decided to change my diet to only whole foods. I also eliminated all wheat, use very little sugar, started eating probiotic food everyday, and I have built up to intermittent fasting. It's only been a month, but the excitement of getting on the scale every morning and seeing a lower number keeps me motivated. To my disbelief, I've already lost 6lbs, without any exercise! Thanks for the video. I aspire to look as great as you at 64!

@@sanjam11 I eat only whole foods, nothing processed. Breakfast is overnight oats in almond milk. Lunch is a plate with variety - usually cheese, cashews, olives, sliced cucumber and/or bell peppers, a banana and coconut milk yogurt. And for dinners I usually eat some sort of bean salad, such as chickpea, loaded up with veggies. Fills me up good. I do not snack anymore (used to eat every 2 hrs) and I think that has had the biggest impact. I lost 2 lbs per week and now its slowed to about 1lb/week, but I am almost at my target goal. Yes it can prevent stroke to keep blood pressure down and fix insulin resistance. Check a fasting insulin and A1c test.once I cut out processed food and salt bp came down. Any salt is corrosive to the blood vessels and can cause hemorogic stroke. Asians get the most due the high salt in their diet. Americans get most ischemic strokes. Avoid seed oils, it causes insulin resistance and fatty liver. I don't even eat olive oil any more because it's to concentrated without the olive. But plenty of other good fats.

Thanks so much for sharing about oats and cholesterol! Another great way to get oats into your day is to make them savory. Cook your steel cut oats with half water/half broth (I use homemade chicken stock, but any broth is great). I have them with poached eggs, some chopped kale, plain yogurt, generously drizzled with olive oil and topped with a little salt, za'atar, aleppo pepper and chopped scallions. They can be topped with stew, or roasted veg.

Thanks for the tip...sounds delicious and I am going to try this. I'm not too keen on sweets, esp at breakfast time. I will often make a savory stir fry for breakfast using diced celery, carrots, peppers, onion, and some leafy kale or mizuna, spinach, or mustard all stir fried w/ EVOO and plated with a dollop of refried beans. If I'm extra hungry, I will add diced chicken-sausage or eat with a half flour tortilla. I'll cook the savory oats -- I'll probably enjoy this 'twist' to oats.

Oatmeal is one of the heaviest spray grains out there. Always get organic. It also spikes insulin.
@elisebrown5157
@elisebrown5157 6 ай бұрын
Cooking it and then letting it cool before reheating and eating supposedly creates more resistant starch, which doesn't spike insulin as much. However, individual results vary according to studies I've seen. Also, there's a brand of sprouted rolled oats you can by by "Farmers We Know." It's available at Costco and specialty markets. This makes the nutrients more bioavailable and limits inflammation grains can cause in some people. It's organic as well, so glyphosate free.

A video on normal eating habits that were like my grandparents. I am 68 and gained 30 pounds over a course of 20 years. Had never been overweight. Have tried Ketovore, Ketogenic and Carnivore. They did take of the weight but I found that just dropping packaged, man made, seed oils, flour and white sugar also took the weight off. Making your food from whole foods, at home and eating only up to three meals a day is in my opinion much better for you. We eat to much now.

I also added oats and saw my total cholesterol drop significantly. I prefer the taste and texture of the quick oats but make the steel cut (both organic) in the InstantPot; 1 cup steel cut oats, 4.25 cups water, a dash of salt and a tiny scrape from a vanilla bean or extract. Three minutes on high pressure and then natural release for at least 18 minutes (still a bit chewy so you may like to cook it another minute if you prefer it softer). It looks watery but will thicken up as it sits. I put it in the fridge and it’s enough for 2 of us for a few days. I’ve been able to lose and keep off 45 #’s for over three years with oats for breakfast and my main meal mid-day and just a snack in the evening. Never thought I could do intermittent fasting but it became easy over just a couple of months. I’m in my early 60’s, post menopausal and a 7 year breast cancer survivor. Love your channel!

Thanks for sharing your recipe and tips! Have you seen Greger talk about adding spices or herbs to any meal to tremendously increase your antioxidants? I just saw it in a video and started adding Marjoram to most savory dishes. If you wanted, you could add a Pumpkin Spice mix (cinnamon, clove, ginger, etc) to your oatmeal and punch up the antioxidants. Apparently cinnamon helps even out blood glucose too.

I just added oatmeal last month after reading all about its benefits. It took an hour to get down a serving, so that night, I looked for recipes. Since then, I have 150 calories of the same oatmeal cake every day. 1 and 1/4 cups of oats in the blender and make into powder pour into bowl. 1 cored apple (skin included) chopped up and placed into blender with a squirt of lemon juice. Blend until apple sauce. Add to oat flour. Whisk one egg and add to mixture. Now the stir ins: 1/2 banana thinly sliced and diced, 1 teaspoon of dried berries chopped up even finer (I’ve used raisins and cranberries) and about 7 almonds or the equivalent nut chopped up. The raisins and nuts add texture without overwhelming and depending on calorie constrains you can certainly use more. I add 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice, but just cinnamon is also good, spray 4 cupcake pan openings or an any 2 cup pan with cooking spray and bake at 375 for 25-30 minutes. The finished product is very much like a banana nut bread from Germany. I slice mine up into 1/3 inch bits and toast them before spraying with butter spray. I actually cannot start my day without it now!

I am 68, weight 105 lb, on a 90% carnivore diet and few vegetables. Cholesterol LDL does not worries me since my other lipids are in perfect range and my tested arteries are as clean as a whistle. Oats will not work for everybody, especially if you pare it with fruits. Oats of any kind are pure carbohydrates. If you eat them eat with proteins and fats (healthy), the absorption will be slower and the sugar spike not too high. This is my experience and we are all different. Each one of us needs to do their own testing to choose which meals make more sense to them, not the entire population. Besides a couple of things your advice is on point, but always speak of your own experience when informing the public.

Yes, so true for me, I love oats but they throw my blood sugars so have to eat steel cut oats so slower digested, with a scoop of protein powder mixed into my soy milk (I drink cow milk as well but I mix it up), and add chopped nuts to the last bit of cooking to soften and swell them less gut issues that way, add chopped dried date for extra fibre and a bit of cream for more fat. I don't need to eat for about five hours after. A bowl of oats with honey and banana got me collapsed from the sugar effect and after the blood sugar drop was an anxiety attack. Never again.

I can’t wait to make that chili recipe with the veggies, Tamara…and although I’m not often a morning eater …your oatmeal with apples, walnuts and maple syrup is soooo tempting! You must be loving your new kitchen,! Love and hugs, Nanny❤️

I have a negative reaction to oats. I substitute brown & jasmine rice. And doctor it up either sweet or savory. As an example for the sweet: add banana, pat of butter, tablespoon of peanut butter. For the savory: i mostly add seasoning, sauteed veggies, broth etc...

Oh how I love your food videos! You were the one who got me eating broccoli sprouts and I share your love of foods that nourish the body well. I'm going to have to get back to eating my oatmeal though. Lately I've been enjoying cottage cheese/plain greek yogurt with blueberries, walnuts, and hemp seeds. It full of protein and so good and filling. Thank you for the great meal ideas Tamara! Your kitchen is beautiful. (Oh and thank you also for the Prequel recommendations -- I got the Gleanser, the vitamin C serum, and the barrier cream. I am loving them all!)

Please keep in mind people have health issues, we don’t know what they’ve gone through in life or anything but what they show us. Everyone who strives to improve their diet is laudable and in no way should be compared to anyone else. Our journeys are as unique and individual as the stars in the sky.

My vitamix is over 20 years old and going strong. 😊 I'm so thankful for it. I recently started eating whole oat groats for breakfast. I get the next day's oat groats soaking while preparing the current day's. I do 1/4c groats and 2c water ... even after soaking first for 24 hours, I still have to simmer it for about 2 hours. I add 1 medjool date, 4 prunes, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, and fennel, along with a small spoon of ghee. After it's cooked, I add 1T freshly ground flax, 1oz walnuts, and 1/4c berries. This has recently replaced my usual lentil porridge, so I'm trying to get lentils in for another meal each day.

Great ideas. We have green smoothies each day that are very similar to yours. However, we use milk kefir as the base and so we get millions of probiotics this way as well.

Thanks for sharing, Tamara! I always enjoy your food and cooking videos, and it's so fun to see you whipping up meals in your beautiful new kitchen! It is also a treat to see you with your hair down again too! I have missed seeing you with your adorable bob framing your pretty face. While you certainly look gorgeous with your hair pulled back, your bob is just so charming - and I think of it as your 'signature' style.

Thank you Adrian! It took a while for me to find a stylist here that I like. I toyed with the idea of longer hair and had one haircut with a bunch of layers that I I really didn't like...thus the hair up for months on end which got VERY monotonous. Luckily found someone who gave me the best cut ever! It's SO easy! I do feel more me in my new bob...although no doubt as we get into the summer I will wear it up again.

Wonderful to find your video today, Tamara. Excellent advice. I find oats especially helpful too. I add turmeric, a sprinkle of black pepper to assist absorption and ground cinnamon to help control blood glucose. Thank you for your recipes too! Greetings from Sydney.🙂💐

It’s possible for two people who are reasonably matched to eat the same food but only one lose the weight expected. How our bodies metabolise food, our age and the medication we take react differently to food types and quantities. Finding the right diet for your body is a jungle that can eat you up with feelings of guilt and failure. If I ate what you eat in a day I most definitely would gain weight. At last what you eat and your weight are in harmony with one another and that’s great. I look forward to the day when I can have a slice of that. Glad it’s all going well for you.

I would recommend to blend everything at only add the protein powder at the end, so it doesn’t get “denatured”. Not sure if I read that from Dr. Mark Hyman but maybe. That smoothie is so healthy! All the rest as well. Thank you.

My husband and I changed our eating style in January 2021. We both have lost quite a bit of weight and our health numbers have improved quite a bit as well. We don’t follow a certain diet but we do prioritize lean meats, veggies, fruit, and healthy fiber. We do eat steel cut oats some mornings. We trade off between that and a yogurt bowl every other day. I cook the oatmeal in the evening when I am making dinner. Then I put it into bowls for the next morning for us. Love this video. Thank you for sharing. ❤

Thru out my day I incorporate either a tablespoon of sauerkraut that I buy at whole foods,it's fermented in sea salt not vinegar. I also buy pickles that are in sea salt not vinegar. Both of these are probiotics.I buy organic full fat yougurt (here in Vermont we buy grassfed or A2 ).I periodically buy RAW unpasteurized milk to use in pasture raised scramble eggs.Im 60 yrs old feel like I'm 45.

Thanks for such an informative video. Oatmeal is such a great and delicious food. I add to my cooked oatmeal: sliced banana, a little honey and a spoonful of peanut butter. I use quick oats which take 2 mins in the microwave

I have savory oats almost every morning. I use homemade chicken vegetable stock instead of water for cooking and sometimes have a fried egg on top. Lots of protein in that from the stock and the egg.
